The flat mat is the biggest lie in sim golf.
You’re standing in your garage. The screen shows a 475-yard par 4 with a fairway that slopes hard left to right. The virtual ball is sitting below your feet on a 5% sidehill lie. The wind is pushing from the left.
And you’re standing on a completely flat piece of synthetic turf.
Every simulator on the market does this. The software shows you one thing. The ground tells you another. And your brain has to reconcile the two — try to imagine what a 5% sidehill lie feels like while your feet are perfectly level. It’s the same disconnect as watching a 4K nature documentary while sitting on a stationary bike. The visuals are right. The physical feedback is wrong. The Problem With Flat Mats

The engineering is absurdly overbuilt for what it does. The Swing Stage uses lightweight aircraft alloys and a precision control system developed at the Advanced Manufacturing Research Center in Sheffield, England — the same facility that works on projects for Rolls-Royce, Boeing, and McLaren. Zen holds ISO 9001 certification. The thing is built to withstand commercial use with up to two people moving on it at once.
The Zen Ecosystem
The Swing Stage is one piece of a larger active terrain ecosystem. Zen also makes:
Zen Green Stage — a putting surface that can create compound and double-breaking putts across a 12-foot or 16-foot platform. Up to 9.5% gradient. Over seven billion putt combinations. Used by the PGA of America, PING, Scotty Cameron, and the World #1’s putting coach.
Zen Golf Stage — a combined full-swing and putting surface in a single footprint. Full swing on one side, putting on the other. One room, two use cases.
Zen Eye — a ball tracking and projection system designed specifically for the Green Stage’s non-planar movement. Launches in late 2026. It’s the first putting projection system that works on a surface that isn’t flat.
The company has customers in 27 countries. The PGAs of America, GB & Ireland, Australia, and Germany all use Zen. Tour pros use it. Major universities use it. And now, through the TrackMan integration, it’s available to anyone building a TrackMan iO simulator.
Who Is This For?
The honest answer is: not many people.
A Swing Stage 2.0 costs around $20,000 installed. You need a TrackMan iO or TrackMan 4 — that’s another $10,000 to $20,000 depending on the configuration. You need a room big enough for a 6x8 foot platform plus all the standard simulator space requirements. You’re looking at a $50,000+ build before you even get to the screen, projector, computer, and furniture. This is a commercial product that happens to be available to private buyers. Zen’s own website directs inquiries to a sales team. They don’t list prices openly for a reason.
But the technology itself matters beyond the price tag. The real question is “what happens when this technology gets cheap?”
Where Active Terrain Is Headed
The moving floor market is tiny right now. Zen is essentially the only player with a commercial product. But the trajectory is predictable:
Phase 1 (2024-2026): Premium commercial only. Zen + TrackMan. Coaching studios, high-end facilities, Tour pros. Price: $20K+ for the floor alone.
Phase 2 (2027-2029): Mid-range commercial. Simpler actuators, smaller platforms, integration with mid-tier launch monitors. Price: $5K-$10K. Shows up in Five Iron Golf and X-Golf locations.
Phase 3 (2030+): Consumer-grade. Camera-based systems that don’t need a TrackMan. Smaller platforms that fit in a standard garage. DIY kits. Price: $1K-$3K.
The technology to make this happen is already here. The cost reduction is about volume — more units sold means cheaper actuators, cheaper control systems, cheaper everything. The other thing to watch is the software side. Right now, the active terrain integration is exclusive to TrackMan Virtual Golf 3. That’s a deliberate commercial decision — TrackMan wants this as a differentiator for its premium ecosystem. But Zen’s Green Stage already works with multiple launch monitor brands. The Swing Stage integration will eventually open up.
What This Means For Home Sim Owners
If you’re building a sim today, you don’t need active terrain. It’s too expensive, too niche, and too locked into the TrackMan ecosystem. The industry is heading toward a world where the line between virtual golf and real golf continues to blur. Active terrain is the next step in that direction. It’s coming — just not this year for most of us.
