Camera Launch Monitor Desert: Sub-$2,000 Has Only One Camera Option

Quick Context: If your home simulator room is under 16 feet deep, a camera-based launch monitor will give you better indoor accuracy than radar — especially on spin data. But the sub-$2,000 camera market is essentially a desert. Square Golf’s Omni ($1,599) is the only true camera-based option under $2,000. Everything else — Garmin R10, Rapsodo MLM2Pro, FlightScope Mevo Gen 2, Blue Tees Rainmaker — is radar. The gap exists because high-speed cameras are expensive to manufacture, Foresight has locked up the mid-range camera tier, and radar is simply cheaper to build. That’s changing, but slowly.


Let me describe a typical home sim buyer.

They have a garage, a basement, or a spare bedroom. The room is roughly 12 feet wide, 14 feet deep, 9 feet tall. They’ve done the research. They know they want a launch monitor that works indoors, measures spin directly, and doesn’t need 8 feet of ball flight to produce accurate data. They know that means camera-based.

They pull up the options. And they find exactly one product that fits the bill: Square Golf Omni at $1,599.

That’s it. That’s the entire camera-based launch monitor market under $2,000. One product. From a Korean company most American golfers had never heard of until a year ago.

Meanwhile, the radar side of the aisle has the Garmin R10 ($599), Rapsodo MLM2Pro ($700), Voice Caddie SC4 Pro ($549), Blue Tees Rainmaker ($599), Swing Caddie SC300i ($399), PRGR ($279), and FlightScope Mevo Gen 2 ($1,299). Something is weird here.

Why This Gap Exists

The obvious answer is “cameras are expensive.” And that’s true — up to a point. A high-speed camera module that can capture 4,000+ frames per second costs more than a Doppler radar chip. The bill of materials for a radar unit is maybe $150-200 at scale. A three-camera photometric system like the Bushnell Launch Pro starts closer to $400-500 in BOM.

But that doesn’t fully explain the gap. The Garmin R10 retails for $599 with healthy margins. If you can build a three-camera system for $500 in BOM and sell it for $1,200, that’s still a profitable product. So why doesn’t it exist?

Three reasons.

Reason 1: Foresight Sports Owns the Mid-Range Camera Tier

Foresight Sports controls the Bushnell, SkyTrak, and GC brands. Between them, they cover every price point from $1,495 (SkyTrak+ closeout) to $15,999 (GCQuad). Every single one is camera-based. If you want a camera launch monitor from a brand with a US presence and proven reliability, you’re buying from Foresight. Period. The only way under $2,000 was the SkyTrak+ at $1,495 (discontinued) or the Bushnell Launch Pro Indoor at $1,499 (requires a $199+/yr subscription).

Foresight has spent a decade building the expectation that camera-based accuracy costs $1,500+. New entrants like Square can exist at $1,599 because Square is a Korean company selling direct, with no US distribution overhead, no PGA Tour marketing budget, and no legacy pricing to protect. But one Korean disruptor doesn’t make a market.

Reason 2: Radar Is the Easy Path

Launch monitor startups face a choice. Camera requires precision optics, controlled lighting, complex calibration, and a supply chain for high-speed sensors. Radar requires a chip, an antenna, and an algorithm. Every hardware startup with $2 million in seed funding builds a radar unit. It’s faster, cheaper, and good enough for 80% of use cases.

The result is a market flooded with $300-700 radar devices that all measure the same 12-14 metrics with similar accuracy profiles. They compete on price, app quality, and battery life — not on the fundamental technology.

Reason 3: The Indoor Camera Buyer Is Underserved and Quiet

Most launch monitor buyers don’t build indoor sims. They buy launch monitors for the driving range. The outdoor range is the volume market. And outdoors, radar works great. The Garmin R10 was designed primarily for range use; the indoor sim mode is an add-on.

The buyer who specifically needs a camera-based unit for indoor use is a smaller market. They’re building a sim in a garage or basement, and they’ve figured out that radar won’t work in their space. But they’re also the buyer most likely to do the research, which means they discover the gap early and either buy a Square, stretch to a Bushnell Launch Pro, or overpay for a GC3 they don’t need.

This is the textbook definition of an underserved niche: a small but high-intent audience with limited options and a demonstrated willingness to spend.

What This Means for Buyers

If you’re building a home sim and your room is under 16 feet deep, your options are:

  1. Square Golf Omni ($1,599) — The only true sub-$2,000 camera option. Four cameras, direct spin measurement, GSPro compatible, no subscription. The trade-off: you’re buying from a Korean startup with limited US support, no long-term reliability data, and a native app that’s basic. First units started shipping weeks ago.

  2. Bushnell Launch Pro Indoor ($1,499 + $199/yr) — Camera-based, proven GC3 hardware, US-based support. But the subscription model makes it $2,494 over three years. And you’re paying for features you may not need.

  3. SkyTrak+ closeout ($1,495) — Camera-radar hybrid, no subscription for basic use. But it’s discontinued. Stock is drying up. Support ends eventually.

  4. Go radar anyway — Accept the indoor accuracy compromise. The FlightScope Mevo Gen 2 ($1,299) has fusion tracking that helps. The Garmin R10 ($599) works if you use Titleist RCT balls. But you’re accepting estimated spin data in a room that can’t support radar’s flight requirements.

  5. Spend more — Jump to the GC3 ($7,000) or the Uneekor Eye Mini Lite ($2,799). Both are excellent camera systems. Both cost significantly more than the market gap should allow.

None of these are great options. Option 1 is the best value but carries risk. Option 2 is safe but expensive over time. Options 4 and 5 are compromises in opposite directions.

What Comes Next

The camera desert won’t last forever. Three trends are converging:

Square’s success will prove the market. If Square sells enough Omni units to demonstrate demand, other manufacturers will follow. The key question is whether Square can maintain quality and support at scale. If the Omni gets a reputation for reliability, it becomes the template. If early units have issues, it sets the category back.

Rapsodo’s overhead unit will enter at a disruptive price. The CLM Pro is expected to launch later this year. If Rapsodo hits a sub-$2,000 price point on an overhead camera system, it changes the conversation. Overhead is the best format for permanent sim installations, and a $2,000 overhead unit would reshape the market.

Chinese OEMs will eventually figure out cameras. The $89-149 BOM radar units flooding Amazon under random brand names prove the Shenzhen supply chain can manufacture launch monitors at scale. It’s only a matter of time before someone puts together a $299 camera module with acceptable accuracy. The question is whether the accuracy will be good enough, or whether we’ll get another OptiShot 2 situation — a camera-based device that technically works but produces unreliable data.

My bet: within 18 months, there will be at least three camera-based options under $2,000. Square will have competition. And the buyer who today faces a choice between one risky option and four suboptimal ones will actually have a real decision to make.

In the meantime, the market gap is real, and the industry knows it. If you’re building a sim today and your room can’t handle radar, buy the Square Omni, cross your fingers, and keep the receipt. It’s the only table with a chair pulled up.
