The Approach S70 is the flagship. It has a 1.4-inch AMOLED display, Garmin’s full golf feature set (Green View, PlaysLike Distance, PinPointer, Wind Speed), and it connects to the Garmin Golf app via Bluetooth. When you play a round, it tracks every shot. When you finish, it syncs to your phone. Your Garmin R10 or R50 does the same thing after a sim session. The data lands in the same bucket.

What the Data Actually Shows

You hit 100 balls in your garage. Your driver carry is averaging 245 yards. Your 7-iron is carrying 155. Your spin numbers look clean. You feel good. Then you get to the course and none of it translates.

The question is: why? Is it the mats? The lack of uneven lies? The mental difference between hitting into a screen and hitting into a fairway? Or is it that your sim numbers are just wrong?

The Watch That Does More Than Tell Yardages

The Approach S70 is a capable golf watch. It gives you front/middle/back yardages, hazard distances, and Green View with manual pin positioning. It tracks shot distance automatically. It keeps score. It does all the things a golf watch is supposed to do.

What it also does is track your fitness data (steps, heart rate, sleep, stress) alongside your golf data. Garmin Connect ties it all together. The theory is that your physical state affects your golf performance. If you slept poorly, your swing might be different. If you’re stressed, your tempo might be off. The watch can’t tell you to fix those things, but it can surface the correlation.

The Vivoactive 5 is a cheaper entry point ($299) with the same Garmin Golf app compatibility. It doesn’t have the S70’s dedicated golf features (Green View, PlaysLike Distance), but it tracks shot distance and syncs to the same account. If you only care about the sim-to-course data loop, the Vivoactive 5 is enough.

The Gap Garmin Isn’t Filling

Garmin has built this ecosystem, but they don’t surface the connection. The Garmin Golf app shows your sim sessions and your on-course rounds in separate tabs. There’s no “compare your sim driver to your course driver” view. There’s no trends graph that overlays both data sets. The raw data is there, but the insight layer is missing.

This is a software problem, not a hardware problem. Garmin could build a “Sim-to-Course Report” that shows you:

They haven’t done it. Maybe they will. Maybe it’s coming in a future Garmin Golf app update. But right now, the connection is buried. You have to actively look for it.

This is also where third-party apps could step in. The Garmin Golf API (such as it is) allows data export. A smart developer could build a dashboard that pulls your sim data and your course data into a single view. Nobody has done it yet. Which means there’s an opportunity here for someone who wants to build the tool that Garmin should have built.

Why This Matters More Than You Think

The home golf simulator market is growing fast. The wearable market is growing faster. These two trends are converging, and Garmin is the only company that sits at the intersection of both worlds. Apple makes watches. Fitbit makes fitness trackers. Samsung makes phones. Garmin makes launch monitors and watches and the software that connects them. That vertical integration is a genuine competitive advantage, and they’re not doing enough with it.

For the home sim owner, the implication is simple: if you already own a Garmin watch, you’re sitting on a data set that you’re not using. Your sim practice and your course performance are already connected. The ecosystem is already built. You just need to look at the numbers.

For someone shopping for a launch monitor, the Garmin ecosystem is a legitimate tiebreaker. The R10 at $599 is already the best value in portable launch monitors. The R50 at $2,999 is a premium camera-based unit that competes with the SkyTrak+ and Bushnell Launch Pro. Both get more valuable when you add a Garmin watch, because the data loop becomes real.

The Garmin Approach watch is the piece that connects your sim practice to your real golf. The data already flows through the same Garmin Golf app. The ecosystem is already unified. The only thing missing is someone pointing out that the connection exists.

If you have a Garmin R10 or R50 and you’re serious about getting better, buy the watch. Buy it because it closes the loop between what you practice and what you play. Yardages on the course? Every phone app does that. The feedback loop — that’s the difference between hitting balls in your garage and actually improving your golf game.

Your sim data and your course data are already in the same room. They just need an introduction.
