Garmin Ecosystem: Watch + Launch Monitor Feedback Loop
The Garmin Golf app is the only place where your on-course shot data and your indoor simulator practice live in the same place. If you wear a Garmin Approach watch (S62, S70) and hit balls into a Garmin R10 or R50, the app combines both datasets. The Ecosystem Nobody Else Has

How the Data Flows

You play a round of golf with your Approach S70 on your wrist. The watch tracks every shot: club used, distance, accuracy, whether you hit the green. It uploads that data to the Garmin Golf app automatically when you finish the round.

It’s not a perfect system — the app UI is showing its age, and the spin data from the R10 is estimated, not measured. But the core feedback loop works. The Virtual Caddie Piece
The watch adds another layer. The Approach S70 has a Virtual Caddie feature that recommends clubs based on your historical shot data. After five rounds, it starts suggesting which club to hit based on the hole layout, wind, and your past performance.
The catch is that the Virtual Caddie pulls from your on-course data only. It doesn’t use your R10 practice data. If you only play twice a month, the watch doesn’t have much to work with. The recommendation will be rough at best. Garmin’s forums are full of people complaining that the Virtual Caddie suggests a pitching wedge on a 180-yard par 3 because it doesn’t have enough data points.
But here’s where the R10 changes the equation. If you’re hitting 200 balls a week in the garage with the R10, the Garmin Golf app builds a detailed distance profile for every club in your bag. That data is available in the app. The Virtual Caddie doesn’t use it yet, but the infrastructure is there. The pieces are in place for Garmin to connect practice data to course recommendations. The Real Cost of the Ecosystem
The ecosystem has a price. The Garmin Golf membership is $99.99/year for the full feature set — simulator access, advanced metrics, video storage. If you’re paying $99/year for the watch integration on top of that, you’re looking at $200/year in ongoing costs. The R10 itself is $599. The R50 is $899. The Approach S70 is $650. The all-in cost to get the full ecosystem feedback loop is around $1,500 in hardware plus $100/year in software. That’s a lot. But compare it to buying a SkyTrak+ ($2,995) plus a separate rangefinder or GPS app subscription. The Garmin approach is cheaper and gives you more connected data.
Where It Falls Short
The Garmin Golf app is dated. The UI hasn’t been meaningfully updated in years. Navigation is clunky, data visualization is basic, and the social features feel like an afterthought. The spin data is the other big limitation. The R10 estimates spin rather than measuring it directly. The R50 improves on this with direct spin measurement, but it’s still radar-based, not photometric. If you’re trying to dial in wedge gapping with precision, the Garmin ecosystem isn’t the right tool. The feedback loop is useful for distance data, not spin data.
And the Virtual Caddie, as mentioned, has known issues. The algorithm isn’t transparent. Outlier shots can throw off recommendations. Garmin’s recommended fix is to retire your clubs and start fresh with new data — which is a workaround, not a solution.
Why This Matters More Than Accuracy Specs
The home golf simulator market is obsessed with accuracy. Which launch monitor has the tightest spin axis tolerance? Which one measures club path within 0.1 degrees? These questions matter for fitting and professional use. For the weekend golfer building a sim in their garage, they’re mostly noise.
The data that actually helps you improve is the gap between your practice and your play. The R10 is accurate enough to tell you your carry distance within 2-3% of a $5,000 GC3. The S70 is accurate enough to track your on-course distances reliably. The combination of the two, in one app, gives you information that no single piece of hardware can provide.
Garmin’s competitors are selling accuracy. Garmin is selling a feedback loop. For the golfer who practices at home and plays on the course, the feedback loop is more valuable than the last 1% of accuracy.
The Verdict
