And most of you are spending money on the flat part of the curve — this is the diminishing returns problem the industry doesn’t want you to notice.

Every launch monitor buyer asks the same question — “How accurate is it?” — but the better question is: “How accurate does it need to be for what I’m actually going to do with it?”

Let’s start with the data. These are ballpark figures from independent testing and community consensus — the exact numbers vary by environment and setup, but the relative differences are consistent across every test I’ve seen.

$1,500-2,500 tier (SkyTrak+, Bushnell Launch Pro, Square Golf Omni)

The Technology Choice the Industry Ignores: Radar vs Camera

There’s a dimension to the accuracy curve that most articles skip entirely: the technology these monitors use to measure. And it matters enormously for indoor home sims.

Camera-based monitors (photometric/stereoscopic) take pictures of the ball at impact and calculate flight instantly. They need 8-10 ft of depth. They’re immune to interference from ceiling fans, fluorescent lights, and metal studs. Used by: SkyTrak+, Eye Mini, GC3, BLP, GCQuad.

Doppler radar monitors bounce radio waves off the ball and track it through the air. They need 14-18+ ft of depth. They suffer from ceiling reflections and RF interference indoors. Used by: Garmin R10, Mevo+, TrackMan.

The site’s stance is clear: camera wins for indoor home sims. The “radar is better” belief comes from outdoor tour use — TrackMan dominates the PGA Tour because it works in open air, not because it’s better in a garage. For home use, camera-based units measure at the point of impact with no environmental interference, and they fit in tighter spaces.

This doesn’t mean radar units are useless indoors. The Garmin R10 and MLM2Pro remain strong recommendations at their price points — but they’re strong despite their radar limitation, not because of it. The R10 works well enough in most garages; the MLM2Pro’s hybrid approach (camera for spin, radar for ball flight) mitigates some of the weakness. But if you have a low ceiling, metal studs, ceiling fans, or less than 14 ft of depth, a camera-based unit is the better choice regardless of price.

The difference between a $200 monitor and a $7,000 monitor is smaller than the difference between your best swing and your worst swing on any given club. The monitor is not the limiting factor. You are.

This doesn’t mean all monitors are the same. The $200 tier is noisy. You’ll see numbers that don’t make sense sometimes. The ball speed reading on your 7-iron will bounce between 95 and 110 across 10 swings, and you won’t know how much of that is you versus the monitor. That’s frustrating.

But the $500-700 tier — the Garmin R10 and Rapsodo MLM2Pro — is the most interesting spot on the market because these units sit at the knee of the accuracy curve. They’re accurate enough that your swing variance is the dominant source of noise. The monitor’s error is smaller than the gap between your good swings and your bad ones. Where the Gaps Actually Live — What the Industry Won’t Tell You

The meaningful differences between tiers aren’t in ball speed or carry distance. Those plateau hard by $700. The real differences are in two areas: spin measurement and club data.

If you hit balls in your garage 2-3 times a week and want to track your distances, see if you’re getting faster, and play GSPro rounds, the Garmin R10 at $500 (or better, the MLM2Pro at $700) is all you need. The spin data on the MLM2Pro is good enough to tell you whether your wedge gapping is working. The ball speed data is good enough to show you whether your swing speed program is working. The carry distance is good enough to build a distance chart that’s more accurate than your current guesses. There are exactly three scenarios where spending more than $1,500 on a launch monitor makes sense. If you’re not in one of these, save your money.

You’re being fitted for clubs. If you’re buying new irons and want to dial in your lofts, shafts, and lie angles, the club data from a Bushnell Launch Pro or GC3 is worth the investment. A fitting session at a shop costs $150-300. If you’re doing multiple fittings per year, owning the tool pays for itself.

You’re a coach or you teach. If you’re reading data for other people, you need data you can defend. The community standard for club data is measured, not estimated. A GC3 or Eye XO2 is the minimum for professional credibility.

You’re a single-digit handicap who plays in tournaments. If you’re grinding to get from a 4 to a 2, the marginal accuracy improvement matters. The difference between a 100 rpm spin variance and a 50 rpm variance could change how you gap your wedges. But even then, you’d probably get more value from a coach than a monitor upgrade.

The answer is simple: the launch monitor is not the whole simulator.
