Every baseball team that buys a $15,000 TrackMan unit creates demand that drives down component costs for the $200 consumer units. The engineering is already paid for. But its revenue is increasingly diversified across baseball, soccer, American football, and tennis. The 2025 launch of the TrackMan iO — a $13,995 ceiling-mounted indoor unit — was marketed as a golf product. But the sensor technology underneath is identical to what the company sells to MLB teams for pitching analysis.

If a company like Rapsodo decides that baseball and softball are where the growth is, how much engineering attention does the MLM2Pro get in 2027 versus the Pro 3.0 baseball unit? Rapsodo already has Shohei Ohtani as a brand ambassador — the most recognizable two-way athlete in sports. That’s a bigger marketing investment than anything the company has done in golf.

The golf launch monitor market benefits from cross-sport R&D spillover today. But spillover is not guaranteed. If the cross-sport markets get big enough to support dedicated engineering teams, the golf versions could become afterthoughts — ports rather than primary products.

What This Actually Means for Your Garage

Let me be specific about what this changes for someone building or upgrading a home sim.

If you’re buying a launch monitor in 2026, stop filtering by “golf launch monitor.” Start asking whether the manufacturer has a cross-sport business. TrackMan? Yes — baseball, soccer, football, tennis. Rapsodo? Yes — baseball, softball, golf. Full Swing? Yes — golf and baseball. FlightScope? Yes — baseball and golf. The companies with cross-sport revenue streams have more R&D budget, better software teams, and longer product roadmaps than the golf-only companies.
