But that’s the reality of floor-based launch monitors. They sit next to the ball, or behind you, or off to the side, and they’re always in the way. You’re stepping around them. You’re repositioning them when a lefty wants to hit. You’re checking alignment every session. You’re worried about a ricochet hitting the $2,000 camera sitting next to the ball.

Overhead launch monitors solve all of that by moving the hardware to the ceiling. The cameras look down at the hitting zone from above, out of the way, permanently aligned, always ready. The floor stays clean. The unit never gets bumped. The hitting zone is big enough that you can drop a ball anywhere in a 2-foot radius and it registers.

The catch is that mounting things to your ceiling requires a ceiling high enough to mount them, and these systems start at $5,000 for the cheapest option. 1. Zero daily setup. This is the big one. You walk into your simulator room, press the power button, and start swinging. No aligning the unit. No checking the ball position. If you’re building a full simulator room from scratch — enclosure, screen, projector, computer, hitting mat, the whole thing — the overhead premium is a smaller percentage of the total build cost. But the category as a whole is a luxury. The same way a $5,000 Herman Miller office chair is better than a $200 Staples chair, but most people don’t need a Herman Miller. The overhead is the Herman Miller of launch monitors. It’s better. It’s more comfortable. It’s more expensive. And the vast majority of people will be perfectly happy with the $200 chair.

If you have the ceiling height, the budget, and the commitment to a permanent setup, the VTrack or ProTee VX will give you the best home simulator experience money can buy under $7,000. If you don’t have all three, spend the difference on a better screen or a nicer mat. Your swing won’t know the difference.
