Mark Darbon sat down with reporters at Royal Birkdale on Wednesday, the day before the 154th Open Championship. He was asked about the golf ball rollback. He said something that, three years ago, would have been unthinkable: the R&A is re-examining Model Local Rules.

That’s governing body speak for “bifurcation is back on the table.”

If you’ve been following the distance debate since 2023, you know the story. The USGA and R&A proposed a universal rollback — one ball, shorter for everyone, pros and amateurs alike. The PGA Tour and equipment manufacturers pushed back. The governing bodies abandoned the Model Local Rule approach and went with a universal standard instead. Implementation was set for 2028 for pros, 2030 for everyone else.

That was the plan. Then last month, at the U.S. Open, USGA CEO Mike Whan dropped a hint that the door was open again. Now Darbon has kicked it off its hinges.

“The PGA Tour and its players have shown an openness to look at some Model Local Rules,” Darbon said. “It would be remiss of us not to take some time to explore some of the other alternatives.”

The translated version: the universal rollback wasn’t working. The math didn’t math. Cameron Young played a prototype ball that would conform to the new standards and lost basically nothing. The 2030 plan was going to widen the gap between the longest and shortest hitters, not close it. The governing bodies knew it.

So they’re going back to the idea that was on the table in 2023: a separate ball for elite competition. Pros play shorter. The rest of us play what we’re playing now. That’s the Model Local Rule approach. That’s bifurcation, whatever you want to call it.

What Bifurcation Actually Means

The current rollback plan was designed to be a single, clean solution. One standard. One ball. Everybody loses a little distance. The field stays level.

The problem is that real golf balls don’t behave like lab simulations. A high-launch, high-spin player like Cameron Young can adapt to a shorter ball and lose almost nothing. A low-launch, low-spin player who’s already fighting for carry distance loses more. The gap widens rather than narrowing. The USGA acknowledged this at Shinnecock last month: the updated ODS testing approach “may not achieve the desired results.”

The Model Local Rule approach solves this differently. Instead of changing the ball for everyone, tournament organizers require elite players to use a ball tested under more restrictive conditions. The PGA Tour uses it, the DP World Tour uses it, the Masters uses it. The rest of us — amateur golfers, weekend warriors, home sim enthusiasts — continue playing with current equipment.

That’s the theory. The practical reality is more complicated, and the complications are where it gets interesting for anyone who owns a launch monitor.

The Sim Angle Nobody Is Talking About

The golf media is covering this as a governance story. USGA vs PGA Tour. Manufacturers vs course architects. Rory supports it, Tiger supports it, the equipment companies hate it. That’s the narrative.

What nobody is writing about is what this means for the home golf sim community. And that’s a miss, because we’re the ones who are going to feel this change first.

Your launch monitor captures every data point that matters for the rollback debate. Ball speed. Launch angle. Spin rate. Carry distance. Total distance. The same metrics the USGA uses in its ODS testing are the metrics you see on your screen after every swing in your garage.

The governing bodies are having a debate about distance, and the people with the best data to inform that debate are sitting in their basements hitting into nets.

The Bifurcation Paradox

If bifurcation happens — pros use a shorter ball, amateurs use current equipment — then the home sim community is in a weird spot. You’re playing with the “pro” ball while actual pros are playing with a reduced-distance ball. The equipment you’re using in your garage is theoretically what the best players in the world would use if they weren’t subject to MLRs.

That’s a strange inversion. The home sim guy in his garage is playing with the same ball specs as Rory McIlroy would if he were playing a casual round. The ball he hits on GSPro is the ball that conforms to the 2023 ODS standard. The ball Rory hits at the 2030 Masters is a shorter version.

Does that make home sim practice more or less relevant? More. If you’re practicing with the ball that flies farther, you’re training for the conditions you’ll actually play in — because you’re not a PGA Tour pro, and the MLR doesn’t apply to you. The sim is the only place where you can practice with the exact equipment you’ll use on the course, without having to worry about what the governing bodies decided for elite competition.

The Data Angle

The Toptracer technology at the Open Championship is the same technology that powers home sims. Camera-based launch monitors tracking ball flight, spin, and launch conditions. The R&A is sitting at Birkdale looking at Toptracer data that shows how far the world’s best players hit it. And the same data is being generated in thousands of garages every night.

The difference is that the home sim data is longitudinal. A PGA Tour pro might hit 200 drives in a tournament week. A home sim user might hit 200 drives in a single practice session, every week, for years. The data set is enormous. The trends are visible.

If the USGA and R&A want to understand how a shorter ball would affect different swing types, they should look at the data coming out of home sims. Not just robot testing. Not just tour-level TrackMan data. The full spectrum of swing speeds, launch angles, and spin rates that real golfers produce. That data exists. It’s being generated right now, in garages across the country, by people who care deeply about the numbers.

What This Means for Your Setup

If you’re building a home sim right now, this doesn’t change your buying decision. The rollback is coming. The question is whether it applies to everyone or just the pros. And if you’re sitting in your garage with a launch monitor, you’re going to know the answer before anyone else does.
