RCT and Reflective Golf Balls: The $70/Dozen Question About Simulator Accuracy

RCT balls, RPT balls, marked balls — the sim golf ball market is confusing on purpose. Here's which ones actually matter, which launch monitors need them, and which are a waste of money.

Do you need special golf balls for your launch monitor to work properly? It depends on how your launch monitor measures spin. Radar-based units (Garmin R10/R50, FlightScope Mevo+, Full Swing KIT, TrackMan 4) struggle to read spin accurately indoors because there’s not enough ball flight for the radar to track. The solution is a ball with a metallic reflector inside — Titleist RCT balls. Camera-based units (GC3, SkyTrak+, Square Golf, Uneekor) read spin optically by photographing the ball at impact. They don’t need special balls. The exception is the Rapsodo MLM2Pro, which uses a printed pattern (RPT) on Callaway Chrome Tour balls to measure spin. Most sim owners are buying balls they don’t need.


The Problem That RCT Balls Solve

Here’s the technical problem that $70/dozen golf balls exist to fix.

Radar-based launch monitors work by bouncing radio waves off the ball and measuring the Doppler shift as it flies. This works great outdoors where the ball travels 200+ yards through the beam. Indoors, your ball hits a screen 8-12 feet away. The radar gets maybe 50 milliseconds of flight data. That’s not enough to measure spin accurately, so the unit estimates spin based on launch angle, ball speed, and club data.

The estimates are decent. They’re not measured.

The Titleist RCT ball has a thin metallic layer embedded inside the cover — a radar reflector — that makes the ball show up more clearly to the Doppler sensor. The radar gets a stronger signal in less time. Instead of estimating spin, it can measure it.

Titleist says the core performance of the Pro V1 and Pro V1x is identical in the RCT version. Same compression, same dimple pattern, same feel, same spin characteristics against a wedge. The only difference is the reflective layer that makes it visible to radar in a short indoor window.

Which Launch Monitors Need RCT Balls

Titleist’s own validation list is short. Four launch monitors are officially validated to work with RCT indoors:

Every other launch monitor either doesn’t need RCT or hasn’t been validated. Here’s the breakdown by technology type.

Radar-based units that benefit from RCT:

The Garmin R10 is the biggest beneficiary. Its indoor spin readings are famously unreliable — every review mentions it. The R10 estimates spin by default, and the estimate is often wrong by 500-1,000 RPM. With RCT balls, the R10 can actually measure spin instead of guessing. Multiple community tests show RCT balls reduce the R10’s indoor spin error from ~15% to under 5%. The Garmin R50 has a more sophisticated dual-radar setup and handles indoor spin better than the R10, but still benefits from RCT.

The Full Swing KIT and FlightScope Mevo+ have the same problem: indoor spin is calculated, not measured. RCT fixes that. TrackMan 4 is the most capable radar unit indoors and already does a better job with spin than the others, but RCT takes it from “good enough” to “lab grade.”

Radar-based units that don’t benefit:

The Garmin Approach G82 uses a combination of radar and GPS tracking. It’s a handheld practice device, not a simulator launch monitor. RCT won’t help because the G82 doesn’t feed spin data into sim software.

The Blue Tees Rainmaker and Voice Caddie SC4 Pro use small onboard displays and measure basic ball data. Neither validates RCT, and neither produces the kind of spin data that would benefit from it.

Camera-based units — don’t need RCT at all:

Every camera-based launch monitor reads spin optically. The GC3, GCQuad, SkyTrak+, SkyTrak ST MAX, Square Golf, Square Omni, Uneekor EYE XO2, Foresight Falcon, TruGolf Apogee — they all use high-speed cameras that photograph the ball at impact and track its rotation visually. No reflector needed. RCT balls work exactly the same as regular balls on these units because the camera doesn’t care what’s inside the cover.

If you own any camera-based launch monitor, RCT balls are a waste of money. Period. The ball’s spin behavior will be identical whether you use a $5 Pro V1 or a $70/dozen RCT version. The camera measures what it sees.

The one weird exception is some overhead camera systems (Uneekor, Foresight Falcon) that can optionally use marked balls for more precise spin tracking. The marks are the standard alignment dots you’d draw with a Sharpie — you don’t need special balls for that.

The Rapsodo Exception: RPT Balls

Rapsodo’s MLM2Pro is camera-based, but its Impact Vision camera needs a reference pattern to measure spin. The ball needs to have markings on it so the camera can track rotation between frames. Rapsodo solved this by partnering with Callaway to produce the Chrome Tour with RPT — a 27-mark printed pattern that the camera reads at 240 fps.

The RPT system is different from Titleist RCT. RCT is a radar reflector inside the ball. RPT is a printed pattern on the surface. They solve the same problem (spin measurement) for different technologies (radar vs. camera).

You don’t need RPT balls for the MLM2Pro if you’re okay with estimated spin. The unit will still produce ball speed, launch angle, and carry distance without RPT. But spin rate and spin axis are only measured when the RPT pattern is visible. Without it, those numbers are calculated guesses.

Three RPT balls come in the box with every MLM2Pro. Replacement sleeves run $70/dozen from Rapsodo, which is steep for a ball that costs about the same to manufacture as a regular Chrome Tour.

The Honest Economics

Let’s talk about what this actually costs.

Titleist Pro V1 RCT: ~$55/dozen on Amazon, $60 from Titleist direct. Callaway Chrome Tour RPT: ~$70/dozen from Rapsodo. Regular Pro V1: ~$55/dozen. Regular Chrome Tour: ~$52/dozen.

The RCT premium over standard Pro V1 is essentially zero at retail. That’s the part worth paying attention to. Titleist prices RCT the same as regular Pro V1/Pro V1x. You pay the same price for a ball that works better indoors. If you use Pro V1s anyway, buy the RCT version instead.

The RPT balls are a different story. You’re paying a $18/dozen premium over regular Chrome Tour because Rapsodo controls the supply and knows you have no alternative if you want measured spin on the MLM2Pro. That markup is annoying but defensible — without RPT, the MLM2Pro’s spin data is estimated, and you’re leaving the unit’s best feature unused.

The Real Question: Do You Need Measured Spin?

The industry does a terrible job of explaining this.

For 80% of home sim owners, estimated spin is fine. You’re hitting balls in your garage for fun, running GSPro, playing virtual rounds with friends. Your 7-iron carries 160 yards instead of 158 because the spin estimate was off by 400 RPM. You’ll never notice. The round plays the same. The score ends up in the same range.

For the 20% who need measured spin — club fitters, instructors, serious competitors, anyone whose practice translates directly to on-course performance — RCT or RPT balls matter. If you’re making swing changes based on spin numbers, you want those numbers to be real. Using RCT balls with a Garmin R10 is the difference between “my spin dropped 500 RPM” being a guess vs. being a fact.

The honest take: if you own a radar-based launch monitor and you’re not doing professional-level work, buy one sleeve of RCT balls. Hit 20 shots with them and 20 with your regular ball. Compare the spin numbers. If the difference is under 300 RPM, send the sleeve back and stop worrying. If the difference is 500+ RPM, RCT is worth it for any session where data quality matters.

If you own a camera-based unit, save your money. Buy regular balls. The camera doesn’t care what’s inside.

The Recommendation

Buy RCT balls if you own a Garmin R10, R50, FlightScope Mevo+, or Full Swing KIT, and you care about whether your spin numbers are real. Don’t buy them if you have a camera-based unit. Buy RPT balls if you own an MLM2Pro and want measured spin. Skip them if estimated spin is good enough for your game.

Titleist does not sell RCT balls at a markup, which is either generous or strategic. Either way, if you’re already buying Pro V1s, the switch is free. Rapsodo does charge a premium for RPT, which is annoying but understandable.

The secret the industry doesn’t want you to know: a $2 roll of reflective tape applied to a regular ball works almost as well as RCT for most radar-based monitors. It’s not as clean, it affects ball flight slightly differently at high spin rates, and the tape can peel off mid-swing. But if $55/dozen is too much, a Sharpie dot pattern on whatever ball you already own will improve your camera-based unit’s spin tracking for free. And a small piece of aluminum tape will improve your radar-based unit’s readings for pennies.

The technology is impressive. The marketing is muddy. And the honest answer is: most people don’t need them. But if you do, they work.
