Everyone in the sim industry talks about the same three things: how many home sims are selling, how many venues are opening, and how the putting problem is finally getting solved. Those are the obvious stories. They get the headlines, the investor decks, the breathless industry analysis.

There’s a fourth story that nobody talks about. The sim industry already won a major golf market, captured nearly 100% of it, and done it so quietly that most people in the sim industry don’t even realize it’s theirs.

Club fitting.

The $1.8 billion golf club fitting services market — projected to hit $3.6 billion by 2034, growing at 8.1% annually — now runs almost entirely on launch monitor technology. The July 2026 State of Club Fitting report surveyed 1,268 golf shops across 50 states and found that 87% of club fittings happen indoors using launch monitors or simulator bays. TrackMan appears in 66% of tech-equipped fitting shops. Foresight (GCQuad, GC3) comes second at 28%. FlightScope is at 8%. SAM PuttLab, Full Swing, and SkyTrak fill in the rest.

The shop that still fits clubs by having you hit balls into a field and watching where they land is now a specialty business. The standard is a launch monitor in a bay, the same technology stack that powers every home sim and commercial venue.

The sim industry won the fitting market by accident. It just happened to have the better technology for a problem fitting needed to solve: measuring how a golf club and a golf ball interact at impact, doing it precisely, and doing it in a controlled environment. The same technology that lets a guy in his garage play Pebble Beach on a Thursday night is the technology that tells a fitter whether you need a stiff shaft or a regular one.

TrackMan’s Fitting Fortress

TrackMan is the name that matters most in this story. The company that gets the most attention for its $20,000 launch monitors and its PGA Tour broadcast presence has its most defensible business not in entertainment or instruction — it’s in fitting.

TrackMan Performance Studios are expanding. Club Champion, the largest independent fitting chain in North America with 130+ locations, has used TrackMan as its default launch monitor for nearly a decade. Every new Club Champion bay that opens — the most recent one in San Diego’s Mission Valley in late July 2026 — ships with a TrackMan on the wall. Club Champion has layered its own AI Fitter Co-Pilot software on top, a proprietary data layer that cross-references swing profiles against tens of thousands of previous fittings. TrackMan supplies the measurement. Club Champion supplies the interpretation.

The fitting market is TrackMan’s economic engine room. The company has no product below $13,995 when the consumer market spans from Shot Scope at $199 to Garmin at $400 to Square at $1,600 to Uneekor at $3,199. The consumer market is enormous and growing fast. TrackMan is absent from it by design. But the fitting market is their fortress. Every major manufacturer uses TrackMan as reference-standard for fitting data. PGA Tour and DP World Tour fitting trucks run TrackMan exclusively. The top-100 teachers and college programs use TrackMan. The broadcast halo feeds the fitting credibility, which feeds the commercial business, which funds the R&D that keeps the broadcast halo intact. It’s a closed loop, and it’s held for a decade.

That fortress has cracks. Foresight’s GCQuad and GC3 have taken 28% of the tech-equipped fitting market, and they’ve done it by being better indoors. TrackMan is radar-based — it measures the ball after it’s in flight. Foresight is camera-based — it photographs the ball at impact. For fitting, where you care about face angle, club path, and impact location at the exact moment of contact, camera-based systems have a structural advantage. The fact that TrackMan still holds 66% despite that technical gap is a testament to brand inertia, fitting-chain relationships, and the fact that “TrackMan” is a verb in a way “Foresight” isn’t yet.

The AI Layer Changes the Math

What’s being built on top of the fitting bay’s launch monitor is more interesting than whose launch monitor sits there.

Wilson FitAi launched its second-generation fitting system in early 2026, and it’s a genuinely different approach. The original version used a Blast Motion sensor attached to a fitting club. The new version connects directly to a Foresight GC Quad launch monitor, captures 25+ swing metrics in real time, and feeds them into a proprietary AI engine that recommends club head, shaft flex, lie angle, and loft after as few as five swings. The AI has been trained on thousands of previous fittings and improves with every new session.

The key insight in Wilson’s approach: the fitter isn’t being replaced. The AI handles the pattern-matching and the database lookups that a human fitter would need years of experience to develop. The fitter applies judgment, tests the recommendation, and adjusts based on what they see. The system gets you in the ballpark faster. The fitter makes sure you get the right seat.

Club Champion’s AI Fitter Co-Pilot works on the same principle but at chain scale. With 130+ locations generating thousands of fittings per year, Club Champion has built a proprietary database of swing profiles and equipment outcomes that no launch monitor company can replicate alone. The AI cross-references a customer’s TrackMan data against every similar fitting in the database and produces recommendations that get more accurate as the database grows. Think of it as a recommendation engine for golf clubs, trained on the largest dataset of fitting outcomes in the industry.

SwingFitAI goes even further. It adds biomechanical tracking — high-frame-rate video co-processed alongside launch monitor data — to build a complete “SwingPrint” that maps body kinematics, joint angles, and shaft load curves throughout the entire swing. Standard launch monitors only see the clubhead at impact and the ball in flight. SwingFitAI sees everything the body did to produce that impact. The company’s pitch to fitting studios is straightforward: “Launch monitors on their own are no longer enough.”

The fitting industry is moving from “which shaft gives the best numbers” to “which shaft best matches how this specific human being delivers a golf club.” That’s a much harder problem. And the only way to solve it at scale is with more launch monitors, more data, and more AI running on top of both.

The $199 Fitting Bay

The most interesting implication for the sim industry is what happens when fitting-grade technology reaches the price floor.

The Shot Scope LM1 costs $199. It measures club speed, ball speed, smash factor, launch angle, spin rate, carry distance, and total distance. Five years ago, that data package cost $15,000 from TrackMan. Two years ago, it cost $2,000 from SkyTrak. Now it’s $199. It’s not TrackMan-accurate on every metric, particularly spin axis and club path. But for a pro shop that currently fits clubs by having customers hit range balls and reading a launch monitor that costs more than the shop’s monthly rent, a $199 device that gives you ball speed, spin, and carry is transformational.

The Club Fitting Directory report identified 1,268 golf shops in the US, of which 568 (44.8%) explicitly offer club fitting. That leaves roughly 700 shops that could add fitting with a $199 hardware investment. The LM1’s form factor also matters for fitting: it’s wallet-sized, sits six feet behind the ball, and sets up in 15 seconds. A pro shop that doesn’t have space for a dedicated fitting bay can put an LM1 on a shelf, pull it out when a customer wants to get fitted, and have it running before the customer finishes their warm-up swings.

This is the pattern that has played out across every tier of the launch monitor market. Each price drop opens a new addressable market that didn’t exist at the previous price point. The $2,000 SkyTrak opened the home sim market. The $599 Garmin R10 opened the casual sim market. The $199 Shot Scope LM1 opens the fitting market for shops that couldn’t afford a fitting launch monitor before. The volume opportunity at $199 is larger than the volume opportunity at $599, which was larger than the volume opportunity at $2,000. The fitting market is the next layer.

What This Means for the Sim Industry

Three consequences flow from the fact that the sim industry captured club fitting.

First, the fitting market is a demand generator for sim technology. Every fitting session is a demonstration of what a launch monitor can do. The customer who gets fitted on a TrackMan at Club Champion walks away understanding the value of ball data, club data, and simulator course play. A percentage of those customers will buy a home sim. The fitting bay is a showroom for the sim industry, and fitting customers walk through it at scale — the fitting market processes millions of sessions per year.

Second, the AI fitting layer creates a moat for specific ecosystems. Wilson FitAi runs on Foresight GC Quad. Club Champion’s AI Fitter Co-Pilot runs on TrackMan. SwingFitAI runs on anything but requires its own camera setup. The fitting AI tools are being built on specific platforms, and they’re becoming another reason to choose one launch monitor ecosystem over another. If you’re a fitting studio choosing between TrackMan and Uneekor, the fact that TrackMan has the Club Champion AI layer and Uneekor doesn’t is a real decision factor. The AI layer becomes a competitive moat that gets wider the more data it processes.

Third, the commoditization of fitting hardware accelerates the shift to software value. When a $199 launch monitor can capture meaningful fitting data, the hardware itself stops being the differentiator. The differentiator becomes what you do with the data — the AI engine, the recommendation accuracy, the database of previous fittings. That’s a software business, not a hardware business. The fitting industry is recapitulating the same hardware-to-software shift happening in the broader sim market, just a few years ahead.

The sim industry’s $1.8 billion fitting market is not a side business. It’s an infrastructure layer that generates demand, validates the technology, and builds the data sets that will power the next generation of AI-driven tools. The fitting bay is the B2B market nobody in the sim industry talks about. But it’s the one that’s already been won.
