The Three Numbers That Actually Matter: How to Practice on Your Simulator Without Overthinking Every Swing

Your launch monitor can show you 47 data points. Three of them will make you better. The rest are noise that keeps you from improving.

Most sim owners don't improve because they're drowning in 47 data points. Only 3 numbers matter: carry distance consistency, horizontal dispersion, and best-to-worst strike gap. Everything else is noise.

How do you actually get better practicing on a home golf simulator? Three data points predict improvement better than all others combined: carry distance consistency (variance across 10 shots with the same club), horizontal dispersion (the width of your shot pattern), and the ball speed delta between your best and worst strike. Everything else — spin axis, club path, attack angle — is diagnostic data you reach for after you’ve identified a problem, not numbers to track in every session. Most sim owners don’t improve because they’re looking at 47 numbers instead of three.


I’ve been in enough sim rooms to notice a pattern. People who own $7,000 launch monitors don’t necessarily score better than people who own $200 ones. The hardware matters less than what you do with it.

The people who improve know which numbers to ignore.

Your launch monitor can show you ball speed, club speed, smash factor, launch angle, spin rate, spin axis, club path, face angle, attack angle, dynamic loft, face-to-path, low point, apex height, hang time, descent angle, and a dozen other metrics depending on the software.

That’s too many.

If you try to improve all of them at once, you improve none of them. The brain can’t hold 15 swing thoughts. It can barely hold one.

The Three That Predict Improvement

Independent testing and coaching research converge on three metrics that separate improving golfers from those who just hit balls. These are the numbers to track in every session.

Carry distance consistency. Hit ten balls with your 7-iron. Note the carry distance on each. Subtract the shortest from the longest. That range — your dispersion — is the single best predictor of whether you’re getting better. A 15-yard spread means you’re hitting pure shots mixed with mishits. A 5-yard spread means you’re compressing the ball the same way every time. Improving golfers shrink this number. Everyone else watches it bounce between 10 and 20 and wonders why their handicap hasn’t moved.

Horizontal dispersion. Same drill. Ten shots with the same club. How wide is the pattern? The average 15-handicap has a dispersion of roughly 35-40 yards with a 6-iron. A 5-handicap is around 20-25 yards. The difference comes down to how much of the fairway or green they can reliably cover. If your dispersion isn’t shrinking, nothing else you’re tracking matters.

Ball speed delta. The difference between your fastest and slowest ball speed in ten swings with the same club. This tells you how consistently you’re finding the center of the clubface. A delta under 5 mph is good. Under 3 mph is excellent. Over 8 mph means your strike location is all over the face, and you should stop looking at spin numbers until you fix that.

These three numbers measure the same thing: consistency. The ability to reproduce the same strike, the same path, the same face angle, shot after shot. Golf is a game of repetition dressed up as a game of skill.

The Data You Don’t Need (Yet)

Spin axis is interesting. Club path is interesting. Attack angle is interesting. They’re all interesting. They’re also mostly useless if your ball speed delta is 10 mph.

The hierarchy of problems looks like this:

  1. Can you hit the center of the face? (ball speed delta)
  2. Can you hit it the same distance every time? (carry consistency)
  3. Can you control the direction? (horizontal dispersion)
  4. Can you shape the ball intentionally? (spin axis, club path, face angle)

Most amateurs jump to step 4 before they’ve solved step 1. They’re trying to dial in their fade when they hit the toe on three out of ten swings. The simulator makes this worse because it gives you step 4 data on every shot, and it all looks equally important. But it is not.

The Session Structure That Works

A 45-minute session breaks down like this.

Warm-up (5 minutes). Wedges only. Half swings. Don’t look at the screen. The goal is body activation, not data collection.

The Baseline Test (10 minutes). Hit ten shots with your 7-iron. Record your three numbers: average carry, horizontal dispersion width, and ball speed delta. This is your baseline for the day. Do this every session and you’ll see a trend line forming within two weeks.

The Fix Block (20 minutes). Pick one thing to work on. If your ball speed delta was over 5 mph, focus on center-face contact. Put a piece of foot spray on the clubface or use impact tape. Hit 20 balls paying attention only to where the ball meets the face. Ignore distance. Ignore direction. Ignore spin. Just hit the center.

If your ball speed delta was fine but your dispersion was wide, work on path control. The alignment stick drill or the gate drill will clean this up. Hit twenty balls with the same focus.

If both were good, then you get to play with spin axis and club path. Work on shaping the ball after you’ve proven you can hit it consistently straight.

The Re-Test (5 minutes). Hit ten more 7-irons. Same drill as the baseline. Did your three numbers improve? If yes, you fixed something. If no, either you worked on the wrong thing or you need a different approach. Either way, the data tells you.

The Fun Round (5 minutes). Hit some drivers. Play a couple holes. This is the dessert. Don’t skip it entirely — sim golf should still be fun — but don’t let it take over the session.

Why This Works and “Just Hitting Balls” Doesn’t

The problem with unstructured practice is that you never run the same test twice. You hit 7-iron, then driver, then wedge, then 3-wood, then try a punch shot. Every shot is a different input. You can’t measure improvement from a dataset where nothing is held constant.

The baseline test solves this. By running the same ten-shot block with the same club every session, you create a consistent measurement. The trend line over weeks tells you more than any single session’s data.

This is the part that most sim owners miss. They compare today’s best drive to last week’s best drive and think they’re improving. The ten-shot average with your 7-iron tells you where your floor is. The spread between your best and worst tells you if the floor is rising.

The Mat Problem Nobody Talks About

Simulator mats are designed to be forgiving. They have to be — nobody wants elbow pain after 100 swings. But forgiving mats mask fat shots. A shot that would be a chunk on grass becomes a playable shot on a mat.

This matters for your feedback loop because your launch monitor can’t always tell the difference. Some camera-based units can detect strike location. Most radar units can’t. The data says you hit it solid. Your hands say you hit it solid. But the mat saved you.

The fix is simple: monitor your low point. If your unit tracks it, watch the number. A low point more than two inches behind the ball on a mat would be a divot the size of a dinner plate on grass. If your unit doesn’t track low point, use a towel drill. Place a towel two inches behind the ball. If you hit it, you were too fat. Do this once a week to keep honest.

The Real Reason Most Sim Owners Don’t Improve

Most people turn on the sim, hit 50 balls in 20 minutes, and call it practice. You get better when the practice feels uncomfortable — hitting the same club twenty times and paying attention to every single result, working on the wedge shot you’re bad at rather than the driver you’re good at, facing the fact that your ball speed delta is 12 mph when you’ve been blaming your equipment.

The simulator is the best practice tool ever built for golf. It gives you instant, accurate feedback on every shot. It removes weather, daylight, and range-fee barriers. It can show you exactly what your swing is doing at impact.

But none of that matters if you use it to hit balls rather than to practice.

The three-number system is the simplest way to tip the balance toward practice. Run your baseline test. Pick one fix. Re-test. Track the trend.

Solve your ball speed delta first. Nothing else matters until you can find the center of the face.
