You spend $5,000 on a home golf simulator. You dial in your launch monitor alignment, get your lighting right, and spend hours grooving your swing in GSPro. Your iron game improves. Your driver gets more consistent. You drop three strokes off your handicap by June.
Then you get to a green in the software, the system says “putt,” and everything falls apart.
Your Garmin R10 doesn’t register the ball. The ball rolled 4 miles per hour and your radar unit has no idea what to do with that. You try again. Nothing. You set the gimme circle to 6 feet and move on. Then 8 feet. Then 10. Eventually, you’re just auto-putting every hole, accepting that 40 percent of the shots in a real round of golf are essentially unplayable on your simulator.
You’re not alone. This is the dirty secret of the home golf simulator boom: putting is broken, and the industry knows it.
Why putting is so hard for launch monitors
A driver swing sends a ball at 150+ mph with 2,500+ RPM of spin traveling 40+ feet through the air before it hits anything. That’s a lot of signal for a launch monitor to grab onto. Camera systems photograph the ball at impact. Radar systems bounce waves off it in flight. Both have plenty of data to work with. A putt rolls at 3-6 mph with almost no spin and travels maybe 10 feet before hitting the screen. That is an absurdly small signal. For radar units, the ball moves so slowly and covers so little distance that the system barely has time to build a track before the ball stops. For camera systems, the ball is sitting right next to the sensor at the same height as the ground — the geometry works against you.
Imagine aiming a police radar gun at a toddler crawling across your living room. That’s what we’re asking a $599 launch monitor to do when we set it up for putting.
The three tiers of putting capability
The industry has sorted itself into three categories, and the gap between them is enormous.
Tier 1 — “Putting? We don’t do that here”
The Garmin R10, Shot Scope LM1, and most budget radar units. These devices were designed for full swings and don’t even pretend to handle putting. The R10 technically can detect a putt if you set it up exactly right in perfect conditions, but the community consensus is clear: don’t bother. The data is wrong more often than it’s right, and fighting with it destroys the rhythm of a round.
Most owners in this tier set auto-putt in GSPro and never think about it again. The Simulator Golf Tour uses 6-foot gimme circles as its default, which tells you everything about what the competitive sim community expects from budget hardware.
Tier 2 — “We can try. Results may vary.”
The Bushnell Launch Pro, SkyTrak+, and FlightScope Mevo+ fall here. These mid-tier photometric and hybrid units can detect putts with some reliability, but the experience is inconsistent. A 6-footer might register perfectly one session and ghost-read the next. The GC3 and Bushnell Launch Pro do better than most because of their camera-based tracking, but they still require perfect conditions: the mat must be secured, lighting must be shadow-free, ball placement must be exact, and the unit height must match the putting surface.
The community’s approach to this tier is pragmatic: manual putt for lag putts (where speed control matters and the data is decent), auto-putt for anything under 6 feet. It works, but it’s a compromise.
Tier 3 — “This is the standard.”
The Foresight GCQuad ($22,000), ProTee VX ($6,500), and Uneekor Eye XO ($5,000+) are the only systems where putting data is genuinely reliable. Their overhead or multi-camera geometry gives them a fundamental advantage: they see the ball’s full path rather than trying to capture a side-angle snapshot of a slow-moving object. The GCQuad’s four photometric cameras can track putting with the same precision as full swings.
These are $6,000 to $22,000 launch monitors. If you spent $599 on a Garmin R10, you’re not buying a GCQuad tomorrow. The putting gap is a feature of the price tier you’re in, and most home sim builders are in tiers 1 and 2.
The workarounds (and why they’re not solutions)
The sim community has developed three main workarounds for the putting problem. They all work in the sense that they keep the round moving. None of them solve the underlying issue.
Auto-putt and gimme circles. Every major simulator platform (GSPro, E6 Connect, TGC 2019) includes auto-putt settings. You choose a distance — typically 3-6 feet — and the software automatically holes any putt inside that radius. GSPro also offers “AutoPutt Fixed” (a 2-putt circle for approach shots) and “AutoPutt Random” (software assigns your putts). These are fine for casual rounds, but they strip out 40 percent of the game. You skip the most important shots in golf entirely.
Dedicated putting systems. The ExPutt RG ($349-$469), PUTTR ($699), and PuttView P7 ($4,000) are standalone devices designed specifically for putting practice. They use their own cameras, mats, and software to track putting strokes independent of your main simulator. They work well. The ExPutt tracks face angle, stroke path, ball speed, and tempo with good accuracy. The PUTTR adds AI coaching, online multiplayer, and breaking putt simulation on an 11-foot mat. These are genuine training tools. But they’re separate devices that add cost, take up floor space, and create another screen to look at. They don’t integrate with your simulator round. You practice putting on the ExPutt, then go back to auto-putting on the sim.
Acceptance. The most common workaround, by a wide margin, is just accepting that sim putting is bad and focusing sim practice on full swings. The argument goes: if your sim improves your ball striking by 3 shots a round, that’s better than spending the same money on a putting system that might save 1 shot. It’s a reasonable calculation, but it means the most important skill in golf — the one that separates a 90 from an 80 — gets zero practice time in the average home sim setup.
Who’s trying to fix this
The market has noticed the gap. Several companies are building toward solutions, and they’re taking different approaches.
Garmin is the most interesting because they’re not trying to beat the physics problem. The Approach G82 ($399) pairs with the Garmin Golf app to give you GPS-based green mapping with putt distances and slope readouts. It tells you what the putt should do, and you handle the stroke yourself on a real green. It’s a caddie approach rather than a tracking approach, and it’s honest about what radar can and can’t measure.
The overhead camera trend is the real long-term solution. The Rapsodo CLMPRO (announced at PGA Show 2026, targeting late 2026 launch) brings six-camera overhead tracking to a price point below the current $6,500 floor for ceiling-mounted systems. Overhead geometry is fundamentally better for putting because the camera sees the full ball path from above. If the CLMPRO delivers on its promise — and if Rapsodo prices it aggressively — it could be the first mid-tier unit that handles putting as well as it handles full swings.
The dedicated system makers are getting smarter about integration. The ExPutt and PUTTR are building toward simulator integration. Putting data from these devices needs a path into GSPro and E6 so you can putt through a round using a dedicated putting system and have the results flow into your scorecard. That integration doesn’t exist yet in a seamless way, but it’s the obvious next step.
What this means for your build
Budget tier (under $1,000 total) — accept that you’re building a full-swing practice tool. That’s fine. A Garmin R10 with a net and mat will improve your ball striking more than anything else you can do for the money. Set auto-putt to 6 feet and focus on what your setup does well. If you’re in the mid-tier ($2,000-$5,000), the Bushnell Launch Pro or SkyTrak+ will give you usable putting data for lag putts. Manual putt anything over 8 feet. Auto-putt the short ones. If you want dedicated putting practice, add an ExPutt RG for $349 and spend 15 minutes per session on it. That’s the most efficient putting improvement per dollar available in 2026.
If you’re building a premium sim (over $7,000) — or if you want putting as part of your sim round without compromise — the ProTee VX or a used GCQuad is the only honest answer. The Uneekor Eye XO also handles putting well. Any of these will let you play a full round from tee to green with reliable putting data. The cost is high, but the capability exists at this tier.
And if you can wait, watch the Rapsodo CLMPRO launch. If it delivers overhead camera putting at a price that undercuts the current $6,500 floor by a meaningful margin, it changes the calculation for everyone building in the $3,000-$5,000 range. That’s where the real gap is, and that’s where the industry’s best shot at fixing putting lives.
Putting is the last frontier
The full-swing experience is good enough now that a $600 setup can deliver meaningful improvement. The software ecosystem is mature. The community is massive. But putting remains the unsolved problem, and acknowledging that honestly is better than pretending a $199 radar unit can handle a 4-foot putt.
The industry will figure this out. The combination of cheaper overhead cameras, dedicated putting system integration, and smarter software is going to close the gap within the next 2-3 years. In the meantime, build your sim for what it does well, use the ExPutt for putting practice, and set your gimme to 6 feet. You’ll save yourself the frustration and focus your practice time on the shots that actually register.
