The hardware itself is a camera, so you don’t need special balls — but you do need a stable place to put it every session, you need to align it every time you use it, and if you share the space with anyone who might bump it, you’re realigning it again.
The argument is worse for radar units.
A Garmin R10 costs $500. That’s an incredible price. But to get accurate indoor spin data, you need Titleist RCT balls or similar metallic-dot balls — $35-$55 per dozen. If you hit 100 balls per session, three times a week, you’re burning through a dozen every couple weeks. That’s $400-$700 per year in consumable golf balls alone. Buy one of those. Use it. Love it. Worry about overhead when you have a room that calls for it.
The Upgrade Trap
The standard advice in the sim community is “start with a $500 Garmin R10, then upgrade later.” This is good advice if you’re not sure you’ll actually use a sim. It’s bad advice if you know you’re all-in.

The better framework: decide how committed you are before you spend any money. If you’re not sure — if you’re curious but not convinced — buy the cheapest thing that works. Instead of “should I start cheap?” ask “what’s the right final setup?” For a dedicated room, that answer is often overhead.

The overhead category is not for everyone. It’s a specific solution for a specific kind of buyer: someone building a permanent indoor simulator who plans to use it multiple times per week for years.
If that’s you, the math is better than you think. The EYE XO2 at $11,000 competes with the GC3 at $5,250 plus.. well, the GC3 doesn’t have a subscription, but it sits on the floor, has a small hitting zone, and needs to be moved for lefties.
The Falcon and Trackman iO are in a different league. Those are for buyers who want the best possible data with the least possible friction and are willing to pay for it. They’re the difference between a nice home gym and a commercial-grade training facility in your garage.
The overhead category has been treated as the luxury option for too long. In a permanent build, it makes more sense as the default choice than the upgrade. Higher upfront. Lower ongoing. Better daily experience. And the total cost of ownership over three to five years is competitive with mid-range portable units.
