You’ve been reading reviews for two weeks. You’ve watched the YouTube videos. You’ve priced out three different builds. And somehow you’re still stuck on this one question.
SkyTrak+ or Mevo+.
Two thousand dollars either way. Two of the most popular launch monitors in home golf. And every review you read says the same thing: “Both are great.”
That’s not helpful. That’s a cop-out. That’s the reviewer who doesn’t want to get yelled at in the comments.
I’m not that guy.
Here’s the real answer — told to you straight, like I’m sitting in your garage with a beer while you try to decide.
The Technology: Camera vs. Radar
This is the whole thing. The entire decision lives here. Everything else — accuracy, space requirements, software compatibility — it’s all downstream of this one question:
How does the thing see the ball?
SkyTrak+ uses cameras. High-speed cameras, sitting right next to the ball. When you strike it, they fire a sequence of images — same way a photographer captures a bullet through an apple. The cameras see the first few feet of ball flight and calculate everything from those frames. (I’ve got a full SkyTrak+ review if you want the numbers.)
What that means for you:
- It sits next to the ball, not behind you
- It needs light. A dim garage will give you misreads. Throw up some LED shop lights for $50 and you’re fine.
- You can hit into a net 6 feet away and it works perfectly
- There’s a 5–8 second delay while it processes those images (not a big deal, but it’s real)
Mevo+ uses radar. Doppler radar. Same tech the cop used when he pulled you over on I-85 last year. It sits behind you and bounces radio waves off the ball as it flies downrange. What that means for you:
- It sits behind the ball, needs 8+ feet of ball flight indoors
- Light is irrelevant. Works in a dark garage, outdoors, in a cave.
- Data comes back almost instantly
- Tight spaces? Problem. It needs to “see” the ball fly.
If this sounds like two different products for two different people, you’re paying attention.
One is built for a specific use case. One is built for a different use case. They are not the same thing dressed differently. They are different things that happen to cost the same amount of money.
Accuracy Comparison
Both are within 2–3% of TrackMan. That’s not marketing copy. That’s forum guys — actual nerds who own both and test them side by side — posting the numbers.
But they’re not equal in every category. Here’s where it breaks down.

The Mevo+ gives you better club data. Club path, face angle, face-to-path — radar sees the full ball flight and works backward to figure out what the club did. The SkyTrak+ has gotten better at this with the Plus model (the original was basically useless for club data), but it’s still a step behind.
The SkyTrak+ is more reliable indoors. It doesn’t need 8 feet of ball flight. It works in a closet — literally, I’ve seen guys do it. It works in a garage with the car parked next to you. The Mevo+ needs room, and if you can’t give it room, it’ll throw bad reads all session and you’ll spend the whole time thinking something’s wrong with your swing when really the monitor just can’t see the ball.

“I returned the Mevo+ because my garage is only 12 feet deep. I had it set up and it kept losing my shots. Switched to SkyTrak+ and it worked perfectly. Not the Mevo+’s fault — wrong tool for the space.”

SkyTrak+ has been in the game longer. A lot longer. The software ecosystem is just more mature. More options. More stability. Less fiddling.
Mevo+ works with GSPro and E6 — the two big ones. But that “beta” tag on GSPro support tells you where they are. It works, but it’s not as polished. You’re the beta tester.
TGC 2019 is a real miss for Mevo+. That’s a $950 one-time purchase that gives you thousands of courses with no subscription. If that was your plan — buy once, never pay again — the Mevo+ just eliminated itself from the conversation.
And then there’s Awesome Golf. SkyTrak+ has it. Mevo+ doesn’t. Awesome Golf is this hidden gem — mini-games, family-friendly stuff, your kid can play putt-putt while you work on your driver. If you’ve got kids who might use this thing, that’s a real point in the SkyTrak+ column.
(You’d be surprised how many guys say the family features are what got the wife to sign off. Just saying.)
Price
$1,495 vs $2,000.
They cost the same. I genuinely don’t have a hot take here. Five dollars difference. You spend more than that on range balls before a round.

Indoor vs. Outdoor
This is the whole article in two sentences. Pay attention.
If you’re building an indoor simulator — garage, basement, spare room, the corner of your office — buy the SkyTrak+. The camera system works in tight spaces. The software ecosystem is bigger. The 5-second delay is a non-issue when you’re playing courses (you’ve got time to watch your ball flight hit the screen anyway). It’s the right tool for the job.
If you want to take your launch monitor to the driving range — if you’re the guy who wants one device for indoor practice AND outdoor range sessions — buy the Mevo+. Radar is objectively better outdoors. The SkyTrak+ struggles when sunlight washes out those camera images. The Mevo+ doesn’t care. Radio waves don’t care about the sun.
And if you want both — indoor AND outdoor? That’s where the Mevo+ makes its case. It does both above average. Indoors? Fine with enough space. Outdoors? Excellent. The SkyTrak+ is elite indoors and mediocre outdoors. It’s a specialist. The Mevo+ is a generalist.
Most of you reading this are indoor sim guys. You’re building a garage setup. You’re hitting balls in February while the snow piles up outside. You’re not driving to the range with a launch monitor in your bag. You want to walk into your garage, turn it on, and play Pebble Beach in your socks. (Not sure how much room you need? Verdict
SkyTrak+ for the indoor sim guy. Mevo+ for the guy who needs one device everywhere.
But let me be honest about who most of you are. You’re the indoor sim guy. You know you are. You’ve been looking at garage setups on YouTube at 11 PM. You’ve measured your space. You’ve already told your wife you’re “thinking about it.”
You’re not the range guy. You’re the garage guy.
Get the SkyTrak+. Set it up this weekend. Invite your buddies over on Friday. Watch their faces when you’re standing in your garage playing 17 at Sawgrass in January.
