When the SkyTrak+ was $1,995 and the ST MAX was $1,995, the answer was obvious: buy the ST MAX. Same price, more features. No brainer.
That’s not the question anymore.
The SkyTrak+ is on summer sale at $1,495. The ST MAX is still $1,995. The gap is $500. Same tracking engine. Same sensors. Same accuracy. Same software ecosystem. One has speed training. One saves you $500.
The question now is: is speed training worth $500 to you?
The Big Reveal: Same Tracking Engine

SkyTrak didn’t improve the sensors. They didn’t upgrade the cameras. They didn’t add new data points. The tracking engine — the thing that actually measures your golf shots — is identical.
Both units measure:
- Carry and total distance
- Ball speed
- Back spin and side spin
- Launch angle and side angle
- Descent angle and shot shape
- Club head speed, smash factor, club path, face angle, face-to-path
Same data. Same precision. Same reliability that made the SkyTrak+ the most popular home launch monitor on the market.
The question isn’t “which one tracks better.” They’re the same. The question is: what are you paying $500 extra for?
What the ST MAX Actually Adds
Three things. None of them affect tracking quality.
1. GOLFTEC Speed Training
This is the headliner. The ST MAX includes a guided speed training module built in partnership with GOLFTEC. Structured drills, measurable checkpoints, real-time feedback — designed to help you build swing speed and add distance. It’s exclusive to the ST MAX. SkyTrak+ users can’t access it.
Is it good? Yeah, it’s a proper training tool. Progressive drills, trackable speed gains over time, goal setting. If you’ve ever wanted a structured speed program without paying for a coach or buying separate training aids, this is genuinely useful.
Is it worth $500? That depends entirely on how much you value speed training. If you’re the type who would pay $500 for a dedicated speed training program, the ST MAX is a bargain — you get the launch monitor AND the training. If you’re the type who downloads a free speed training app and forgets about it after three sessions… save your money.
2. Dual USB-C Ports
Two USB-C ports instead of one. Charge and transfer data simultaneously. Nice quality-of-life upgrade. Worth maybe $20.
3. Faster Processor
Slightly snappier shot-to-show time. The SkyTrak+ was never painfully slow. The ST MAX is just a half-beat quicker. Not a reason to spend $500 more.
What’s Still Missing (Both Models)
Neither unit measures angle of attack. At either price, that’s not a complaint. Angle of attack at this tier would be a bonus, not an expectation. The Garmin R50 includes it at $4,999. The Subscription Situation
Same for both units. You need a SkyTrak membership to unlock full features:

- Elite ($499/yr) — everything
The ST MAX’s GOLFTEC speed training is included with any membership tier. Same subscription costs either way.
The Verdict
Here’s where I land.
Buy the SkyTrak+. At $1,495, it’s the best value in the entire SkyTrak lineup. You get the exact same tracking engine, the exact same accuracy, the exact same software ecosystem as the ST MAX — for $500 less. The only things you miss are speed training and dual USB-C ports.
If you are 100% sure you’ll use the GOLFTEC speed training consistently — like, you’ve done speed training programs before and stuck with them — the ST MAX is worth the $500. The training module is legitimately good.
But for most people? Save the $500 and buy the SkyTrak+. Spend that money on a better hitting mat, a GSPro subscription, or a round of golf. The $500 won’t make your SkyTrak+ track differently than the ST MAX, because the tracking is identical.
Who Should Buy What
Buy the SkyTrak+ if:
- You want the best value camera-based launch monitor under $1,500
- You don’t care about speed training (or know you won’t use it)
- You want to save $500 that could go toward a better mat, screen, or GSPro subscription
- You value the exact same accuracy as the ST MAX for $500 less
Buy the ST MAX if:
- You specifically want the GOLFTEC speed training program and will actually use it
- You want dual USB-C ports for simultaneous charging and data transfer
- You want the newer model (longer firmware support window)
- $500 isn’t a meaningful factor in your buying decision
