Golf Simulator Sound Systems: What You Need

Your simulator’s built-in projector speaker is a crime against audio. It’s tinny, it’s positioned behind your head, and it makes the crack of a well-struck drive sound like a pillow fight. If you spent $2,000-plus on a launch monitor and another $1,500 on a projector, don’t ruin the experience with a speaker that belongs in a 2005 laptop.

A proper sound system is the single biggest upgrade for immersion that doesn’t involve swinging a club. The ambient course sounds, the thwack of the ball off the clubface, the crowd murmur at a tournament course – all of it comes through the speakers. Bad speakers flatten it into mush. Good speakers make you feel like you’re actually standing on the first tee.

Here’s what you need, what you don’t, and where to put it.

The Three Sound System Options That Actually Work

Forget the 74-speaker Dolby Atmos cinema setups you see on forums. Here are the three configurations that make sense for a simulator room.

Option 1: Soundbar ($100-$500)

A soundbar mounted below the impact screen is the best value-per-dollar option in sim audio. It sits in front of you, fires sound in the correct direction, and connects to your PC or simulator software with a single cable.

What you get: A single bar with multiple speakers inside. Most have a wireless subwoofer for bass. Some simulate surround sound by bouncing audio off walls.

Where to put it: Mount it on the wall directly below the impact screen. Center it horizontally. Keep it at least 6 inches below the bottom of the screen so a mis-hit ball doesn’t take it out. If your screen comes down to within 6 inches of the floor, mount the soundbar on a low shelf or stand 12-18 inches in front of the screen instead.

The catch: Soundbars can’t do true surround. The virtualized rear channels are OK for casual play, but if you close your eyes and expect to hear birds behind you, you won’t.

Best for: Spare bedrooms, living rooms, small garages, and anyone who wants plug-and-play without running speaker wire.

Option 2: 2.1 Bookshelf Speakers + Subwoofer ($150-$600)

A pair of bookshelf speakers on either side of the screen plus a subwoofer on the floor. This is the sweet spot for sim rooms – better imaging than a soundbar, actual stereo separation, and bass you can feel.

What you get: Left and right speakers with a dedicated subwoofer. The sub handles low frequencies (ball impacts, the rumble of a train passing on the course), the bookshelf speakers handle mids and highs (club strike, commentary, birds).

Where to put them: Front left and right go on the side walls at ear height, angled toward the hitting position. The subwoofer goes on the floor along the front wall, about 6-12 inches from the side wall. Avoid corners – they make bass boomy and indistinct.

The catch: If you’re using passive speakers (anything that doesn’t plug into a wall outlet), you need an amplifier or AV receiver. That’s another box and another cable. Powered speakers (Edifier, Logitech) simplify this.

Best for: Dedicated garage sims, basements, and anyone who wants genuinely good audio without the complexity of 5.1.

Option 3: 5.1 Surround Sound ($300-$1,000+)

Five speakers and a subwoofer. Front left, center, front right, rear left, rear right. This is what you buy if you want the course to feel like it’s happening around you, not just in front of you.

What you get: True surround sound. The bird chirp comes from behind. The crowd noise wraps around you. The ball strike comes from the front. Most 5.1 systems include an AV receiver that handles inputs from your PC, console, TV, and streaming devices.

Where to put them:

The catch: Wired 5.1 systems require running speaker wire from the receiver to every speaker. If your room is already built, that means cable raceways, under-rug runs, or holes in the drywall. Wireless systems (Sony HT-A9, Nakamichi) avoid this but cost more.

Best for: Dual-purpose sim/theater rooms, large garages, and anyone who already has a home theater receiver.

What’s Overkill

Ceiling-mounted Atmos speakers in a room under 9 feet. The upward-firing channels bounce sound off the ceiling. If your ceiling is 8 feet, the bounce happens too fast to create a convincing overhead effect. You’re paying for a feature you can’t hear.

Floor-standing tower speakers. They take up floor space, they’re in the way of the swing, and a mis-hit ball will destroy a $2,000 tower. Wall-mount everything.

7.1 or 9.1 systems. In a standard single-car garage (12x20 feet), the room is too small for the extra channels to create separation. 5.1 is the practical maximum for any sim room under 300 square feet.

A $1,500 AV receiver. A $300 Yamaha or Denon receiver does everything you need. The extra spend gets you more HDMI ports, higher wattage you won’t use, and audiophile DACs that don’t matter when you’re hitting foam balls into a mesh screen.

Expensive “audiophile” speaker wire. 16-gauge OFC copper wire from Amazon costs $0.50 per foot. That’s all you need. The $10-per-foot audiophile cable is a scam in any room, but especially in a sim room where the background noise floor is 70 dB from the projector fan.

Connectivity: How to Hook It Up

The most common question I get is “how do I get sound from my simulator to the speakers?” Here’s the answer for every setup.

PC to soundbar: HDMI from graphics card to soundbar (HDMI ARC), then HDMI from soundbar to projector. Or optical cable from PC to soundbar. Or Bluetooth. HDMI is best – it carries the full signal and lets the soundbar decode Dolby.

PC to 2.1 powered speakers: 3.5mm headphone jack from PC to speaker input. Or USB from PC to speaker. Or Bluetooth. The 3.5mm connection is the simplest and most reliable.

PC to 5.1 system: HDMI from graphics card to AV receiver, then HDMI from receiver to projector. The receiver decodes the audio and sends video to the projector. This is the “standard” home theater wiring and it works perfectly for sims.

Launch monitor audio: Most launch monitors (GC3, BLP, Mevo+, R10) have a headphone jack or Bluetooth for audio feedback. You can run this into the AUX input on your soundbar or receiver for real-time impact sounds. Some sim software (GSPro, E6) handles this through the PC, so you don’t need a separate connection.

The simple rule: HDMI carries everything. If your sound system has HDMI input, use it. If not, optical or 3.5mm works. Bluetooth has latency – don’t use it for sim audio where timing matters.

Acoustic Treatment: The Other Half of the Equation

A good sound system in a bad room still sounds bad. Hard parallel walls (garage, basement, spare bedroom) create echo and reverb that turn your crisp audio into a muddy mess. Acoustic treatment fixes this.

Acoustic treatment is not soundproofing. Treatment makes the room sound better inside. Soundproofing keeps sound from leaving the room. They’re different problems with different solutions. This section covers treatment.

Where to Put Acoustic Panels

You don’t need to cover every wall. You need to cover the first reflection points – the spots where sound bounces off a wall and hits your ears.

Side walls at ear height: This is the primary reflection zone. Two to four 2-inch thick acoustic panels on each side wall, at the height of your ears when standing at the hitting position, make the biggest difference.

Rear wall behind the hitting position: The ball impact sound bounces off the rear wall and creates a doubling effect. Two panels on the rear wall, centered behind the hitting area, fix this.

Ceiling above the hitting zone: If your ceiling is hard (drywall, concrete), sound reflects straight down. A ceiling cloud (two to four panels mounted overhead) is the most impactful upgrade for reducing echo.

Behind the screen: The wall behind the impact screen is a noise trap. The ball hits the screen, the screen flexes, and the air pressure behind the screen creates a thud that echoes off the back wall. Acoustic panels or mass-loaded vinyl behind the screen reduce this significantly.

What Panels to Buy

Skip the cheap foam wedges. They look like soundproofing but they only absorb high frequencies – the low thud of a ball impact goes right through them. Buy 2-inch thick mineral wool or fiberglass panels with fabric wrap. These have an NRC rating of 0.85 or higher, meaning they absorb 85% of the sound energy that hits them.

This is enough to turn a garage from an echo chamber into a controlled acoustic space. If you’re in a carpeted room with furniture, you can skip the panels and just do the MLV behind the screen.

Soundproofing for Attached Garages

If your simulator room shares a wall with bedrooms or living spaces, acoustic treatment isn’t enough – you need soundproofing, which is a different beast.

The wall between the garage and the house is the main transmission path. Mass-loaded vinyl on this wall, covered by an extra layer of drywall with Green Glue damping compound, reduces impact noise by 12-15 dB. This is the single most effective soundproofing measure for attached garages.

The door is the second biggest leak. A solid-core door with a perimeter seal kit stops the noise that escapes around the edges. A hollow-core door passes sound like a paper towel. Replace it.

The floor transmits vibration in rooms above garages. A rubber underlayment under the hitting mat (UnderBlock or similar) decouples the impact from the structure. For a ground-floor concrete slab, floor treatment is optional.

Reality check: Even with full soundproofing, a driver swing at 100 mph hitting an impact screen produces a thud that’s audible in the room above. You can reduce it from “wake the kids” to “faint thump they’ll ignore after a week.” You can’t eliminate it without building a room-within-a-room, which costs $2,000-$5,000.

Speaker Placement: The Safety Rules

Simulator rooms are not normal rooms. You’re swinging a club at 80 mph near expensive electronics. Here are the rules that keep your speakers alive.

Rule 1: Nothing in the swing path. The wall-mounted speaker on the left – is it behind the backswing? If your driver can reach it, move it. A 45-inch driver has a 7-foot arc. Measure from the ball position. If the speaker is within 4 feet of the ball on either side, it’s in the danger zone.

Rule 2: Nothing in the ball flight zone. The 6 inches above and below the screen centerline, from the screen out to 10 feet, is where mis-hits go. A soundbar mounted below the screen is safe. A center channel mounted above the screen is not – a skyball will find it.

Rule 3: Wall-mount everything. Floor-standing speakers get knocked over when you step back from the hitting area. Bookshelf speakers on a shelf get knocked off. Wall-mount at ear height with a bracket rated for the speaker’s weight.

Rule 4: Keep the subwoofer on the floor, not elevated. Subs need to couple with the floor to produce bass. A sub on a shelf or table sounds thin and anemic. Put it on the floor, preferably on a 1-inch rubber pad to decouple vibration from the structure.

System Recommendations by Room Type

Small room / spare bedroom (10x12 feet, 8-foot ceiling): Soundbar. The room is too small for surround separation, and the short throw distance means the soundbar at 6 feet from the hitting position is perfectly adequate. $150-300. Samsung HW-Q600C ($250) or JBL Bar 2.1 Deep Bass ($180).

Garage, single-car (12x20 feet, 9-foot ceiling): 2.1 bookshelf speakers. The extra width and depth give stereo separation room to work. Klipsch R-41M pair with a Polk PSW10 subwoofer ($350 total) plus a $99 Fosi Audio BT20A amp. Total: $450 for genuinely good sound.

Garage, two-car / basement (20x20+ feet): 5.1 surround. The room is big enough to create a soundstage. Yamaha YHT-4950U ($350) or Logitech Z906 ($300) for budget. Sony HT-A9 ($500) for wireless flexibility.

Dual-purpose sim/theater room: 5.1 with a quality AV receiver. Denon AVR-S760H ($400) with a 5.1 speaker package from Klipsch or SVS. This is the only scenario where you need a dedicated receiver, because you’re switching between golf and movie sources.

What to Buy in Order of Impact

If you’re building piece by piece, here’s the priority order.

  1. A soundbar or powered speakers ($100-250). Anything is better than the projector speaker. Even a $100 Vizio soundbar transforms the experience. Do this first.

  2. Acoustic panels ($200-400). Before you upgrade to a 5.1 system, fix the room acoustics. A good sound system in a bad room is wasted money. Two panels on each side wall and a ceiling cloud. Do this second.

  3. Subwoofer upgrade ($150-300). If you started with a soundbar that has a weak sub, or a 2.1 system with a budget sub, upgrading the sub gives you the most audio improvement per dollar. The SVS SB-1000 Pro ($500) is the gold standard, but the Polk PSW10 ($150) is 80% of the performance for 30% of the cost.

  4. Upgrade to 5.1 ($300-500). Only if you have a room that can use it. If you’re in a 10x12 spare bedroom, stay at 2.1. If you’re in a 20-foot garage, go 5.1.

  5. Full soundproofing ($500-2,000). Only if you share walls with noise-sensitive people. Most builders don’t need this.

Common Mistakes

Mounting the soundbar above the screen. It’s tempting because the wall above the screen is usually empty. But the sound is coming from above the visual action, which is disorienting. Mount it below the screen.

Using Bluetooth for sim audio. Bluetooth has 100-200ms of latency. That means the ball strike sound arrives after you see the ball fly. It’s disorienting. Use HDMI, optical, or 3.5mm.

Buying a 7.1 system for a 12x20 room. The rear channels are 4 feet apart. There’s no separation. You paid for 2 extra speakers you can’t hear.

Putting the subwoofer in a corner. It makes the bass boomy and indistinct. You get a one-note thump instead of controlled bass. Move it 6-12 inches from the wall.

Forgetting the projector fan noise. A projector at 4,000 lumens produces 30-35 dB of fan noise. In a quiet room, that’s audible. If your sound system is too quiet, the fan noise competes. Don’t buy a 20-watt system for a garage – you need 50+ watts RMS to overcome ambient noise at comfortable listening levels.

Skipping acoustic treatment because “I’m just golfing.” The difference between an echoey garage and a treated room is dramatic. The audio sounds more detailed, the impact sounds punchier, and the room feels more like a simulator and less like a storage unit. It’s the most underrated upgrade in sim audio.

The Bottom Line

You don’t need a $2,000 audiophile system to make your sim sound great. You need a $200 soundbar or a $350 pair of bookshelf speakers, mounted correctly, in a room with basic acoustic treatment. The projector speaker is unusable. The PC speakers you already have are better than nothing. But the jump from “PC speakers on a desk” to “a soundbar mounted below the screen” is the single biggest improvement in immersion you can make for under $300.

The room acoustics matter as much as the speakers. Spend as much on acoustic panels as you do on the sound system. Eight panels and a $250 soundbar will sound better than a $1,000 system in an untreated garage.

If you’re building a dual-purpose sim/theater room, invest in 5.1 with a good receiver. If you’re just hitting balls, a 2.1 system with a subwoofer is all you need. Mount everything out of the swing path, run HDMI cables, and don’t skip the acoustic treatment.
