The Short Answer
Portmarnock on GSPro — review of Dublin's championship links. Course quality, access, and why it belongs in the Irish links conversation.
Portmarnock on GSPro is the course that deserves more attention from American sim golfers. Ranked 63rd on the Golf Digest World Top 100, Portmarnock sits on a peninsula north of Dublin and has hosted the Irish Open more times than any other venue. It is a flat, exposed, classic links that demands wind management, course strategy, and patience.
The GSPro community build captures the understated genius of Portmarnock, a course that looks easy on television and destroys scores in person.
The Portmarnock Experience
Portmarnock was designed by George Ross in 1894 and later refined by James Braid and others. The course sits on a low-lying peninsula in Dublin Bay, surrounded by water on three sides. The terrain is flat by links standards — there are no dramatic dune ridges or cliffside holes — but the wind exposure and the strategic routing make it one of the hardest courses in Ireland when the conditions are right.
The GSPro LiDAR build captures the defining feature of Portmarnock: the wind. The course is fully exposed to Dublin Bay, and the routing runs in every direction. A front nine drive that plays downwind at 290 yards becomes a 250-yard three-wood on the back nine when the hole turns into the wind. The GSPro version requires constant wind adjustment, which is the authentic Portmarnock experience.
The bunkering at Portmarnock is the primary defense. The course has over 100 bunkers, and they are positioned to catch the pushed or pulled shot rather than the well-struck one. The 14th hole, a 425-yard par 4 with a bunker complex on the inside of the dogleg, is the best example. The aggressive line over the bunkers leaves a short approach. The safe line left leaves a long approach over more bunkers. In GSPro, the risk-reward calculation is exactly as it should be.
Quality Assessment
The LiDAR data for Portmarnock captures the subtle elevation changes and the strategic bunkering accurately. The course is flat, but the internal contours are meaningful. The greens are large and undulating, with the 5th green being one of the most severely sloped in Irish links golf.
The rough at Portmarnock is one of the most punishing in Ireland. The wiry dune grasses catch offline shots and make recovery almost impossible. The GSPro version enforces this with heavy rough penalties, and playing from the rough around the greens requires explosion shots that are hard to control.

Where Portmarnock Fits in the Irish Links Collection
Portmarnock is the course you play after you have experienced the big names — Ballybunion, Lahinch, Old Head — and want to understand why Irish golfers love their subtler courses. It is not the most dramatic round of golf. It is the most honest, and it rewards the player who reads the wind, manages the course, and accepts par on the exposed holes.
