How the USGA Handicap System Works

1

Calculate Each Differential

(Score − Course Rating) × 113 ÷ Slope Rating. Each round gets a "differential" — a standardized number that accounts for course difficulty.

2

Take the Best 8

From your last 20 rounds, use your 8 lowest differentials. This ensures one bad round doesn't wreck your index, and your potential is what gets measured.

3

Multiply by 0.96

Average those 8 best differentials and multiply by 0.96. That's your Handicap Index. The 0.96 factor accounts for the fact that you'll play to your potential about 1 in 4 rounds.

Real Talk

This calculator uses the official USGA formula, but your real handicap comes from consistent posting of every round — not just your good ones. A launch monitor in your garage lets you log every shot, track every round, and watch that number drop. If you're serious about getting better, stop guessing and start measuring.
