GOLF+ MR Putting Beta: Real Putter, Real Ball
The GOLF+ Mixed Reality Putting beta is now live. You can download it today at store.golfplusvr.com. Full launch is scheduled for August 2026. Here’s what you need to know.
This is the biggest update to GOLF+ since the game launched on Quest. Mixed reality putting lets you use a real putter and a real golf ball while wearing a Meta Quest headset, with the virtual green overlaid on your real-world floor. No launch monitor, no simulator hardware, no PC — just a Quest headset, a putter, and a ball.
What’s in the Beta
The MR Putting beta includes:

40+ courses — Real course greens mapped to mixed reality

Real putter, real ball — No special equipment needed. Any standard putter and any standard golf ball work

No launch monitor required — The Quest headset’s cameras track the ball and putter using computer vision

2M+ existing GOLF+ players — The beta is available to all current GOLF+ users

Full launch in August — The beta runs through July, with the full release expected next month
Why This Matters
This is the first mainstream mixed reality golf product that doesn’t require a launch monitor. Previous MR golf attempts (the GOLF+ demo in 2024, various Viveport experiments) required either a TrackMan or a dedicated camera setup. GOLF+ MR Putting works with the Quest 3 and Quest 3S’s built-in cameras — no additional hardware purchase needed.
For the 2M+ people who already own GOLF+, this is a free upgrade that turns their living room floor into a practice green. For people who don’t own a golf simulator but have a Quest headset, this is the lowest-cost path to a golf simulation experience that exists today.

GOLF+ MR Putting is the cheapest option by a wide margin — if you already own a Quest headset. If you don’t, a Quest 3S is $299, which still makes the total cost ~$300, compared to $500+ for the next cheapest option.
What’s Still Missing
The beta is a beta. Expect:

Tracking isn’t perfect — the Quest’s cameras can lose the ball on fast strokes or in low light

Only putting — no chipping or full swing

The green physics are solid but not GSPro-level

You need decent indoor lighting for the cameras to track the ball
What This Means for Home Sim Golf
GOLF+ MR Putting is the closest thing we’ve seen to a mass-market sim golf product. 2M+ existing users means 2M+ potential putting practice converts. The full launch in August will tell us how many stick with it.
For the sim golf industry, this is a double-edged sword. More people practicing golf at home is good for the sport. But if MR putting is “good enough” for most golfers, it could eat into the market for $500+ dedicated putting trainers and $5,000+ putting systems.
For now, download the beta and try it. It’s free, it works, and it’s the most fun you’ll have with a Quest headset and a putter — which is a sentence I didn’t expect to write this year.
