Both numbers come from the same device. One is trustworthy. The other is a physics simulation.
Every launch monitor on the market is accurate at some things and inaccurate at others. The useful question is “which metrics does this device measure directly, and which ones does it calculate from partial data?” That distinction determines whether you’re practicing with real feedback or playing a video game where the random number generator occasionally leaks into your swing data.
The Reference Frame
Independent testing follows a standard methodology. Multiple units record the same shots simultaneously, and variance is measured on four key metrics: ball speed, launch angle, carry distance, and spin rate. The reference standard is almost always a TrackMan 4 ($24,995) — the dual-radar system used by the PGA Tour and every professional club-fitting facility.

Spin rate. This is where the gap opens up. Some budget units in MyGolfSpy’s testing showed 20-30% deviation from the reference indoors. Higher-end units stayed much tighter, with clustering in the low single digits.
Launch angle. Another mixed bag. Some models showed double-digit percentage variation indoors. The dispersion here was wide enough to meaningfully affect carry distance calculations.

Hybrid units (Rapsodo MLM2Pro, FlightScope Mevo Gen 2) combine both sensors. The camera handles impact measurement for spin. The radar tracks flight for trajectory. The MLM2Pro at $699 is the cheapest unit that directly measures spin, and independent testing consistently rates it as the best spin value under $1,000.
The core distinction is binary: either your unit measures spin from the ball’s rotation, or it estimates spin from the ball’s trajectory. Everything else flows from that.
The Price Tier Breakdown
Here’s what the data says about what you can trust at each price level.
Under $200: Shot Scope LM1, PRGR HS-130A
Ball speed: usable. Spin: unreliable indoors. Carry distance: 3-5% error. These are speed training tools. The Shot Scope LM1 is a legitimate device for its $199 price tag — it measures ball speed and launch angle well enough for club comparison and distance gapping. The spin number is a suggestion at best, especially indoors. If you’re using one of these for casual practice and don’t care about your wedge spin numbers, it’s fine. If you’re trying to dial in your 100-yard shot, you need a different tool.
$500-700: Garmin R10, Rapsodo MLM2PRO

The SkyTrak+ (now $1,495 on closeout) is a photometric camera system that measures spin directly. Foresight’s published data shows a 1.58% mean absolute error on carry distance compared to TrackMan. For a sub-$1,500 unit, that’s professional-grade. The caveat: SkyTrak+ requires a subscription for full features ($300-600/year), which changes the total cost of ownership math.
The Square Golf Omni ($1,599) uses four cameras and measures spin directly. It launched in July 2026, so independent long-term accuracy data is still thin. The Foresight GC3 ($5,999) is the gold standard for consumer launch monitors. Three-camera photometric system. Direct measurement of every metric that matters. No subscription. Foresight’s published accuracy is 1.58% mean absolute error on carry distance. The GC3 is accurate enough for professional club fitting, and it’s the unit most private fitters use when they can’t afford a TrackMan.
The Uneekor Eye Mini ($3,825-4,500) is a portable photometric unit with direct spin measurement. It requires a $199/year Pro Package for third-party software access, which adds $1,000 over five years.
The Diminishing Returns Curve
The biggest accuracy jump happens between $200 and $700. That jump is the shift from estimated spin to measured spin. Above $700, the improvements are on secondary metrics — club data precision, spin axis accuracy, consistency across a wider range of swing speeds.
Ball speed accuracy plateaus at about $500. Launch angle accuracy plateaus around $700. Spin accuracy plateaus at the point where you switch from radar estimation to camera measurement. If you’re a recreational golfer who wants to know your carry distances and see a ball flight on screen, the Garmin R10 with RCT balls is probably enough. If you’re spending more than $700 on a launch monitor and it doesn’t use a camera to measure spin, the money is going to software features and brand name, not accuracy. The Mevo Gen 2 at $1,299 is a great device, but it’s not more accurate on spin than the MLM2PRO at $699. The extra money buys you club data, more software options, and better outdoor performance. Those are real things. They’re just not accuracy things.
The Environmental Variables
Accuracy data from independent testing assumes ideal conditions. Real-world accuracy depends on three things that testing doesn’t account for:
Room depth. If your room is under 14 feet deep, radar units produce inconsistent data. Garmin recommends 21 feet for optimal R10 spin accuracy. The Mevo Gen 2 needs 16 feet minimum.
