Camera-based systems from Square (Omni), TruGolf (LaunchBox, Apogee), GolfIN (IDRA Pro), and Uneekor capture ball data without reflective dots, marked covers, or club stickers — they just need a clean line of sight and decent lighting. Even radar units like the Shot Scope LM1 ($199) work with any ball. The exception is the Rapsodo MLM2Pro, which still needs $40/dozen RPT balls plus a $99/year subscription for accurate indoor spin data. If you’re buying a launch monitor in 2026, the ones that don’t ask you to keep buying things are winning.
The launch monitor category is fighting a war against consumables right now. Prices are collapsing and feature lists keep growing, but the real change is quieter: the hardware is learning to work without the accessories.
A dozen Titleist RCT balls costs $70. A dozen Callaway RPT balls costs $40. Club sticker sheets run $10 to $20 and you replace them every few sessions. A Rapsodo MLM2Pro subscription is $99 a year — for the tier that actually gives you spin data, the thing you bought the device for in the first place.
Add it up over three years: $699 for the hardware, $300 for the subscription, $120 for balls. That’s $1,119 total before you’ve even opened the Rapsodo app for the first time after year three.
Now look at what Square Golf, TruGolf, GolfIN, and Uneekor are doing. Their launch monitors work with whatever ball you have in your bag. No dots, no marked covers, no club stickers, and no subscription gate between you and your own data.
The hardware is finally catching up to the obvious question: why does improving at golf require me to keep buying things?
How We Got Here: The Reflective Dot Tax
To understand why this matters, you have to understand the problem special balls exist to solve.
Radar launch monitors — the Garmin R10, the Mevo+, the Full Swing KIT — work by bouncing radio waves off the ball as it flies through the air. Doppler radar measures the speed and trajectory. But spin is a problem. Radar can’t actually see the ball rotating. It estimates spin rate from the ball’s flight curve, and it estimates spin axis from the curve’s tilt. It’s an educated guess.
Indoors, this gets worse. The ball only flies 8 to 15 feet before hitting a net. That’s not enough flight to estimate spin accurately. So radar manufacturers needed a trick: put a metallic layer inside the ball that makes it more reflective to radar, giving the sensor a stronger signal in that short window. That’s the Titleist RCT ball — a regular Pro V1 with a radar-reflective inner layer. It costs more. It works. But you have to buy it.
Camera-based systems have a different problem. High-speed cameras photograph the ball at impact and track the dot pattern on the cover to calculate spin. If the ball has a unique dot pattern — like the RPT balls the MLM2Pro uses — the camera can identify rotation precisely. If the ball is clean white, the camera has to track features like the logo or imperfections, which is harder in bad lighting.
The dirty secret: camera systems don’t actually need special balls for decent accuracy. The SkyTrak+, the GC3, and Uneekor’s entire lineup all work with any clean premium ball. The dot pattern helps, especially in low light, but it’s optional. The MLM2Pro is the one camera unit that effectively requires them for its headline feature.
Club stickers exist for the same reason. Radar units measure club speed (they track the club’s motion), but they can’t measure club face angle or impact location. A sticker on the clubface gives the camera a reference point. Some systems (Square Omni, GolfIN IDRA Pro) have algorithms that track the clubhead geometry itself — no sticker needed.
So the special-ball-and-sticker model is a workaround for hardware that wasn’t quite good enough. The question is: what happens when the hardware gets good enough to not need the workaround?
The Stickerless Wave, by Product
Almost every manufacturer figured this out at the same time, at dramatically different price points.
Square Golf Omni ($1,600). Four high-speed photometric cameras. Works indoors and outdoors. No marked balls needed for any of its 17 data metrics, including measured spin rate and spin axis. You put a ball down, hit it, and the cameras figure out the rest. It even turns the lack of ball dependency into a feature on the spec sheet — “no subscription, no special balls, no stickers.”
TruGolf LaunchBox ($2,299) and Apogee ($9,000). Both use camera and infrared tracking. The LaunchBox has zero “shot-to-show” delay — the ball is already flying on screen before it hits your net. Neither requires special balls or club stickers. The Apogee optionally uses stickers for dynamic loft and lie, but the core tracking works without them.
GolfIN IDRA Pro (announced, pricing TBD). This is the one that got the most buzz at the 2026 PGA Show for a reason. It promises measured spin and full club data with no stickers, no dots, no special balls. The pitch is aimed squarely at club fitters and instructors who are tired of managing consumables. If it delivers on the accuracy claims, it takes the stickerless model and pushes it into the professional tier.
Uneekor QED / EYE XO / EYE Mini. Uneekor’s entire lineup has never required special balls. Their ceiling-mounted units use downward-facing cameras that track ball and club from above. No stickers, no dots, no subscription. The EYE Mini, their portable camera unit, works the same way.
Shot Scope LM1 ($199). The cheapest launch monitor in the world, and it works with any ball. No dots, no stickers, no subscription. The trade-off is that spin rate is estimated, not measured — but it’s $199, and you don’t have to budget $40 a year in consumables on top of that.
And then there’s the Rapsodo MLM2Pro ($699). Still the best-selling camera-based budget launch monitor. Still requires RPT balls for accurate spin axis. Still requires a subscription for course play. Rapsodo is aware of this — their upcoming CLMPRO overhead unit is expected to address the stickerless gap. But the MLM2Pro, in 2026, is increasingly the odd one out in a category that’s moving on.
What This Means for Buyers
If you’re shopping for a launch monitor today, the consumable question belongs on your list. It shouldn’t be the only thing driving the decision, but it should be part of the cost calculation. A product that charges you $99 a year to unlock data you already paid for, plus $40 a dozen for balls you can’t reuse on the course, has a three-year total cost of ownership that’s higher than the sticker price suggests.
The Square Omni at $1,600 looks expensive next to the MLM2Pro at $699 until you run the three-year math: $1,600 for the Omni with zero recurring costs, vs $1,119 for the MLM2Pro with balls and subscription. The gap is $481. The Omni gives you 4 cameras, indoor+outdoor use, and measured spin without consumables. The MLM2Pro gives you portability and impact video, but you’re reordering RPT balls every few months.
That $481 gap is the consumable tax.
For the budget buyer, the Shot Scope LM1 at $199 with no consumables and no subscription is the cheapest total-cost path to launch monitor ownership by a wide margin. It doesn’t do everything — no face angle, no measured spin — but it doesn’t ask you to buy anything else either.
What This Means for the Industry
The stickerless shift is a competitive threat to anyone whose business model depends on consumable revenue.
Rapsodo’s MLM2Pro is the clearest example. The hardware is excellent. The data quality, especially spin axis with RPT balls, is best-in-class at the price. But the subscription-and-consumable model is an increasing liability when every competitor in the adjacent price bracket is eliminating both. Garmin could drop the R10 to $399 tomorrow and suddenly the MLM2Pro’s value proposition looks very different: similar price, no consumables, better software ecosystem. Blue Tees could integrate their app with enough third-party platforms to make the Rainmaker a genuine alternative without running everything through the phone.
The structural question for Rapsodo, and for any company still gating data behind consumables, is the same: when the hardware catches up, what’s the moat?
The answer for most camera companies seems to be “an increasingly irrelevant one.” The technology curve for commodity image sensors follows the same path it always has: last year’s premium feature is this year’s standard, and next year’s budget bin. The multi-camera photometric systems that power stickerless tracking today will cost half as much in two years.
The companies building towards that future — Square, TruGolf, GolfIN, Uneekor — are building products that don’t age as fast, because they don’t depend on an ecosystem of consumables to deliver their core value proposition. You buy the hardware, you get the data. That’s it.
The Bet
The bet you make when you buy a stickerless launch monitor is a bet that the hardware will keep being useful. The bet you make when you buy a consumable-dependent system is a bet that the company will keep selling you the thing you need to make it work. The second bet is worse. You depend on a company’s pricing decisions for the entire life of the product.
The Shot Scope LM1, Square Omni, TruGolf LaunchBox, GolfIN IDRA Pro, and Uneekor’s entire lineup all share a common philosophy: you bought the hardware. The data is yours. No further transactions required.
That approach is the direction the entire category is heading in 2026. The companies that don’t ask you to keep buying things are the ones winning the conversation. The companies still asking have some catching up to do.
