The first golf simulator I ever saw in a home was a friend’s setup in 2022. He had a SkyTrak original, a Spornia net, a cheap Amazon projector balanced on a stack of books, and a 2x4 frame holding up a bedsheet. The whole thing cost him about $2,500 and looked like a high school theater production.

He loved it. Hit balls every night. Got his handicap from 18 to 12 in one winter.

Eighteen months later, he tore the whole thing down and rebuilt it. This time: a proper enclosure from Carl’s Place, a Fiberbuilt mat, a refurbished GC2, a real short-throw projector on a ceiling mount, and a dedicated PC running GSPro. The second build cost him about $4,000. The first build had cost $2,500. So the total was $6,500 for what he ended up with.

He could have just built the second one first and saved the $2,500.

But he wouldn’t have known what to build.

The Pattern Is Everywhere

I’ve been tracking this. The pattern shows up across every forum, every Reddit thread, every Facebook group, every Discord server where people talk about home sims.

The first build is always wrong in the same ways:

You overbuy the launch monitor. You think you need a GC3 or a TrackMan because you read the spec sheets and the marketing told you that anything less is “estimated” or “inaccurate.” So you spend $6,000 on a launch monitor and $1,000 on everything else. Then you realize that a $699 Square Golf with an enclosure that doesn’t shake is a better experience than a $6,000 GC3 with a net that wobbles.

You underbuy the enclosure. The first build uses a cheap net or a single-layer screen because you’re trying to stay under budget. Then you hit one thin shot that punches through the net and you realize your drywall is part of the impact system. The second build uses a proper enclosure with a quality screen and foam padding.

You ignore the room. The first build assumes any room will work. You don’t think about lighting, ceiling height, floor surface, or sound. The second build starts with a room plan and works backward to the equipment.

You buy the wrong software. The first build comes with whatever software the LM manufacturer bundles. The second build has GSPro and the first thing you do is cancel the manufacturer’s subscription.

You skip the PC. The first build tries to run simulator software on a laptop or a gaming console. The second build has a dedicated PC with a proper GPU, and you wonder why you ever tried to do it the other way.

Every single one of these is a first-build mistake. And every single one of them gets fixed in the second build.

Why the First Build Is Always Wrong

There’s a reason this pattern is so consistent. The industry has structured itself to extract maximum value from first-time buyers by exploiting the information gap.

The launch monitor companies know that a first-time buyer doesn’t know what matters. So they price their products to capture the “I want the best” buyer who doesn’t know what “best” actually means. The enclosure companies know that a first-time buyer doesn’t understand impact physics. So they sell cheap nets that barely work. The software companies know that a first-time buyer will pay for a subscription before they understand what GSPro offers.

Markets develop information asymmetry when the product is complex and the buyer is inexperienced. The same thing happens with home theaters, with photography equipment, with fly fishing gear, with any hobby that has a steep learning curve and a wide range of quality. You buy the wrong thing first, learn why it’s wrong, and buy the right thing second.

But the sim golf industry has a higher “wrong tax” than most hobbies because the equipment is expensive and the setup is complicated. A first-time buyer who spends $3,000 on a launch monitor, $500 on a net, $200 on a mat, and $300 on software has spent $4,000 on a setup that will be rebuilt within 18 months. The second setup will cost $3,500 and be vastly better, but the total cost of ownership is $7,500.

The buyer who skips straight to the second build spends $3,500 and gets the same result.

Can You Skip the First Build?

The honest answer is: yes, but it requires you to do something that feels uncomfortable.

You have to accept that your first build is not your final build. You’re going to make mistakes. You’re going to learn what you actually value. The question is whether you can minimize the cost of those mistakes by buying the right things the first time, even if they’re not the things you think you want right now.

The specific things that first-time buyers consistently mis-prioritize, in order:

  1. Room prep. The room is the most important component. It’s also the least exciting. You can’t buy a room in a box. You have to measure, plan, and build. This is the step that first-time buyers skip, and it’s the one that matters most.

  2. Enclosure and screen. The impact surface is the second most important component. A $2,000 enclosure with a $500 LM is a better experience than a $500 net with a $2,000 LM. The ball has to stop. The screen has to look good. The frame has to be solid. Everything else is secondary.

  3. Software. GSPro is the standard for a reason. If your launch monitor doesn’t support it, or requires a subscription to use it, factor that into the total cost. The software you use every session matters more than the hardware spec sheet.

  4. Launch monitor. The device is the fourth most important component. The market has converged to the point where any launch monitor over $500 is accurate enough for improvement. The differences between a $699 Square and a $3,000 Eye Mini are real but marginal for most users. The differences between a $199 net and a $1,000 enclosure are not marginal.

  5. Mat. A good mat is important for injury prevention. A bad mat will hurt your joints and ruin your swing. But the range of quality is narrower than the range of price. The $200 mat is fine. The $800 mat is better. The difference matters less than the difference between a good screen and a bad one.

  6. Projector. If you’re using a screen, the projector matters. But you can also skip the projector entirely and use a monitor or TV. Most first-time buyers spend too much on a projector and too little on an enclosure.

What the Industry Knows That You Don’t

The reason the industry doesn’t talk about the second-build pattern is that it’s bad for business. Manufacturers want you to think that your first purchase is your only purchase. They want you to believe that the spec sheet is the only thing that matters, and that spending more on the launch monitor is always the right call.

But the data from the second-build pattern tells a different story. The buyers who spend the most on their first build are not the happiest. The buyers who spend the most on their second build are.

The happiest sim owners I’ve talked to have one thing in common: they bought a good enclosure first, a good screen second, and a good launch monitor third. They treated the launch monitor as the last component, not the first. They built their setup around the room, not around the device.

The unhappiest sim owners bought a $3,000+ launch monitor and a $200 net, set it up in a room that was too small, and then wondered why the experience wasn’t as good as they expected. They spent more money and got less enjoyment.

The Economics of Skipping

What This Means for the Industry

The second-build pattern is a feature of the market, not a bug. It exists because the industry is young and the information asymmetry is wide. As the market matures, the pattern will fade. Buyers will get better information. Manufacturers will adjust their pricing. The “first build” will become less of a learning experience and more of a straightforward purchase.

But right now, in 2026, the second-build pattern is the most reliable predictor of sim owner satisfaction. The people who are happy with their setups are almost always on their second build. The people who are frustrated are almost always on their first.

If you’re building your first sim, the best advice I can give you is: plan for the second build. Buy the things that won’t change — the room prep, the enclosure, the screen, the mat — and be flexible on the things that will. Your launch monitor preferences will change. Your software preferences will change. Your space requirements will change. But a good room with a good enclosure is a platform that supports any future upgrade.

Build the platform first. The device is the last piece, not the first.
