RCT Golf Balls: Do You Actually Need Them?

RCT Golf Balls: Do You Actually Need Them

There are two kinds of people reading this article.

The first kind owns a launch monitor. You’ve seen RCT balls in the Titleist catalog, read the marketing claims about “99% spin capture accuracy,” and wondered if the $70/dozen price tag is worth it for your home setup.

The second kind is wondering what RCT even stands for, let alone whether you need them.

Both questions lead to the same answer, but only after you name the launch monitor sitting next to your mat. The question “are RCT balls worth it?” can’t be answered until you know whether you own a radar unit or a camera unit. Those two technologies handle RCT balls completely differently.


What RCT Actually Is

RCT stands for Radar Capture Technology. It’s a Titleist Pro V1 (or Pro V1x, or Pro V1x Left Dash) that has a special radar-reflective marker printed onto the casing layer of the ball, underneath the final urethane cover. The marker acts like a permanent version of the metallic dot stickers that radar launch monitor manufacturers have been shipping with their units for years.

The technology was developed over three years in collaboration between Titleist and TrackMan. The problem they were solving is specific to radar-based launch monitors in indoor environments.

Radar launch monitors track the ball by bouncing radio waves off it and measuring how the frequency shifts as the ball moves. Outdoors, where the ball flies 200+ yards, the radar gets plenty of data to calculate spin accurately. Indoors, where the ball hits a screen after 8-15 feet, the radar gets a fraction of a second of data and has to estimate the rest.

A metallic sticker or reflective marker gives the radar a single high-contrast point to track, making it much easier to measure rotation from limited flight data. Without it, the radar is trying to track spin from the subtle changes in the signal bouncing off a plain white ball. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn’t. The inconsistency is maddening.

RCT balls solve this by putting the reflective marker inside the ball, under the cover, where it can’t fall off, get scuffed, or need to be oriented a specific way. You pull the ball out of the sleeve, put it on the tee, and hit. That’s it.


Who Benefits (And Who Doesn’t)

Most articles about RCT balls bury this detail. Titleist certainly doesn’t put it in bold on the product page.

RCT balls ONLY improve accuracy for radar-based launch monitors.

If your launch monitor uses high-speed cameras (photometric technology) to track the ball, the reflective marker inside an RCT ball does absolutely nothing for you. Camera systems track the ball’s dimples directly. They don’t need radar reflectivity. They need visual markings. An RCT ball looks identical to a regular Pro V1 from the outside, so a camera system reads it the same way.

Some rough math: about half the launch monitors sold in the consumer market today use radar. The other half use cameras. Half of you reading this have been wondering about a product that was never designed to help you.


The Real-World Difference

Carl’s Place, the enclosure company, actually tested RCT balls head-to-head against regular balls and metallic stickers. Using a FlightScope Mevo+, they found:

On a Garmin R10, the RCT ball made a bigger difference. The R10 struggled to even read the ball before a firmware update, and after the update, RCT balls provided noticeably more consistent spin data than unmarked balls.

TrackMan’s own testing shows a 99% spin capture rate with RCT balls indoors, compared to roughly 85-90% with a properly applied sticker and significantly worse without any marking at all.

For the home golfer, the practical difference is straightforward. If you own a radar-based launch monitor and you care about accurate spin numbers — for club gapping, shot shaping practice, or dialing in wedge distances — RCT balls will give you more reliable data. If you’re just playing virtual rounds for fun, you won’t notice the difference between 4,000 RPM and 4,200 RPM.


RCT vs. RPT: The Confusing Part

Rapsodo’s MLM2PRO launch monitor uses a hybrid system: a camera (Impact Vision) combined with radar. Because the camera tracks the ball optically, it needs visual markings on the ball, not radar-reflective ones.

Rapsodo sells RPT (Rapsodo Precision Technology) balls — also made by Titleist as Pro V1s — that have a unique 27-point printed pattern on the surface for the camera to track. These are NOT the same as RCT balls.

If you own an MLM2PRO, you do NOT want RCT balls. You want RPT balls. They cost the same ($70/dozen) and they do different things. Using RCT balls with an MLM2PRO will not give you measured spin. Using RPT balls with a Garmin R10 will not help either.


Alternatives to RCT Balls

RCT balls are $70 per dozen. You’ll lose fewer of them in a simulator than on a golf course, but you’ll still wear them out. If you hit 100 balls a session, a dozen won’t last forever.

Here are the alternatives, ranked by cost and effort:

Metallic dot stickers (free with your LM, ~$10 for refills): This is what RCT balls are replacing. A small metallic sticker applied to a regular ball. The downsides: stickers fall off, they need to be oriented correctly, they wear out after repeated impacts, and they’re a pain to apply. But the accuracy improvement is roughly the same as RCT balls. If you’re on a budget, use the stickers.

Rapsodo Ball Dots (~$15 for 200): Rapsodo sells sheets of dot stickers for the MLM2PRO. Same concept as metallic stickers but designed for the camera system. They work, they’re cheap, they’re annoying to apply.

DIY sharpie markings ($0): There are 3D-printed templates you can buy or make that let you draw RPT-style patterns on regular balls with a sharpie. They work for camera-based systems. They don’t work for radar. They also leave marks on your impact screen, which is not ideal.

Regular balls with no markings ($0): Works fine for camera-based systems (they track dimples). Works poorly for radar-based systems indoors (spin will be estimated, not measured).


The Verdict

If you own a camera-based launch monitor, stop reading. You do not need RCT balls. Go buy regular Pro V1s and save $70.

If you own a radar-based launch monitor and care about accurate spin data, RCT balls are the best solution. They’re more convenient than stickers, more reliable than unmarked balls, and they work with zero setup. The $70/dozen price is expensive for what it is, but simulator balls last longer than range balls, so the actual cost per session is lower than it looks.

If you own a radar-based launch monitor and you’re not sure you care about spin accuracy, try the metallic stickers first. They give you roughly the same accuracy improvement. If you hate dealing with stickers, buy the RCT balls. The convenience premium is real — there’s something nice about just grabbing a ball and hitting without checking the orientation.

If you own an MLM2PRO, buy RPT balls, not RCT balls. They are not the same thing. Do not make this mistake.

The indoor golf market is full of products that promise better data. Most of them deliver marginal improvements for premium prices. RCT balls are different — they solve a real problem for the people who need them. The catch is that half of you don’t need them at all, and nobody selling them is going to tell you that.

The honest answer to “do I need RCT balls?” depends on what’s sitting next to your hitting mat. Check your launch monitor. If it’s a camera system, save your money. If it’s radar, decide whether convenience is worth $70 to you.
