RCT vs RPT Golf Balls: What They Do for Your Simulator
If you own a radar-based launch monitor like a Garmin R10, a FlightScope Mevo+, or a TrackMan, the spin numbers you see on your indoor shots are probably estimates. Not measurements. The difference between those two words is roughly $50 a dozen, and it’s the reason RCT and RPT balls exist.

The Indoor Spin Problem
Radar-based launch monitors work by bouncing radio waves off a golf ball and reading the return signal. Outdoors, this works great. The ball flies 200 yards, the radar tracks it the whole way, and it has plenty of time to calculate spin rate from the subtle wobble in the return signal.
Indoors, the ball travels about 10 feet before hitting a screen. That’s not enough flight time for the radar to get a clean spin read. So the monitor does what any reasonable piece of software would do: it guesses. It uses ball speed, launch angle, and club path data to estimate what your spin rate probably was, based on a model of how golf balls behave.
Sometimes that estimate is close. Sometimes it’s wildly wrong. Either way, you’re training with data that isn’t real.
This is the problem that RCT and RPT balls solve. They solve it in different ways, for different types of launch monitors, and at different price points. Understanding the difference is the difference between knowing your numbers and trusting your numbers.
RCT: Radar Capture Technology
RCT stands for Radar Capture Technology, and it was developed by Titleist in partnership with TrackMan. The idea is simple: embed a radar-reflective pattern inside the golf ball, under the urethane cover, so the radar signal bounces back with a clear, unambiguous picture of the ball’s rotation.
Think about riding a bike at night. A normal bike is hard to see. A bike with reflective strips on the wheels is easy to see — the headlights catch the reflectors and you can track the wheel’s rotation perfectly. RCT balls are the reflective strips. The internal pattern gives the radar a clear target to lock onto, so it can measure spin directly instead of estimating it.
Titleist claims the accuracy jumps to over 99% with RCT balls. Garmin says using RCT balls with the R10 improves spin rate accuracy by 30 times and carry distance accuracy by 50%. Those are marketing numbers, sure, but the underlying physics is real. A radar with a clean signal reads better than a radar guessing.
Which launch monitors work with RCT? Titleist has validated the following for indoor use with RCT balls:

Which launch monitors do NOT benefit from RCT? Any camera-based system. SkyTrak+, Bushnell Launch Pro, Foresight GC3/GCQuad, Uneekor Eye Mini — these use cameras to track the ball optically. They don’t rely on radar for spin data, so the reflective technology in RCT balls does nothing for them.
RCT balls cost about $55-60 a dozen. They’re available in Pro V1, Pro V1x, Pro V1x Left Dash, and AVX variants. They play exactly like the standard versions because they are the standard versions — just with a reflective layer inside. You can use them outdoors. They just won’t do anything special out there.
RPT: Rapsodo Precision Technology
RPT stands for Rapsodo Precision Technology, and it’s exclusive to the Rapsodo MLM2PRO. The MLM2PRO is a hybrid device — it uses radar for ball speed and launch angle, but it uses a high-speed camera (240 fps) to capture spin data. The camera looks for a specific pattern of 27 dots printed on the ball’s surface.
This is a fundamentally different approach from RCT. RCT solves the radar problem by making the ball more reflective to radar. RPT solves the camera problem by making the ball visually trackable. The camera can see the dots rotating and calculate spin rate and spin axis from how fast the pattern moves.
RPT balls are available in Callaway Chrome Soft X (and now Chrome Tour), Callaway Chrome Soft X LS, and as of 2025, Titleist Pro V1 and Pro V1x. The Pro V1 RPT balls are sold exclusively through Rapsodo, not through normal Titleist channels. They cost about $55-70 a dozen depending on the model.
Rapsodo says the MLM2PRO with RPT balls is accurate to within 50 RPM and 0.75 degrees of spin axis compared to a GCQuad — which is the gold standard for camera-based spin measurement. That’s good enough for serious practice and club fitting.
The catch: You need RPT balls to get spin data from the MLM2PRO at all. Without them, the device will give you ball speed, launch angle, and carry distance, but spin rate and spin axis will show as zeros. The device literally will not measure spin without the pattern. RCT balls, by contrast, will improve accuracy on radar monitors but the monitors still work without them.
The Big Difference: Radar vs. Camera
This is the key distinction that most articles get wrong. RCT and RPT solve the same problem — indoor spin measurement — but they work with completely different technologies.

That last row is worth talking about.
The DIY Options
RPT patterns can be replicated. There are 3D-printable templates you can buy on Etsy for $10 that let you draw the 27-dot pattern on any golf ball with a Sharpie. It works. The camera sees the dots and calculates spin the same way. The downside is that the marker wears off after a few shots, and if you’re hitting into a screen instead of a net, the marker can leave black marks on your impact screen.
Rapsodo also sells RPT Ball Dots — stickers that adhere to any ball and replicate the pattern. They’re cheaper than buying RPT balls and work with any brand you prefer.
RCT technology, on the other hand, cannot be replicated. The reflective layer is embedded during manufacturing. You can’t draw it on. You can’t stick it on. You either buy the Titleist balls or you get estimated spin. That’s the trade-off for the convenience of never having to apply stickers.
The Verdict
If you own a radar-based launch monitor (R10, Mevo+, TrackMan, Full Swing KIT): RCT balls are worth buying if you care about accurate spin data. They’re not necessary for casual practice — the estimated spin numbers are directionally correct and fine for most people. But if you’re working on a specific swing change, comparing equipment, or taking your practice seriously, the $55 is cheap insurance against training with bad data. They’re not cheap. But bad data isn’t cheap either.
