Do You Actually Need RCT Balls for Your Simulator
Do you need RCT balls for your golf simulator? Only if you own a radar-based launch monitor (TrackMan, Garmin R10, FlightScope Mevo+, Full Swing KIT). Camera-based systems like Foresight GC3, SkyTrak+, and Uneekor don’t need them. RCT balls improve indoor spin measurement accuracy from ~60-70% to over 99% on radar systems. The $70 Question
Let me save you the clickbait: if you own a camera-based launch monitor — Foresight GC3, GCQuad, SkyTrak+, Bushnell Launch Pro, Uneekor Eye Mini, Garmin R50 — you do not need RCT balls. If you own a radar-based launch monitor — TrackMan 4, Garmin R10, FlightScope Mevo+, Full Swing KIT — you might. And the answer is more interesting than a simple yes or no.
The Problem RCT Balls Solve
Here’s what happens when you hit a golf ball indoors with a radar launch monitor:
The ball flies 10-15 feet and hits a screen. That’s not enough flight for the radar to see a full rotation. Without seeing a full rotation, the system can’t directly measure spin. It estimates it based on launch angle, ball speed, and club data. The estimate is in the ballpark, but it’s not the same as a measurement.
MyGolfSpy tested this: standard balls on TrackMan indoors capture spin about 60-70% of the time. The remaining 30-40% are estimates, flagged in the software as “italics” — the system’s way of saying “we’re guessing.”
The old solution was a metallic dot sticker. You’d place a small reflective sticker on the ball, orient it toward the radar, and hope it stayed on for more than 3 shots. It worked, but it was a pain. The sticker had to be facing the radar. It fell off. It broke your rhythm.
Titleist and TrackMan spent two years developing a better solution. The result is RCT — Radar Capture Technology. They print a reflective marker directly onto the casing layer of a Pro V1, then cover it with the urethane outer shell. The marker is protected from impact, doesn’t need to face a specific direction, and doesn’t require stickers. You just rake the ball over and hit.
Does It Actually Work?
The data from Titleist’s testing: 99% spin capture accuracy on TrackMan. That’s measured spin, not estimated. In real terms, it means the difference between knowing your 7-iron carries 165 yards with 6,000 RPM of spin, and guessing it carries somewhere between 160 and 170 with spin that might be 5,500 or might be 6,500.
Carl’s Place did independent testing on a Mevo+ with an Uneekor EYE XO as reference. The results:
- Regular Pro V1, no sticker: 6.46% spin error
- Regular Pro V1 with metallic dot sticker: 0.24% spin error
- Pro V1 RCT: 2.54% spin error
The sticker was actually the most accurate option. But the RCT ball was close behind without any of the hassle. And on the Garmin R10 — which had firmware issues with early RCT models — the updated firmware plus RCT balls produced carry distance within 3.4 yards of the reference and spin within 186 RPM. That’s a huge improvement over the R10’s notoriously shaky indoor spin data.
The Fine Print
RCT is not a universal solution. Here’s what you need to know:
It only works with radar-based LMs. Titleist’s validated list is: TrackMan 4, Garmin R10, Full Swing KIT, FlightScope X3, FlightScope Mevo+. If your LM isn’t on this list and uses radar, it might still work, but it hasn’t been tested.
It doesn’t fix spin axis. RCT improves backspin measurement. It doesn’t help with spin axis (side spin). That’s a separate limitation of radar-based systems indoors. If you’re a radar user and you want accurate shot shape data, you’re still making a trade-off.
The firmware has to be current. Garmin R10 owners learned this the hard way. Early RCT balls didn’t work with the R10 until a firmware update. If your LM is a few years old and hasn’t been updated, RCT might not help.
It costs $70/dozen. That’s $5.83 per ball. For indoor use, you won’t lose them, but you’ll wear them out faster than you’d expect because you’re hitting into a screen that scuffs the cover. A dozen RCT balls lasts about 3-4 months of regular practice.
The Alternatives
Metallic Dot Stickers (Free): Your Mevo+ came with a sheet of these. They’re ugly, they fall off, and you have to orient them. But they produce the most accurate spin data of any option. If you’re patient and don’t mind the hassle, this is the best value.
TaylorMade TRK-R ($65/dozen): TaylorMade’s answer to RCT. Based on the TP5 and TP5x. Uses liquid silver embedded in the cover instead of Titleist’s printed marker. Slightly cheaper, works with TrackMan and Foresight systems. Less testing history, but the technology is sound.
Callaway Chrome Tour RPT: These are specifically designed for the Rapsodo MLM2Pro. They use a printed dot pattern that the MLM2Pro’s Impact Vision camera reads. Patterned Balls (Free-ish): Some premium balls have enough visual pattern that a radar system can track them. The TaylorMade TP5x pix pattern, for example, has been shown to improve spin capture on some systems. It’s not as reliable as RCT, but it’s better than a plain white ball.
The Verdict
If you own a camera-based LM, stop reading. Use whatever ball you want. Your system doesn’t care.
If you own a radar-based LM and you’re serious about your practice data, buy RCT balls. Get the Pro V1 or Pro V1x in whatever you normally play. The $70/dozen hurts once, then you forget about it. The alternative is guessing whether your spin numbers are real or estimated, and that uncertainty undermines everything else you’re doing in the sim.
If you own a radar-based LM and you’re a casual player who just wants to hit balls and have fun, use the stickers. They’re free, and they’re actually more accurate than RCT balls in controlled testing. The inconvenience is real, but the price is right.
If you own a radar-based LM and you’re somewhere in the middle, get one sleeve of RCT balls. Compare the data to your sticker setup. If you can’t tell the difference, stick with stickers. If you can, you’ll know the $70 is worth it.
The technology is solving a real problem. The question is how much you care about the answer.
