Your R10 or R50 captures every sim session — club speed, ball speed, carry distance, smash factor. Both feed into the Garmin Golf app, but they live in separate tabs. There’s no unified view that says “your sim practice improved your on-course approach shots by 4 yards.” The data bridge exists. The destination doesn’t.


You hit balls in your garage three nights a week. Your Garmin R10 records every swing — club speed, ball speed, carry distance, smash factor. Six months of data. Thousands of shots. You’re getting faster. You know because the numbers tell you.

On Saturday mornings, you play 18 with your buddies. Your Garmin Approach S70 sits on your wrist, tracking every shot, recording distances, calculating your handicap. You’re scoring better. You know because the numbers tell you.

Here’s the question nobody’s asking: does your sim practice have anything to do with your on-course improvement?

You’d think there’d be a straight line. Sim practice makes you hit better shots. Better shots make you score lower. But the data to prove it doesn’t exist in one place. Your R10 data lives in one tab of the Garmin Golf app. Your S70 round data lives in another tab. You can see both, but you can’t connect them. Sim side (practice): The Garmin R10 ($550) and R50 ($800-900) are the entry and mid-tier launch monitors. The R10 measures 11 data points. The R50 adds direct spin measurement, better accuracy, and Home Tee Hero built-in. Both feed into the Garmin Golf app, where you can review sessions, track progress, and compare shots over time.

The app (where they meet): The Garmin Golf app has tabs. One for your rounds. One for your practice sessions. One for your handicap. They’re all in the same app, but they don’t talk to each other. You can see your sim session from Tuesday and your round from Saturday, but the app won’t tell you that your sim practice is the reason you hit 4 more fairways this week than last month.

This is the part that drives me crazy. Garmin has the most complete vertical stack in golf — watches, launch monitors, the app, and now the Golf Premium API that lets third parties access the data. They have every piece of the puzzle. They just haven’t put the puzzle together.

Who’s Building the Bridge

A few companies are working on this from different angles.

Garmin Golf Premium API (launched 2026): This is the most important development in this space. Garmin opened an API that lets third-party apps access golf performance data from Garmin devices — scorecard, on-course data, range session data. The first integration is with Clippd, a data-driven performance platform that gives you strokes-gained analysis, player quality metrics, and personalized practice plans.

This is the infrastructure. The API exists. The data is accessible. But so far, it only gives third parties access to Garmin watch data — not simulator data. clubdata.io: This is a service that takes your GSPro, TrackMan, or FSXPro export files and turns them into a personalized yardage book on your phone. You upload your simulator shot data, and it figures out your exact carry distances by club, including confidence intervals and rollout predictions. It’s brilliant for the “what does my sim data mean for the course” question, but it’s a one-way bridge — sim data to phone, not watch data to sim data.

Tangent: This is an Apple Watch app that tracks on-course performance with automatic shot detection, strokes gained, and personalized caddie recommendations. It’s the best example of what a unified golf data platform should look like — but it only works with Apple Watch, not Garmin, and it doesn’t import sim data.

What’s Missing

The thing that doesn’t exist yet is the unified dashboard. The single view that says:

“Your last 12 sim sessions show your 7-iron carry distance increased from 155 to 162 yards. Your last 5 rounds show your approach shots from 150-170 yards are hitting the green 12% more often. Your sim practice is working. Keep going.”

That’s the feedback loop. That’s the killer feature. And nobody’s built it yet.

A few reasons why:

Data format differences. Sim data is shot-by-shot with club data, ball data, and environmental conditions. Watch data is GPS positions, distances, and scores. They’re measuring different things in different units at different times. Merging them requires mapping each shot type to its real-world equivalent, which is harder than it sounds.

Ecosystem lock-in. Garmin wants you in the Garmin app. Apple wants you on Apple Watch. GSPro wants you on your PC. The data lives in silos because each company wants to own the relationship with you. Opening the data to each other is a business decision, not a technical one.

No standard format. There’s no universal golf data format. TrackMan exports are different from GSPro exports, which are different from Garmin exports. The companies that want to build bridges are spending more time on format conversion than on actual features.

Why This Matters for Home Golf

The entire premise of home golf is that practicing at home makes you better on the course. Every simulator ad, every launch monitor review, every buying guide — they all sell you on the same promise: hit balls in your garage, shoot lower scores on the weekend.

But without a feedback loop, it’s a faith-based proposition. You hope the practice is working. You feel like it’s working. But you don’t have the data to prove it.

The golfer who can see the direct line from Tuesday night’s sim session to Saturday morning’s score is a golfer who practices more, practices smarter, and buys more sim equipment. The feedback loop is the engine that drives the entire home golf market. It’s the thing that turns a $550 R10 purchase into a $2,000 enclosure, a $2,500 SkyTrak+, and a $5,000 full build.

The companies that build this bridge first will own the home golf analytics market. It could be Garmin, if they connect their own data. It could be a startup like clubdata.io or Tangent, if they expand to cover both sides. It could be GSPro, if they add a watch companion app. The winner gets the data, and the data is the moat.

What I’d Build

If I were building this tomorrow, here’s what it would look like:

An app that syncs with your Garmin watch for on-course data and your R10/R50 or GSPro for sim data. It shows you a single dashboard: practice trends on the left, round results on the right, and a correlation line in the middle that tells you what’s working. It emails you after every round: “Your sim practice is paying off” or “Your wedge game needs work — hit 20 more partial shots this week.”

The technology exists. The API exists. The hardware exists. What’s missing is someone who cares enough to put it together.

Garmin has the best position to do this because they own both the watch and the launch monitor. They have the full stack. They just need to build the unified dashboard. The Garmin Golf app already has the data — it just needs a view that connects the tabs.
