Your basement has the lowest ceiling in the house. Ducts hanging where your backswing wants to go. A support column dead center that you cannot move. Maybe a sump pump in the corner.

Because the things that make basements annoying for living (low ceilings, weird shapes, moisture) don’t matter much for a sim. And the things that make basements great for sims (climate control, sound isolation, permanent setup, no car shuffle) are things garages can’t touch.
Step 1: Measure Your Basement (Seriously, Start Here)
The tape measure is your most important tool. Not the launch monitor. Not the screen. The $5 tape measure from the junk drawer.
Ceiling height. This is the #1 question. You need:
- 8 feet for irons and wedges — safe for most male golfers up to about 6’2“
- 9 feet for driver — full unrestricted swing with every club

The ceiling measurement on your basement listing is the raw floor-to-joist number. Your actual hitting ceiling is lower. HVAC ducts drop 6-12 inches. Pipes drop below joists. Light fixtures hang. You need to measure the LOWEST point in the room, not the highest.

Room depth. You need 10 feet minimum from ball to screen. More is better — 12-14 feet gives you breathing room. The launch monitor goes next to the ball (camera units) so you don’t need the 14-16 feet of ball flight that radar requires.
Room width. Eight feet minimum for a single golfer. Ten feet if you want room for two people standing side by side. Support columns eat into this — measure around them, not past them.
The support column problem. This is the most common basement issue. A steel column dead center of your ideal hitting zone. You have three options:
- Build around it — offset your hitting zone so the column is to the side. Most basements have the column off-center anyway.
- Build in front of it — put the screen between you and the column so it’s behind the screen.
- Work with a narrower room — a 10-foot wide room with a column at 5 feet effectively gives you two 5-foot bays. Build one bay.
Nobody successfully removes a support column on a budget. Don’t try.

Before you build anything: test your basement for moisture. Tape a 2x2 foot sheet of plastic to the floor for 48 hours. If there’s condensation on the underside, you have a moisture problem that needs fixing before any electronics go in.
Solutions range from cheap (a dehumidifier, $150) to moderate (a vapor barrier under the mat, $50 in materials) to expensive (a perimeter drainage system, $2,000+). Most basement sims just need the dehumidifier. Run it during your sessions and keep it running during humid months.

Lighting
