Golf Simulator Space Requirements: How Much Room Do You Need?
You have more space than you think.
I’ve heard this from probably a hundred guys now. Almost all of them thought they didn’t have room. Almost all of them were wrong.
You’re picturing a commercial simulator bay — the kind at Golf Galaxy with 15-foot ceilings and a giant enclosure. You assume you need that. So you look at your garage, your basement, your spare room, and you rule it out.
But the real numbers — the ones that work in actual houses where actual guys are swinging drivers right now — are way smaller than you’d expect.
Minimum vs. Recommended Space
The math is almost offensive in its simplicity:

A standard two-car garage is 20 feet deep with 9-to-10-foot ceilings. You have double the depth you need. You could build a full simulator setup, park your car, and still have room for the storage bins your wife insists you keep.

Ceiling Height: The Dealbreaker
Ceiling height is the one that stops most people cold. It’s also the one you’re most likely wrong about.
- A 6’0“ guy swinging a driver needs about 7.5 to 8 feet from floor to the top of his swing arc.
- Add 6 inches for comfort — you need 8.5 feet minimum.
- If you’re 6’2“ or taller with an aggressive swing, budget 9 to 10 feet.

“But my garage has 8-foot ceilings.”
Maybe. Let’s check.
Most garages have 8-to-10-foot ceilings. If you’ve got 9 feet, you’re golden (check out our dedicated 9-foot ceiling setup guide for a full walkthrough). If you’ve got 8 feet, you can still make it work — just know your driver swing will have a governor on it.
- They swing irons and wedges for full reps. Your 7-iron needs way less headroom than your driver.
- They choke down on the driver and take a controlled swing. You’re not losing 40 yards. You’re losing 10.
- They check the actual ceiling height — not the one they guessed — because garages with tray ceilings or vaulted sections often have 9 feet where it matters.
One forum thread, real guy: “I thought I was stuck at 8 feet. Measured again. Tray ceiling in the middle is actually 9’4”. Built the whole setup. Driver works fine.“
Go measure. Not with your eyes. With a tape measure. The difference between “I think it’s 8 feet” and “it’s actually 8’8” at the peak“ is the difference between “no sim” and “full driver swings.”
Basement ceilings
Finished basements usually come with 8-foot ceilings. Unfinished basements with exposed joists can give you an extra 6 to 12 inches if you remove drop ceiling tiles.
One guy on Reddit: “Took out the drop ceiling tiles above the hitting area. Gained 11 inches. Full driver swings now. Took 20 minutes.”
Twenty minutes. That’s all it took to go from “can’t swing a driver” to “playing Pebble Beach in the basement.”
Width: More Flexible Than You Think
Width is the easiest one to solve:
- Right-handed only: 8 feet. Ball, hitting area, and a little margin.
- Right + left-handed: 10 to 12 feet. The ball position shifts so you need more room.
- Full simulator with screen: 10 feet minimum for a decent screen size.
If your room is narrow, you’ve got options:
- Run a net instead of a screen. Less width needed.
- Get a mat with multiple hitting positions.
- Accept right-handed only for now. You can always upgrade later.
One guy on GolfWRX: “My space is exactly 8 feet wide. Right-handed only. Carl’s Place 7’6” screen. Works perfectly. Would I like 12 feet? Sure. Do I need it? No.“
That’s the answer to 90% of width questions. More is better. Less works.
Depth: Depends on Your Launch Monitor
This is where your choice of launch monitor changes everything.

The radar depth problem is real. Radar launch monitors (Garmin R10, FlightScope Mevo+) sit behind the golfer and need to track the ball in flight. That means:
- 6 to 8 feet behind you for the unit
- 6 to 8 feet in front of you for ball flight
- Total: 15 to 20 feet minimum

Room-by-Room Guide
Garage Setup
Pros: Most space. Concrete floor. Easy to mount things to the ceiling and walls. You can park the car outside.
Cons: Temperature swings. Bad lighting. You have to move the car.
Typical garage dimensions: 20x20x9 (two-car) or 10x20x8 (one-car).
Best for: Almost every home golf setup. The two-car garage is the ideal space. You don’t need both bays. Use one side. Park in the other.

Converting your garage from a place where you park cars to a place where you play Sawgrass is a weekend project. Here’s what you need to think about before you start drilling holes.
Flooring. Your concrete slab is fine for the simulator. But standing on concrete for two hours straight? Your back will let you know around hole 14. WiFi is fine until it’s not, and you don’t want to diagnose a dropout mid-swing.
Climate control. You don’t need to heat the whole garage. You need to heat the six feet around your hitting mat. Options:
- Winter: $40 space heater pointed at the hitting area. Wear a hoodie. One guy: “I use a $40 space heater and wear a hoodie. The sim doesn’t care about 50 degrees. The golf ball doesn’t care. My hands care a little but not enough to stop.”
- Summer: $300-500 portable AC unit pointed at the hitting area. Or just open the garage door.
- Garage door insulation kit: $200-400. Keeps the heat in and the cold out.
Paint. Dark walls = better projection image. Light bounce ruins projector contrast. Flat dark gray or charcoal paint on the wall behind the screen costs $30 and makes your $500 projector look like a $2,000 projector. The white walls you currently have are the enemy of a good image.
Noise insulation. If you share a wall with the bedroom, your wife will hear you hitting balls at 10 PM. Foam insulation panels ($2 per square foot) on the shared wall. A rubber mat under the LM to dampen impact noise. And hitting foam balls if you’re really worried about waking the kids. One guy’s wife: “I can hear the club but it sounds like tapping a table. Doesn’t wake me up anymore.”

Basement Setup
Pros: Climate controlled. Year-round. Out of the way. Nobody sees the mess.
Cons: Low ceilings (usually 8 feet). Support columns. Damp basements need a dehumidifier.
Best for: Iron practice. Shorter club simulation. If the ceiling lets you swing a driver, you’ve hit the jackpot.
Tips:
- Check the ceiling height at the hitting spot, not in the middle of the room.

- Launch monitor + iPad. Less intrusive than a full enclosure.
- Check the ceiling height. Spare rooms usually have 8-foot ceilings.
Low-Ceiling Setup Strategies: What Works at 8 Feet, 9 Feet, and Everything Between
If your ceiling is 8 feet or less, you have two problems. Both are solvable.
Problem 1: You can’t swing a driver. Unless you’re 5’6“ with a compact swing, your driver is hitting the ceiling. Here’s what the guys who’ve been through this actually do:
- Accept irons-only indoor. Your 7-iron needs about 6-7 feet of headroom. Almost nobody can’t swing a 7-iron comfortably in an 8-foot room.
- Choke down on the driver. You’re giving up 10-15 yards, not 40. And hitting it 230 instead of 250 on a simulator screen? You won’t notice.
- Use a shorter club off the tee. 3-wood or 5-wood instead of driver. Same distance, less arc.
- Check for tray ceilings and vaulted sections. A lot of garages have 9+ feet in the middle where the hitting area goes. One guy: “Thought I was stuck at 8 feet. Measured again. Tray ceiling in the middle is 9’4". Built it. Driver swings fine.”
Problem 2: Your launch monitor choices are different. This matters more than you think. At 8 feet, you can’t put a radar unit behind you and expect it to track before the ball hits the ceiling. Here’s what fits at each height:

Projector placement at low ceilings. This is the gotcha nobody talks about. A standard throw projector needs to sit 10-15 feet from the screen — which puts it right in your swing path at 8-foot ceilings. Solutions:
- Short-throw projector (throw ratio 0.5:1 or less). Sits just above and slightly behind the hitting area. The beam clears your head.
- Ceiling mount behind the mat. Mount flush to the ceiling, 6-12 inches behind the hitting position. Aim down at the screen.
- No projector at all. Seriously. Use an iPad or laptop next to the hitting mat. Less cool than a projector, way cheaper, zero ceiling issues. Half the guys on Reddit do this and they’re still dropping their handicaps.

Backyard / Outdoor
Pros: Unlimited ceiling height. Unlimited space.
Cons: Weather dependent. No projection during the day. Setup and teardown every time.
Best for: Practice sessions. Radar-based launch monitors (they love open air).
Tips:
- Portable net. Net Return or Rukket. Done.
- Don’t leave electronics outside.
- Radar units (Mevo+, R10) are better outdoors than indoors.
How to Measure Your Space
Before you spend a single dollar or mention this to your wife, you need to measure your space. Here’s how.
- Measure the ceiling height at the exact spot where you’ll be standing to swing. Not in the middle of the room. Right where your club comes through.
- Measure the depth from the wall where the screen goes to the wall behind you.
- Measure the width at the narrowest point. Account for support columns, workbenches, storage racks.
- Slowly swing a driver. Can you complete a full swing without brushing the ceiling? If yes, you’re in business. If no, can you choke down and still swing comfortably?
One guy in a forum thread: “My space is 8’6” at the hitting spot. Driver swings fine as long as I don’t try to murder the ball. Which is probably good for my game anyway.“
Small Room Setups: 12x12, 10x10, and Everything Between
You don’t need a two-car garage. You don’t need a basement. You need a rectangle with a ceiling.
12×12 room. This is the smallest space where a full simulator with a screen makes sense. You’ll get a 9-foot-wide screen, a camera-based launch monitor (no radar — you don’t have the depth), and zero room for anything else. Single-purpose space. One guy on Reddit: “12×12. SkyTrak+. 8-foot screen. I can’t host friends. But at 9 PM when the kids are asleep, it’s just me and St. Andrews.”
10×10 room. Tight, but doable with the right gear. You’re looking at a net instead of a screen, camera-based LM (SkyTrak+ or Square Omni), and no projector — just an iPad on a stool next to you. This is a practice station, not an entertainment setup. But practice stations are how handicaps drop.
Narrow garages (10 feet wide or less). Single-car garages, side-by-side parking with a support column in the way, or any oddly thin space. Your options:
- One-sided setup only. Right-handed or left-handed, not both.
- 7-8 foot wide screen. Carl’s Place sells them. They work fine.
- Camera-based LM. Radar needs depth you don’t have at 10 feet wide.
Multi-user setups. Two righties can share the same mat in a 10-foot-wide room if they swap positions. But a right-handed and left-handed golfer together need 14 feet minimum. The ball positions are on opposite sides. You can’t share a mat. Look at the 12×12 room guide for specifics.
Adding a putting area. If your room is under 12 feet wide, the putting green goes perpendicular to the hitting area or it doesn’t exist. A basic putting strip needs 6x8 feet of its own real estate. Pick your priority: full swing practice or putting. Both in a small room is a stretch unless you’re building a dedicated sim shed.

That’s the number. A standard garage, basement, or spare room in an average American house meets or exceeds that.
The “I don’t have space” excuse is dead. You don’t get to use it anymore.

If they can do it, you can do it.
