Can you putt on a golf simulator? Yes, but it depends on your launch monitor. Camera-based LMs (SkyTrak+, GC3, Uneekor) track putting beautifully because they capture the ball at impact. Radar-based LMs (Mevo+, Garmin R10) struggle because the ball doesn’t travel enough distance for Doppler radar to register spin and speed accurately. Dedicated putting sensors and GSPro putting practice modes help either way.

You’re standing in your garage. You just dropped $2,500 on a simulator setup. The screen is glowing. You’re playing the 18th at Pebble Beach.

You’ve got 8 feet for par.

You line it up. You stroke it. The ball rolls toward the hole — and then… the launch monitor says you hit it 47 miles per hour and the ball flew 182 yards.

Yeah. That happens. And it’s the reason every guy thinking about a simulator has putt anxiety.

Here’s the real answer: yes, you can putt on a golf simulator. But the quality of that experience depends entirely on which launch monitor you bought. And some of the most popular ones — including the one sitting in every golf shop window — handle putting like a fish handles a bicycle.

Let me explain why, so you don’t end up with the wrong system for the thing you actually need to practice most.

The Two Second Explanation

The difference between a good putting experience and a bad one comes down to one thing: camera vs. radar.

Camera-based launch monitors sit next to the ball and take pictures. Thousands of pictures per second. A high-speed camera watching what the ball does from the instant you strike it.

Radar launch monitors sit behind you (or above you) and bounce radio waves off the ball. They track the ball as it flies through the air.

Here’s the problem: putting is a short roll across the ground. The ball travels maybe 20 feet. It doesn’t get airborne. It doesn’t fly through the radar beam.

If you’re using radar, the ball is already past the sensor’s best detection zone by the time it’s traveled two feet. The radar has to guess what happened. And guesses in golf technology are a polite way of saying “wrong.”

Camera systems see the ball the whole time. Radar systems lose it immediately. That’s the whole difference in one sentence.

The Radar Problem

For this to work, the ball needs to be in the air long enough for the radar to get enough readings. A driver shot gives the radar plenty of flight time. A 7-iron gives enough. A putt that rolls 10 feet on the ground and maybe gets half an inch of air? The radar gets maybe one reading. Maybe.

I’ve seen Garmin R10 owners report putting reads of 30+ mph on a 10-foot putt. The unit sees a little blip and thinks you hit it like Bryson DeChambeau at the 2020 US Open. It’s not that the R10 is a bad launch monitor — it’s a great one for the money. It’s that no amount of firmware updates can fix a physics problem.

SkyTrak+ — $2,000. Camera-based. Putting is excellent. This is the most popular home simulator launch monitor for a reason. The high-speed camera sits next to the ball and captures the full roll. It reads your putt speed, direction, and distance. With GSPro software, you putt on the actual green surface of the course you’re playing. It’s not perfect — you’re still putting on a mat indoors — but the data is real and consistent.

Bushnell Launch Pro / Foresight GC3 — $2,500–$6,000. Triscopic cameras. Putting is excellent. Same camera platform. Multiple high-speed cameras triangulate the ball’s position from impact through the full roll. If you’ve got the budget, this is the best putting experience you can get short of a $15,000 Quad.

Uneekor (EYE MINI, EYE XO, EYE XO2) — $1,500–$9,000. Camera + IR. Putting is excellent. Overhead-mounted systems track the ball from above. They see the full path. If you’re building a permanent enclosure, Uneekor systems are arguably the best for putting because they never lose sight of the ball.

The pattern is obvious: cameras work for putting. Radar doesn’t. If putting matters to you — and it should, because putting is literally half your score — buy a camera-based launch monitor.

The Software Factor

Here’s where it gets interesting.

Even with a perfect camera-based launch monitor, your putting experience depends on which software you’re running. This catches a lot of guys off guard.

GSPro ($250/year) — The best putting experience in simulator software. The greens have actual contours. The ball rolls properly. The physics model accounts for slope and speed. You can practice 6-footers with confidence that what you’re seeing is close to real. GSPro’s putting is good enough that you can actually work on your stroke and see improvement.

E6 Connect ($300/year) — Solid putting. Not as detailed as GSPro on the green physics, but perfectly playable. The ball reads feel a bit floaty for some guys.

TGC 2019 ($950 one-time) — Putting is fine. The physics are a little arcade-y compared to GSPro. But for $950 lifetime with no subscription, it’s a reasonable trade-off.

Awesome Golf ($200/year) — Fun putting. Great for families and casual play. Not serious practice.

FSX 2020 (Foresight native) — Excellent putting physics. You’re paying GC3 money, so you get GC3 quality. The green grids and break indicators are the best in the business.

Here’s the practical takeaway: if you have a camera-based launch monitor and GSPro, your putting experience is good enough to practice seriously. If you have radar and any software, your putting experience is going to frustrate you.

What Putting on a Simulator Actually Looks Like

Let me describe a real scenario so you know what you’re getting.

SkyTrak+. GSPro. You’re on 18 at Pebble Beach. You’ve got a 12-footer uphill with a subtle left-to-right break.

You step up to your mat. You address the ball. You putt.

The screen shows the ball rolling across the green. You see the speed. You see the line. You see it miss high (it broke less than you thought).

You adjust. You hit it again. This time it tracks. You read the GSPro green grid — it shows you the slope percentage in each direction. You aim a cup left. You stroke it firm. The ball starts on line and drops.

That’s a real experience. Guys do this every night. The feedback is useful enough to actually improve your putting.

Is it the same as a real green? No. You’re putting on a mat. The stimp is whatever your mat produces (usually faster than most muni greens). But the stroke data — face angle, path, speed — is real. The ball reaction on screen is consistent. You can diagnose a push or a pull. You can work on distance control.

It’s not a perfect substitute for real green putting. But it’s way better than not practicing putting at all for five months of winter.

What Doesn’t Work

Let me save you $400 in frustration.

Do not buy a radar-based launch monitor thinking you’ll “figure out” the putting. You won’t. The Garmin R10 will tell you your 6-foot putt went 38 mph. The Mevo+ will guess at anything inside 8 feet. The frustration will compound every time you three-putt on screen because the launch monitor gave you a bad read, not because you made a bad stroke.

If you already own a radar unit and putting is important to you, here’s your options:

  1. Accept the limitation. Use the simulator for full swing only. Practice putting separately on a real green or a putting mat.
  2. Use the software’s manual putt mode. GSPro and E6 both let you auto-hole putts inside a certain distance or manually input your putt result. It’s a workaround, not a solution.
  3. Upgrade to a camera-based system. This is the real answer. Sell the R10 on Facebook Marketplace. Buy the SkyTrak+. The putting experience alone is worth the upgrade.

The Honest Answer

Here’s where I land after hundreds of forum threads and personal testing:

Yes, you can putt on a golf simulator — if you bought the right launch monitor.

With a SkyTrak+, GC3, Uneekor, or Bushnell Launch Pro, putting is genuinely good. GSPro’s green physics are close enough to real that you can work on your stroke and see results on the course. You’re not going to confuse it with a perfectly maintained Augusta green, but it’s functional practice.

With a Garmin R10, Mevo+, or any radar system — you can’t putt. Not really. The hardware can’t do it. The physics won’t let it. No firmware update is going to fix that.

If putting is important to your game (and it should be — the Tour average from 8 feet is 50%, and most amateurs are worse), factor this into your buying decision. The camera-based systems cost more. They’re worth it.
