You bought a launch monitor. You bought a net. You bought a mat. You downloaded GSPro. You fire it up — and your laptop sounds like a jet engine taking off, the frame rate drops to 12 FPS, and Pebble Beach looks like a 2003 PlayStation game.

Your computer isn’t powerful enough.

This is the hidden cost nobody mentions. The launch monitor is $600. The software is $250. The computer to run it? That can be another $500-$2,000 if you don’t already have something capable.

The good news: you don’t need a $3,000 gaming rig. You need to understand what simulator software actually demands, and buy exactly enough computer to handle it. Not more, not less.

The Short Answer

You need a Windows PC with a dedicated GPU (graphics card). Minimum specs: Intel Core i5 (8th gen or newer) or AMD Ryzen 5, 8GB RAM, and an NVIDIA GTX 1060 or better. That handles GSPro, E6 Connect, and TGC 2019 at acceptable quality.

You don’t need a computer if: You buy a Garmin R50 (standalone device with built-in screen), or you only use a launch monitor for data-only practice (no course simulation).

You can’t use a Mac for most simulator software. GSPro, E6 Connect, and TGC 2019 are Windows-only. There are workarounds (Parallels, Boot Camp on Intel Macs), but they’re painful. Get a Windows machine.

Do You Even Need a Computer?

Before we get into specs, let’s figure out if you need a computer at all. Because some setups don’t.

Setups That DON’T Need a Computer

Setups That DO Need a Computer

This is the “I already have a laptop and want to try it” tier. It’ll work. Courses will look flat, frame rates will dip, and you’ll see texture pop-in. But you can play golf.

This is the sweet spot. GSPro runs at 60 FPS with good textures. E6 Connect looks great. TGC 2019 is smooth. You can project at 1080p without issues.

Enthusiast Specs (4K, Maximum Settings)

This is for people who want 4K projection, maximum detail, and zero compromises. Most of you don’t need this. A GTX 1660 gets you 95% of the visual quality for 30% of the cost.

The GPU Is What Matters

If you take one thing from this article, take this: the graphics card (GPU) is the component that determines whether your simulator runs smoothly.

The CPU matters. RAM matters. But the GPU is the difference between “Pebble Beach looks like Pebble Beach” and “Pebble Beach looks like a Google Earth render.”

Simulator software renders 3D environments in real time. Every frame, the GPU has to draw the course, the ball, the trees, the water, the sky. Do that 60 times per second at 1080p, and you need a dedicated GPU.

Integrated graphics (Intel UHD, AMD Radeon Vega): Will run sim software at 30-45 FPS on low settings. Acceptable for casual play. Not great.

Entry-level dedicated (GTX 1650, GTX 1660, RTX 3050): 60 FPS at 1080p on medium-high settings. This is where most sim owners land. Good balance of price and performance.

Mid-range (RTX 3060, RTX 4060): 60+ FPS at 1440p or 4K on high settings. If you’re projecting at 4K, this is your minimum.

High-end (RTX 4070 and above): 4K at maximum settings with headroom. Overkill for golf sim, great if this PC also does other things.

Desktop vs Laptop

Desktop: More performance per dollar. A $700 desktop outperforms a $1,200 laptop. Easy to upgrade — swap the GPU in 3 years without buying a new machine. Takes up more space. Needs a monitor (or connect directly to your projector).

Laptop: More expensive for the same performance. Can’t upgrade the GPU. But: portable, compact, has a built-in screen, and can live on a shelf in your garage without taking up floor space. If space is tight, a gaming laptop is the play.

Mini PC: The dark horse. Mini PCs like the Beelink SER7 or Minisforum HX99G pack desktop-grade GPUs into a box the size of a book. They’re not as powerful as a full desktop, but they’re small, quiet, and mountable behind a projector or on a shelf. Worth considering for a clean garage setup.

Three PC Builds at Three Price Points

The Budget Build: $500-$700 (Used or Refurbished)

Look for refurbished gaming desktops on eBay, Amazon Renewed, or local marketplaces. The GTX 1660 is the budget king — it runs GSPro at 60 FPS on medium settings, handles E6 Connect comfortably, and costs $150-$200 used.

The entire machine: $400-$600 used. Add a $50 wireless keyboard/mouse combo and you’re set.

The Sweet Spot Build: $800-$1,200 (New)

CPU: Intel Core i5-12400F or AMD Ryzen 5 5600
RAM: 16GB DDR4
GPU: NVIDIA RTX 3060 (12GB)
Storage: 512GB NVMe SSD
OS: Windows 11

New from CyberPowerPC, iBUYPOWER, or built yourself. The RTX 3060 runs everything at 1080p/60fps on high settings and can handle 1440p if you have a higher-end projector. 12GB of VRAM means it’ll handle future software updates without choking.

This is the build most simulator owners should target. It’ll last 4-5 years before needing a GPU upgrade.

The Overkill Build: $1,500-$2,500 (Future-Proof)

CPU: Intel Core i7-13700K or AMD Ryzen 7 7700X
RAM: 32GB DDR5
GPU: NVIDIA RTX 4070 (12GB)
Storage: 1TB NVMe SSD
OS: Windows 11

4K at 60+ FPS on maximum settings. Will handle anything simulator software throws at it for the next 5+ years. Also a genuinely good gaming PC if you (or the kids) use it for other things.

Most people don’t need this. But if you’re building a premium sim with a 4K projector and want it to look flawless, this is the spec.

The Mac Problem

GSPro, E6 Connect, and TGC 2019 are Windows applications. There is no Mac version of any of them. If you have a Mac, your options are:

  1. Parallels Desktop ($100/year): Runs Windows in a virtual machine on your Mac. Works, but there’s a performance hit — the GPU is virtualized, so frame rates suffer. Acceptable for casual play, not great.

  2. Boot Camp (Intel Macs only): Dual-boots into Windows natively. Full performance. But: Apple Silicon Macs (M1, M2, M3, M4) don’t support Boot Camp. If you have a recent Mac, this isn’t an option.

  3. Buy a cheap Windows PC: Honestly, a $500 refurbished desktop is better than fighting with Parallels on a Mac. The sim software experience is noticeably worse through virtualization.

If you’re a Mac household, budget for a Windows machine. It’s a cost of doing simulator business.

What About the Launch Monitor’s Own Software?

Some launch monitors have their own apps that don’t need a PC:

  • Garmin Golf app (R10, R50): Runs on phone/tablet. Data and basic simulation. The R50 runs Home Tee Hero internally — no PC needed.
  • Rapsodo app (MLM2Pro): iPhone-only. Data and basic simulation.
  • Square Golf app: Runs on phone/tablet. 1,000 course credits included.
  • SkyTrak app: Runs on iPad and PC. But for GSPro/E6, you need the PC version.

If you only use the manufacturer’s app, you might not need a PC at all. The PC becomes necessary when you want to run GSPro, E6, or TGC 2019 — the “real” simulator software with photorealistic courses.

Connecting It All Together

Here’s the typical signal flow for a PC-based simulator:

Launch Monitor → (USB or WiFi) → PC (runs GSPro/E6) → (HDMI) → Projector/TV → Impact Screen

The launch monitor captures your shot and sends data to the PC. The PC runs the simulation software, renders the course, and sends the video to your projector or TV. The ball flies on screen.

Cable tips:

  • Use a long HDMI cable (25+ feet) to reach from PC to projector
  • If the PC is far from the launch monitor, use WiFi (SkyTrak+ has built-in WiFi; others may need a USB extension)
  • A USB hub near the hitting area is handy for connecting the launch monitor, a webcam, and other peripherals

The Final Verdict

You need a Windows PC with a dedicated GPU if you’re running GSPro, E6, or TGC 2019. That’s the rule.

You don’t need a $2,500 gaming rig. A used desktop with a GTX 1660 ($500-$600) runs everything at 1080p without breaking a sweat. An RTX 3060 ($800-$1,200 new) is the sweet spot for a build that’ll last 5 years.

If you already have a gaming PC, you’re done. It’ll run simulator software without issue. If you have a work laptop with integrated graphics, budget $500-$700 for a dedicated sim PC.

And if you want to skip the computer entirely, buy a Garmin R50. It’s the only launch monitor that’s a complete standalone simulator. Costs more upfront, saves you from buying a PC.
