Golf Simulator Room Dimensions: Complete Space Requirements Guide
You measured the room. You know the numbers exist somewhere on a tape measure. But you don’t know if those numbers are big enough.
Most golf simulator room dimension guides give you a single number. Minimum ceiling height: 9 feet. Minimum depth: 12 feet. Minimum width: 10 feet. Those numbers are someone else’s averages. Your body, your room, and your launch monitor are different.
You need three numbers that fit your exact situation — your height, your room shape, and your launch monitor technology. Each one changes the math.

The Three Dimensions That Matter
A golf simulator needs space in three directions. You can’t skip any of them.
Ceiling height determines whether you can swing a driver. This one is personal — it depends on your height, your arm length, and your swing plane. If you’re 6’3“ with a steep swing, your 9-foot ceiling is tighter than the same 9-foot ceiling for a 5’8“ golfer with a flat swing.
Depth (ball to screen) determines which launch monitors work. It comes down to technology. Camera-based units sit next to the ball and need 6 to 10 feet of ball flight. Radar units sit behind you and need 12 to 15 feet of total room depth.
Width determines your screen size and whether a second golfer can stand next to you. This one is mostly about comfort, but it’s also about your enclosure. Too narrow and the ball hits the side netting on every slight mis-hit.
The good news: most rooms have enough of at least two of these. The bad news: the one you’re short on is probably the one you can’t change. So let’s figure out where you stand.
Ceiling Height: The Personal Number
This is the dimension that stops more builds than any other. And it’s the one most people misjudge.
The Simple Rule
If you’re 6 feet tall or shorter, you need 8.5 feet of ceiling height for irons and wedges and 9 feet for driver swings.
If you’re over 6 feet tall, add 2 inches for every inch of height above 6 feet. A 6’2“ golfer needs 8 feet 8 inches for irons and 9 feet 2 inches for drivers. A 6’4“ golfer needs 9 feet for irons and 9 feet 6 inches for drivers.
This assumes a standard 45-inch driver and a 38-inch 5-iron. If you play longer clubs (some drivers are 46 to 48 inches), add another 2 to 4 inches.
What Actually Happens at Each Ceiling Height
8-foot ceilings. You can swing irons, wedges, and hybrids. Full driver swings are risky unless you choke down and swing easy. A 6’0“ golfer with a controlled 80% driver swing can make it work. 9-foot ceilings. This is the sweet spot. Almost every golfer under 6’2“ can swing a driver without thinking about it. Golfers over 6’2“ should stand an inch or two closer to the ball or use a slightly shorter driver. It’s manageable. Full details in the 9-foot ceiling guide and the minimum ceiling height guide.
10-foot ceilings. You’re thinking about projector mounting and whether your enclosure reaches the joists. Ceiling height is solved.
8-foot 6-inch ceilings. This is the middle ground where most people actually land. Standard new-construction garages often spec 9-foot framing but the finished ceiling hangs at 8’6“ to 8’8“. Plenty for irons. Tight for driver but doable with a controlled swing.
Basement ceilings. Finished basements usually run 8 feet. Unfinished basements with exposed joists vary wildly. If you’ve got drop ceiling tiles above the hitting area, removing them buys you 6 to 10 inches. That’s the difference between “irons only” and “full driver swings.” One guy on Reddit removed his drop ceiling tiles and gained 11 inches. Took him 20 minutes.

Depth: The Technology Number
Depth is where most people make their first mistake. They decide on a launch monitor first, then realize their room is too shallow for it. Do this in the right order: measure your depth first, then pick a launch monitor that fits.
Camera-Based Launch Monitors (Sit Beside the Ball)
These units take photographs of the ball at impact and calculate trajectory from the images. They need the ball to fly forward into a screen or net, and they need at least 6 to 10 feet from the ball to the screen for the system to register a full shot.
Minimum room depth from wall to wall: 10 feet (8 feet from ball to screen, 2 feet behind the ball for your stance).
Comfortable room depth: 12 to 14 feet.
Best camera units for shallow rooms: SkyTrak+, Bushnell Launch Pro, Foresight GC3, Square Golf, Uneekor Eye Mini.
Radar-Based Launch Monitors (Sit Behind You)
These units bounce radio waves off the ball in flight. They need ball flight ahead of them and clearance behind them for the signal to work properly. Most radar units need 6 to 8 feet behind the ball for the unit itself, plus 6 to 8 feet of ball flight in front. Total minimum depth: 14 to 16 feet.
Comfortable room depth: 16 to 20 feet.
Best radar units for deeper rooms: FlightScope Mevo+, Garmin Approach R10, TrackMan 4.
The Exceptions
Some launch monitors blur the line. The Rapsodo MLM2Pro uses both a camera and radar — it needs 8 feet of ball flight minimum but sits behind the ball. The SkyTrak+ uses a camera for ball data and radar for club data, but it sits beside the ball like a camera unit.

If You’re Short on Depth
You have two options. A camera-based launch monitor that sits next to the ball, or a net-only setup where you skip the screen and hit into a net with a radar unit behind you. The net-only option works in rooms as shallow as 8 to 10 feet because the ball only needs to fly net-depth before stopping.
Width: The Comfort Number
Width is the most forgiving dimension. You need less than you think.
8 feet wide. Minimum for a right-handed golfer. You can fit a 7-foot-wide screen with 6 inches of netting on each side. You have room for your stance and follow-through — tight but workable.
10 feet wide. Comfortable. Fits an 8-foot screen with full side netting. Both right and left-handed golfers can swing without crowding.
12 feet wide. Luxury. You can run a 10-foot screen and have room for a putting green next to the hitting area.
If two golfers will be using the same setup — one right-handed and one left-handed — add 2 to 3 feet of width. The ball position shifts from one side to the other, and you need room for both stances without the enclosure walls crowding your swing.
Room Type Breakdowns
Every room type has its own constraints. Here’s how the dimensions change for each one.
Garage
Garages are the most popular simulator room for a reason. Standard two-car garages run 20 feet deep and 20 feet wide with 9-to-10-foot ceilings. That’s more than enough for any setup.
The dimension to watch: ceiling height. Check for obstructions. Garage door tracks hang down 4 to 6 inches. Openers take up another 6 to 8 inches. A 9-foot garage framing often gives you 8’4“ to 8’6“ of actual clearance. Measure where the hitting area will be, not in the middle of the room.
Deep garages (20+ feet) work with any launch monitor. Shallow garages (12 to 16 feet) need camera-based units like the SkyTrak+ or Bushnell Launch Pro.

Basement
Basements have the lowest ceilings of any room type. The standard finished basement ceiling is 8 feet. If you’re lucky, it’s 8’6“. If you have exposed joists, you might have 9 feet.
The workaround for low ceilings: hit irons and wedges exclusively. Drop the driver from your simulator practice. Most golfers hit their irons more often in sim practice anyway because the feedback on center strikes is better. You’ll improve more hitting 7-irons than you will pounding drivers.

12x12 Room
A 12x12 room gives you 12 feet of width and 12 feet of depth. The ceiling is the variable.
With a 9-foot ceiling, a 12x12 room works for driver swings with a camera-based launch monitor. You’ll have 8 to 10 feet of ball flight, 2 to 4 feet for your stance and the LM beside the ball. No room for a radar unit behind you — you need that depth for ball flight.

10x10 Room
A 10x10 room is tight but workable for a net-based setup. You’re putting a net in here.
Depth: 10 feet gives you 7 feet ball-to-screen and 3 feet behind the ball. That rules out radar units entirely. A camera-based unit like the SkyTrak+ or Square Golf fits.
Width: 10 feet is actually fine. You can run a 7.5-foot-wide screen (tight fit) or switch to a net.
Ceiling: if you have 8 feet, you’re hitting irons. If you have 9 feet, drivers are possible.
Spare Bedroom
A standard spare bedroom runs 10x12 to 12x14. The depth is usually the constraint — 10 to 12 feet. Camera-based launch monitors only.
The advantage of a spare bedroom: it’s climate-controlled, it’s inside the house, and you don’t have to move a car every time you want to hit balls. The disadvantage: you’re limited to a net or a very compact enclosure.

How to Measure Your Space
Go get a tape measure. A physical tape measure works better than a laser for this because flexible rulers catch ceiling dips that lasers miss.
Step 1: Measure the ceiling height at the hitting position. Stand where you’ll stand to hit balls. Measure straight up to the ceiling. Then measure 2 feet to the left, 2 feet to the right, and 2 feet forward and backward. Write down the lowest number. That’s your actual clearance.
Step 2: Measure depth from the back wall to the screen wall. If you’re building against a wall, measure from the back wall (where your heels will be) to where the screen will hang. Subtract 2 feet for your stance.
Step 3: Measure width between the walls. Subtract 6 inches on each side for enclosure framing and side netting tension.
Step 4: Find the ceiling obstructions. Look for ductwork, pipes, garage door tracks, ceiling fans, light fixtures, and sprinkler heads. Measure their clearance from the floor. The lowest obstruction is your effective ceiling height, not the joist height.
Common Mistakes
Buying the launch monitor before measuring the room. Do the math first. A Garmin R10 needs 14 feet of depth minimum. A SkyTrak+ needs 10 feet. If you buy the wrong one, you’re either returning it or rebuilding your room.
Trusting “standard” ceiling heights. A house built in 1990 with “9-foot ceilings” might have 8’10“ actual clearance after drywall and flooring. A garage with “8-foot ceilings” might have 7’8“ after the door track. Measure your actual numbers.
Forgetting the follow-through. Your swing extends behind you, above you, and around you. A golfer with a steep swing plane needs more ceiling height than one with a flat swing. A golfer who takes a big backswing needs more depth behind the ball.
Assuming a screen needs the full room width. A 10-foot-wide room can hold a 7.5-foot-wide screen with plenty of side protection. You don’t need to fill the entire wall.
Not accounting for the projector. A ceiling-mounted projector extends 6 to 12 inches below the ceiling. A standard short-throw projector mounted on a 9-foot ceiling gives you an effective clearance of 8 feet or less where the projector hangs. Mount the projector behind the hitting area.
