Perched 600 feet above the Pacific Ocean on the northwest coast of Maui, Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw masterpiece is unlike anything else in the PGA Tour rotation. The 18th hole is a 663-yard par-5 that plays 80 yards shorter than the scorecard, the 17th is a 211-yard par-3 that drops 200 feet from tee to green, and the fairways are so wide that Tour pros hit driver on every par-4 and par-5. It is the season-opening venue for the Sentry Tournament of Champions.

Three things make the Plantation Course a must-play on simulators:

Five Tips for Playing Kapalua on a Simulator
1. Trust the Simulator, Not the Scorecard
The 18th is 663 yards on the card but plays roughly 580 with the 300-foot drop. The 17th is 211 yards but plays roughly 190. The 5th is 532 yards uphill and plays roughly 550. The simulator handles the elevation math automatically - hit the club the sim tells you to hit for the effective distance.
2. Set the Wind to 15+ mph
The Plantation Course is designed to be played in the Pacific trade winds. Set the wind to at least 15 mph from the northeast with gust variability enabled. The front nine plays into the wind; the back nine plays downwind. The 5th hole - 532 yards uphill into the breeze - becomes the hardest hole on the course.
3. Lag Putt on the Massive Greens
The 18th green is 18,000 square feet. The 5th green is 14,000 square feet. Aim for the center of the green and accept the two-putt. A 60-foot putt on the 18th is a three-putt waiting to happen.
4. Club Down on Approach Shots
The Zeon Zoysia fairways are firm and produce 10-20 yards more rollout than Bermuda or Bentgrass. A 150-yard approach with a 9-iron will release 10-15 feet past the hole. Club down one club on fairway approaches.
5. The Par-5s Are Reachable - But Pick Your Spots
The Plantation Course has five par-5s. The 5th (uphill into the wind) and 12th (uphill) are three-shot holes. The 9th (521 yards, slight downhill), 15th (558 yards, downhill), and 18th (663 yards, dramatic downhill) are reachable. The 18th is the most famous reachable par-5 in golf.
