Kauri Cliffs is one of the most spectacular coastal courses in the Southern Hemisphere, and it is available on GSPro as a free community-built course. If you have played Cape Kidnappers on GSPro, this is the other half of the New Zealand bucket list.

What Is Kauri Cliffs?

Kauri Cliffs sits on a 6,000-acre property near Matauri Bay in Northland, New Zealand. It was designed by David Harman and opened in 2000, with later refinements by Rees Jones and Steve Weisser. The course occupies an old sheep ranch atop an ocean-front plateau, with 15 of the 18 holes running along the edge of the Pacific. The course plays at 6,528 meters (par 72) with a slope of 144, making it a serious test from the back tees. The 7th and 8th holes run parallel to the ocean, several hundred feet above the water. The 14th through 17th holes are strung along the cliff edge, requiring carries over gorges and canyons that drop into the sea. Golf Digest ranks Kauri Cliffs number 73 in the world. It is the sister course to Cape Kidnappers, 400 miles to the southeast, and together they form the premier New Zealand golf destination.

Kauri Cliffs on GSPro: Quality Assessment

The GSPro community build of Kauri Cliffs, designed by Tsquared, is listed on the course server and available through the in-game browser. The course is rated as beginner-friendly in difficulty, which is relative to the GSPro library. The real course is a demanding test, but the community build is accessible to a range of skill levels. The coastal holes are the highlight. The cliff-top views, the ocean backdrops, and the carries over the gorges are all present in the GSPro version. The course plays firm and fast, which is accurate to the New Zealand conditions. The visual presentation captures the native rough, the stands of fern, and the ocean views that make the real course so memorable. The designer has done a solid job with the routing and the green complexes.
