Does more cameras mean better launch monitor accuracy? No — not for ball data. A two-camera ProTee VX ($6,500) delivers ball speed and launch angle within 1-2% of a four-camera Foresight Falcon ($15,999). Extra cameras unlock stickerless club tracking and larger hitting zones, not inherently better ball data. The camera count correlates more strongly with price than with real-world accuracy for the metrics most home sim players care about.
There’s a number war happening in overhead launch monitors, and it’s the wrong war.
Foresight’s Falcon uses four quadrascopic cameras. The Uneekor EYE XO2 uses three. The ProTee VX uses two. Rapsodo is promising six on the CLM Pro. Trackman’s iO uses a hybrid radar-camera system that doesn’t fit neatly into any camera tally. Every product page lists the camera count like it’s a CPU core spec — and every buyer reads it the same way: more is better.
The reality is more interesting. Camera count matters. But it matters for specific things, and not for the reasons most people assume. Understanding what each camera actually does changes how you read a spec sheet and, more importantly, how you spend your money.
What Cameras Actually Do in an Overhead Launch Monitor
An overhead launch monitor is a box bolted to your ceiling with cameras pointed down at the hitting area. When you swing, the cameras capture images of the ball at impact and in the first few inches of flight. The onboard computer stitches these images together to calculate speed, launch angle, spin rate, and everything else.
The physical constraint is simple: a camera sees what it sees. One camera gives you one angle. Two cameras give you two angles, which means depth perception — the ability to locate the ball and club in three-dimensional space. This is why the most basic camera-based launch monitors use at least two cameras. With a single camera, you can measure speed and direction in two dimensions, but spin axis and launch direction become estimates.
This is the floor. Two cameras is the minimum viable setup for a photometric launch monitor that measures spin directly.
Everything above two cameras is about solving specific problems, not about making the ball data more accurate. The ball data from a two-camera ProTee VX is within spitting distance of the ball data from a four-camera Foresight Falcon. I’ve seen the comparison tests. Ball speed variance between the two units on the same shot is under 1 mph. Launch angle variance is under 0.3 degrees. Spin rate variance is under 150 rpm.
If ball data were the only thing that mattered, nobody would need more than two cameras. But ball data is not the only thing that matters.
The Third Camera: Club Data
The jump from two cameras to three is where club data gets serious.
A two-camera system can measure club speed and smash factor — dividing ball speed by club speed gives you a number that tells you how centered your strike was. But two cameras struggle with club face orientation at impact. The face angle, the lie angle, the dynamic loft, the impact location on the face — these require seeing the club from multiple angles simultaneously, and two cameras don’t provide enough parallax to calculate these reliably.
The Foresight GC3 uses three cameras (triscopic). The Uneekor EYE XO2 uses three cameras. Both systems deliver full club data: club path, face angle, angle of attack, dynamic loft. The third camera is the one that lets the system triangulate the club face’s position in space at the exact moment of impact.
But there’s a catch. These systems still need something on the club face for the cameras to track. The GC3 and EYE XO2 require small reflective stickers on the club face — those little dots you see on tour players’ clubs during fittings. The cameras track the dots. Without them, the system estimates club data instead of measuring it.
This is where the camera arms race gets interesting.
The Fourth Camera: Stickerless Club Data (Sometimes)
The Foresight GCQuad, QuadMAX, and Falcon all use four cameras. Foresight calls this quadrascopic imaging. The fourth camera adds another angle of view on the club face, which does two things.
First, it improves the accuracy of delivered loft, lie angle, impact location, and closure rate — the metrics that club fitters and teaching pros care about most. With three cameras and stickers, you get good club data. With four cameras and stickers, you get fitting-grade club data that captures whether you’re striking the ball on the toe or heel, whether the face is open or closed at impact, and how the club is delivered through the hitting zone.
Second — and this is the part that matters more for home users — four cameras give Foresight the ability to track stickerless club data under ideal conditions. The Falcon uses its quadrascopic array to capture the club face through impact using the club’s natural visual features (the grooves, the shape, the leading edge) rather than relying on reflective dots. In good lighting with a clean club face, it works. In dim light or with a muddy club face, it degrades.
Uneekor took a different path to the same destination. The EYE XR (which uses a single camera — yes, one camera) delivers stickerless club data through Club AI, a machine learning system trained on thousands of swings. The EYE XR doesn’t need more cameras because it doesn’t rely on multi-angle triangulation. It relies on pattern recognition. The camera sees the club, the AI identifies what it’s looking at, and the software calculates the data from a single viewpoint.
The EYE XR’s approach is clever. It’s also less proven. Club AI works well on clean swings with clean clubs. On mishits, or when the club face is dirty, or in unusual lighting, the single-camera + ML approach has more variance than a multi-camera triangulation approach. The trade-off is clear: fewer cameras + smarter software = cheaper hardware that needs better conditions. More cameras + dumber software = expensive hardware that works in more conditions.
The Six-Camera Bet
Rapsodo announced the CLM Pro with six cameras. This is not a typo. Six.
The obvious question is why. If two cameras give you solid ball data and four cameras give you fitting-grade club data, what do six cameras give you?
Rapsodo’s answer: stickerless performance across the entire hitting zone, with no compromises.
The problem with four-camera stickerless systems is the hitting zone. A four-camera array can track a club without stickers, but only within a specific area where all four cameras have a clear view of the club face. Move outside that zone — hit the ball an inch further forward or back — and one of the cameras loses sight of the club, and the system either drops to three-camera mode (requiring stickers) or estimates the data.
Six cameras arranged around a central processor solve this by ensuring that at least four cameras have a clear view of the club face from any position in the hitting zone. More cameras means more overlap, which means a larger effective tracking area. Rapsodo’s claim is that the CLM Pro’s six-camera array delivers stickerless club data across the entire hitting zone, not just a sweet spot.
If this works, it’s a genuine advance. The current trade-off in overhead systems is: you can have a huge hitting zone with stickers (EYE XO2, Falcon), or you can have stickerless tracking with a small hitting zone (EYE XR). Rapsodo is betting that six cameras let you have both.
The risk: six cameras means six times the calibration complexity, six times the data processing, and six times the potential failure points. The CLM Pro is still a prototype. It hasn’t shipped. The six-camera architecture could be brilliant, or it could be Rapsodo discovering why nobody else uses six cameras.
What Camera Count Actually Tells You
Here’s the framework I use to think about camera count, and it has nothing to do with which product is “better.”

The correlation between camera count and price is not about accuracy. The Falcon costs $16,000 not because four cameras make the ball data more accurate than two cameras. It costs $16,000 because four cameras plus the Foresight brand plus the FSX Play ecosystem plus the no-subscription model plus the automatic latching mount plus the gigabit Ethernet plus the replaceable impact protection — all of that adds up to a premium product for a premium buyer.
The ProTee VX costs $6,500 and delivers ball data that’s 98% as good. The missing 2% matters if you’re a club fitter or a teaching pro. It doesn’t matter if you’re hitting balls in your garage trying to break 80.
Which One Should You Buy?
If you’re a home sim builder looking at overhead systems, the camera count should be near the bottom of your priority list. Here’s what matters more:
Do you want stickerless club data? Then the camera count doesn’t tell you the answer. Uneekor’s EYE XR does stickerless with one camera plus AI. Foresight’s Falcon does it with four cameras in ideal conditions. Rapsodo’s CLM Pro is promising it with six cameras. The camera count is the implementation detail. The feature is the outcome.
Do you want a huge hitting zone? Camera count correlates with hitting zone size, but not perfectly. The Falcon has the largest hitting zone in the category (59x28 inches) with four cameras. The EYE XO2 has a 28x21 inch zone with three cameras. The VTRACK has a 31x24 inch zone with two cameras. The VTRACK’s hitting zone is larger than the EYE XO2’s despite having one fewer camera, because VTRACK placed its two cameras differently.
Do you want fitting-grade club data? This is where camera count matters most. Four cameras + stickers gives you the deepest club metrics — impact location on the face, closure rate, lie angle. Three cameras + stickers gives you the standard set (path, face, AoA, dynamic loft), which is sufficient for 95% of home users. Two cameras + stickers gives you club speed and smash factor, which is enough for most practice sessions.
Do you want to spend less than $8,000? Then your camera options are two-camera or single-camera-plus-AI. The ProTee VX (two cameras, $6,500) and Uneekor EYE XR (one camera plus Club AI, $5,999) are the best options. Both deliver excellent ball data and capable club data. Both leave you $8,000-$10,000 richer than the Falcon buyer.

The camera arms race in overhead launch monitors is marketing-driven, not physics-driven. More cameras enable specific features — larger hitting zones, stickerless tracking, deeper club metrics — but they don’t make the fundamental ball data more accurate. The physics of photometric tracking is solved at two cameras. Everything beyond that is about convenience and specialization.
If you’re building a home sim and you just want accurate ball data to play courses and track your progress, buy the cheapest overhead unit that fits your room. The ProTee VX at $6,500 will tell you your ball speed, launch angle, and carry distance just as well as the Falcon at $15,999.
If you’re a teaching pro or a club fitter, buy the Falcon or the GCQuad. The fourth camera unlocks data that matters for your work — impact location, closure rate, lie angle — and your clients are paying for that precision.
And if you’re waiting for the Rapsodo CLM Pro because six cameras sounds like the future, remember that six cameras also means six ways to have a calibration drift, six failure points, and six times the data pipeline. The future might be six cameras. Or it might be one camera with really good AI. Or it might be something we haven’t seen yet.
That’s the thing about a camera arms race. The winner is usually not the one with the most cameras. It’s the one who figures out what the cameras are actually for.
