AI Just Made Ball-Tracing Technology Dramatically Cheaper. Here’s Why That Matters for Your Home Sim.

Toptracer debuted this technology at The Open Championship at Royal Birkdale in July 2026, tracing 8,170 shots across all 18 holes. The biggest technology story at The Open this year wasn’t a player, a score, or a weather delay. It was a piece of software that watches golf balls fly and figures out where they’re going without needing a $20,000 camera rig to do it.
Toptracer, the company that puts those shot-traced arcs on your television during every PGA Tour broadcast, quietly debuted AI-assisted ball tracing at Royal Birkdale. They traced 8,170 shots across all 18 holes of the course using this new system. The company’s Director of Broadcast Technology, Ludvig von Schenck, said the technology “brings golf tracing years forward, and makes us leaner, faster, and more accurate than ever.”
The key phrase in the press release is buried in the middle, and it matters more than any other number in the announcement: AI tracing “helped scale at a lower cost and zero loss in quality.”
How Ball Tracing Works Today (and Why It’s Expensive)
If you’ve watched a golf broadcast in the last five years, you’ve seen Toptracer’s work. The ball comes off the clubface, and a colored arc appears on your screen tracing its flight. The arc tells you how far it carried, how high it peaked, and where it landed. It looks like magic. It’s not.
The current system uses a network of high-speed cameras positioned around the course. These cameras capture the ball in flight from multiple angles. Computer vision algorithms then reconstruct the trajectory. The hardware is expensive. The installation requires precision calibration. The processing power needed to stitch together multiple camera feeds in real time isn’t trivial.
This is why Toptracer is in about 1,450 sites globally, not 14,500. The cost per installation limits how fast they can expand. Every new range that wants shot tracing needs cameras, wiring, calibration, and computing infrastructure at every bay.
The 29% installation growth they reported in the first half of 2026 is impressive. But it could be much bigger if the per-location cost drops.
What AI Tracing Changes
AI tracing replaces the expensive camera hardware with something much cheaper: a trained machine learning model that can track a golf ball using fewer cameras, lower-resolution feeds, or even standard broadcast footage.
Think about what that means structurally. The expensive part of ball tracing was always the hardware — the high-speed cameras, the precise calibration, the dedicated processing units at every location. AI moves the cost from hardware to software. Software has a different economic curve. You train the model once, then deploy it everywhere for essentially zero marginal cost.
Von Schenck described it as making Toptracer “leaner” — which is corporate speak for cheaper to operate. The “zero loss in quality” part is the insurance policy. They’re not cutting corners. They’re using a better approach.
This is the same pattern that happened with launch monitors. Fifteen years ago, a launch monitor that could measure ball speed, launch angle, and spin cost $20,000 and filled a briefcase. What This Means for Toptracer’s Business
Toptracer has 1,450 sites across 38 countries. Their north star metric is hours played in bays — every screen was in use an average of six hours a day in 2025, every day of the year. Their range operators see a minimum of 50% increase in revenue in year one after installing Toptracer. The demand is there. The bottleneck is installation cost.
AI tracing removes that bottleneck. If Toptracer can deploy a system that requires one camera instead of four, or standard 60fps cameras instead of high-speed ones, the cost per bay drops dramatically. That means more ranges can afford it. More ranges means more data. More data means better models. Better models mean even cheaper hardware requirements. The flywheel spins.

The Home Sim Connection
The home sim buyer should care about this for three reasons.
First, every driving range that adds Toptracer is a place where someone can try sim golf for the first time. The 28,880 virtual rounds played on Royal Birkdale during Open week weren’t all sim enthusiasts. A lot of them were casual fans who walked into the Tournament Range, hit a ball, and saw their name on a leaderboard. That’s how you build the top of the funnel. Second, the commoditization pattern that killed the $20,000 launch monitor is now coming for ball-tracing hardware. The same AI techniques that let Toptracer trace shots with fewer cameras will eventually show up in home sim software. Golf technology is going through a structural shift that most people in the industry haven’t fully internalized. Hardware companies are becoming software companies. The business model moves from selling expensive boxes to selling access to smart code running on commodity hardware.
Toptracer’s AI tracing is a perfect example of this shift happening in real time. The technology debuted at a major championship, worked at scale, and the company itself said it was cheaper and as accurate. A year from now, every Toptracer installation will probably use some form of AI tracing. Two years from now, it’ll be standard across the industry.
