Why does your golf simulator show shorter distances than you hit on the course? Four factors cause this, and none of them means your launch monitor is broken. Indoor Swing Syndrome makes you subconsciously swing slower in a confined space. The mat effect hides fat shots — the club bounces off synthetic turf into the ball, stealing energy. Simulators report carry distance, but you remember total distance (carry plus roll). And radar-based units estimate spin indoors because they can’t see enough ball flight, and overestimated backspin kills distance. The machine is usually right. Your indoor swing is different.
You bought a launch monitor. You set it up. You hit your first 7-iron.
The screen says 145 yards.
You hit another. Same thing. 148 yards.
You know you hit your 7-iron 160. You’ve been playing for 15 years. You’ve hit it 160 at the range, on the course, in front of your friends. You know this.
So the launch monitor is wrong. Right?
Probably not.
I spent three months thinking my SkyTrak+ was defective. I emailed support. I posted on r/golfsimulator. I adjusted the height settings. I recalibrated everything. I was ready to box it up and send it back.
Then I took a video of my swing. And I saw what the machine was seeing.
The Four Things That Are Actually Happening
There are four reasons your simulator distances don’t match your course distances. One of them is psychological. Two are physical. One is a measurement artifact. None of them is “your launch monitor is broken.”
1. Indoor Swing Syndrome (The Wall Flinch)
You know how when you’re driving and you see a cop, you check your speed? Even if you weren’t speeding, you check. That’s what’s happening in your brain when you swing indoors.
Your subconscious knows there’s a ceiling eight feet above you. It knows there’s a wall three feet to your left. It knows that $2,000 launch monitor is sitting twelve inches from your ball. It knows the impact screen is expensive and you’d rather not rip it.
So your brain installs a safety governor. Nothing dramatic. You can’t feel it. But your swing speed drops by 3-5 miles per hour. Your follow-through shortens slightly. You might even flatten your swing plane a bit because you’re worried about the ceiling.
Three miles per hour of clubhead speed is about 6-10 yards of carry distance. On a 7-iron, that’s your 145 turning into 155. On a driver, it’s more like 15 yards.
The wild part: every golfer I’ve watched on a simulator claims they’re swinging freely. The video shows otherwise. The data proves otherwise. Your brain is protecting you from things you don’t even realize you’re worried about.
What to do about it: Spend a session hitting with only your swing speed on the display, not distance. See what you’re actually swinging. If your indoor swing speed is 3-5 MPH lower than your course speed, you’ve found your culprit. Most golfers get over Indoor Swing Syndrome within 2-3 weeks of regular practice. The first few sessions are the worst. Your brain learns that the ceiling isn’t going to eat you.
2. The Mat Effect (The Fat Shot Lie)
This is the one that makes people angry because it feels unfair.
On a real golf course, if you hit the ground one inch behind the ball, the club digs into the turf. The clubhead slows down dramatically. The ball goes 20 yards. You yell a bad word. You know exactly what happened.
On a simulator mat, hitting the ground one inch behind the ball works differently. The synthetic turf is bouncy. The club doesn’t dig in — it skips. It slides into the ball at nearly full speed. But here’s the problem: the ball was struck high on the clubface, not in the center. The energy transfer was poor. The ball speed is lower.
The feel: pure. It felt like you flushed it. The mat didn’t punish you like grass would.
The data: the launch monitor reads 5-8 MPH less ball speed and gives you a 130-yard shot instead of 145.
You think: “I hit that perfectly! This machine is garbage!”
The machine says: “You hit that fat. The mat just didn’t tell you.”
This is the single most common reason people think their launch monitor is wrong. It’s not the machine. It’s the mat. The synthetic turf is literally lying to your senses.
What to do about it: Buy a quality mat with a foam or gel layer underneath that simulates the feel of taking a divot. The Fiberbuilt Studio mat and the SIGPRO Softy are the gold standards. Cheap mats ($100-200) are the worst offenders — they’re basically a layer of plastic grass on concrete. They’ll let you get away with fat shots all day and your distances will be all over the place.
Also: use foot spray on your clubface. Hit 10 balls. Check where the strike marks are. If they’re consistently above the center of the face, you’re hitting it fat. The mat is hiding it, but the spray won’t lie.
3. Carry vs. Total Distance (The Ego Check)
Ask a golfer how far they hit their driver. They’ll say “260.”
What they mean is: “I hit one 240 in the air, it bounced on a hard fairway, and rolled out another 20 yards. That one shot. On a downhill hole. With a tailwind.”
Simulators don’t show you that. They show you carry distance. Where the ball lands. Not where it rolls to.
If you’re used to adding 15-20 yards of roll to your 7-iron on a dry summer day, the simulator is going to look short by exactly 15-20 yards. The machine is correct. Your memory is the one rounding up.
The difference is most dramatic with driver. A 250-yard carry on a simulator might look like 250 yards. But you remember your 280-yard bomb on hole 7, which was 250 carry and 30 roll on a downhill, downwind, firm-fairway day. The simulator is measuring the 250. You’re remembering the 280.
What to do about it: Use a launch monitor on an outdoor range to establish your baseline. Hit 20 balls with each club. Note the average carry distance. That’s your real number. Compare your simulator numbers to that baseline, not to your memory of your best shot ever.
4. The Radar Spin Problem (For Radar Unit Owners)
If you own a Garmin R10, a Mevo+, or any radar-based launch monitor, this one is for you.
To measure spin accurately, a radar unit needs to see the ball in flight for about 30 yards. That’s how long it takes to track the ball’s rotation and calculate RPM. In a garage, the ball flies 8-10 feet before hitting the screen. The radar doesn’t have enough data.
So the unit estimates. It uses an algorithm that takes your launch angle, ball speed, and club path, and guesses the spin rate. Sometimes it guesses wrong. Usually it overestimates backspin.
Too much backspin kills distance. The ball balloons, loses energy, drops short. An R10 that thinks you put 8,000 RPM on a 6-iron will show you a 135-yard shot when you actually hit it 155.
This is not a defect. It’s physics. Radar needs distance to measure spin, and your garage doesn’t have enough of it.
What to do about it: Three options. Buy RCT (Radar Capture Technology) balls — Titleist makes them, and they have a metallic dot inside that helps radar units read spin better. Upgrade to a camera-based unit if accuracy is critical — the Square Golf ($699) and Blue Tees Rainmaker ($599) are both affordable and measure spin at impact, not in flight. Or accept the limitation — the R10 at $499 is still the best value in home golf, and estimated spin is the trade-off you make for that price.
The Good News: You’re Probably Getting Better
If your numbers are consistently 5-10 yards shorter than your course numbers, your simulator is probably making you a better golfer.
Because you’re hitting off mats. And mats punish bad strikes less than grass. So every shot you hit on a simulator that feels good IS actually a good strike. And when you get on the course, where the grass gives you real feedback, those same strikes will produce better results.
The data backs this up. Golfers who practice on simulators with quality mats improve their ball striking faster than golfers who only hit at the range. The feedback loop is tighter. You see every shot shape, every distance, every dispersion pattern. The range just shows you a ball flying into the sky.
When Your Simulator Is Actually Wrong
There are cases where the machine is genuinely wrong. Here’s when to suspect it:

Camera units in bad light. Camera-based launch monitors need adequate lighting. If your room is dark, the cameras can’t track the ball properly. Add more light. The Uneekor Eye Mini, in particular, is known to struggle in dim rooms.

Radar units in very short rooms. If your room is less than 12 feet from ball to screen, radar units will struggle. The minimum recommended is 15 feet. Below 12 feet, you’re fighting physics.

Misaligned units. If your launch monitor isn’t level, isn’t aligned with your target line, or isn’t at the right height, the numbers will be off. This is the most common setup error. Read the manual. Follow the leveling instructions. Use a laser alignment tool if you have one.

Software settings. Make sure your simulator software is set to the right altitude, temperature, and environment. If you live in Denver and your sim thinks you’re at sea level, your ball will fly 10% further on the course than the sim shows. Adjust the settings.
The Verdict
Your simulator is not lying to you. It’s a truth-teller that doesn’t care about your handicap or your ego. The numbers it shows are the numbers you produced in that environment, under those conditions.
If those numbers are shorter than what you hit on the course, one of these four things is happening. And three of them are fixable. The fourth (carry vs. total) is just a math problem you need to accept.
The best thing you can do: take your launch monitor to an outdoor range for one session. Hit 10 balls with each club. Note the average carry. That’s your baseline. Compare everything at home to that number, not to the memory of your best shot ever.
Your simulator will make you a better golfer. But only if you trust the data. And the first step to trusting the data is understanding why it looks different from what you expected.
Your 7-iron goes 145 on the sim. It goes 160 on the course. The sim is right. The course is right. The difference is you. And that’s actually good news, because you can fix you.
