Why is your 300-yard GSPro drive only 270 on the course? Multiple factors stack up: altitude defaults that add 5-10%, ideal temperature settings, sim balls that fly farther than premium balls, clean mat contact vs. uneven lies, and the fact that you swing differently when you don’t have to watch where the ball goes. Combined, 5-15% distance inflation is normal. And no — it doesn’t make your practice useless. Relative improvement transfers perfectly.


You hit a 300-yard drive on GSPro last night. Felt great. Center of the face, baby draw, 175 ball speed, the whole thing.

Then on Saturday, you stripe one on the 10th hole — same feel, same swing — and it rolls out to 271.

What the hell happened?

If this has happened to you, you’re not alone. It’s the most common complaint in every golf simulator forum on the internet. “My sim says I hit it 300. On the course I’m barely carrying 250. Is my simulator lying to me?”

Your simulator is running on a set of assumptions about altitude, temperature, ball type, and turf conditions. Most of those assumptions default to “perfect practice conditions.” The course is the opposite. Understand that gap and you can either fix the settings or — more importantly — stop caring about the absolute numbers and focus on what actually matters.

Let me explain what’s happening.

The Altitude Lie

This is the biggest single factor, and nobody talks about it.

When you load up a course on GSPro, the software simulates ball flight based on whatever altitude you set in your environment settings. GSPro defaults to sea level. Most people never touch that setting.

If you play golf at sea level, that’s correct. Your sim numbers match.

If you play golf anywhere else — and by “anywhere else” I mean basically everywhere except Florida and the Gulf Coast — your sim is giving you distance you don’t actually have.

The math is straightforward: at 5,000 feet, air is about 17% less dense than at sea level. Less air resistance means the ball travels farther. A 270-yard carry at sea level becomes a 290-yard carry at Denver altitude. There’s a reason the PGA Tour’s average driving distance leaderboard is dominated by guys who play in altitude — because the ball literally goes farther.

Run it in reverse and it gets weird. If you’re playing a course at 500 feet elevation and your sim is set to sea level, you’re playing in more air resistance than your course has. Your sim drive should actually be SHORTER than your course drive. And vice versa — if you’re at 2,000 feet and your sim is at sea level, your sim is showing you distance you’d only get at sea level, not at the elevation you actually play.

Most people never touch this setting. They load GSPro, see “68°F, sea level” and think “looks fine.” It’s not fine. It’s the difference between 300 and 280 on every single shot.

The fix: Set your altitude to wherever you actually play golf. If you’re in Atlanta (~1,000 feet), set it to 1,000 feet. Then your sim distance matches course distance.

The smarter approach: Don’t fix it. Leave it at sea level and just know your sim numbers are 5-10% higher than reality. It doesn’t matter for improvement.

Temperature Is Not Optional

Related to altitude: temperature.

A golf ball at 40°F is a different object than a golf ball at 80°F. The rubber compounds stiffen in cold weather. The ball compresses less. Ball speed drops. Carry distance drops by roughly 2 yards per 10 degrees Fahrenheit below 75°F.

If your sim is set to 75°F and you’re playing in 50°F weather, you’re getting 5 yards more carry on every iron shot in the sim than you would on the course. Driver? Probably 8-10 yards.

Most sim software defaults to a comfortable room temperature. That’s wrong if you’re practicing for a round in March or November.

The Ball Question

Simulator balls are not golf balls. They’re approximations. Some are specifically designed for sim use (Titleist RCT balls, Callaway Chrome Soft RCT) and they’re reasonably accurate. But most sim balls — the ones that come with launch monitor packages, the random practice balls in the bin, the “simulator approved” generic balls — are designed to not damage screens, not to match a Pro V1’s flight characteristics.

And even among real balls, the differences are meaningful. A Pro V1 at 80°F launches differently than a Kirkland Signature at the same temperature. If your sim is calibrated to a Pro V1 and you play Wilson Duo Softs on the course, your sim numbers are wrong.

Titleist RCT balls (Radar Capture Technology) solve a different problem entirely: they improve spin measurement accuracy on radar-based launch monitors. Better spin data means the distance calculation becomes more accurate. It improves the instrument reading itself, rather than changing the actual ball flight.

The practical reality: If you hit the same ball model in your sim as you play on the course, your sim distances will be 2-5% higher because of the other factors (altitude, temp, mat). If you hit sim balls, add another 3-5%.

The Mat Effect

This is the one nobody wants to talk about because everyone loves their Fiberbuilt.

Hitting off a mat is not the same as hitting off grass. The club interacts differently. The ball launches differently. Here’s the twist: mats make you hit the ball LONGER in some cases and SHORTER in others.

A good lie on a mat produces a perfect strike. No grass between clubface and ball. No divot catching the hosel. No half-inch depression from an old divot. It’s a perfect lie every time. So of course you hit it farther — you never hit a bad lie.

But there’s a catch: mats reduce spin on iron shots. The club bounces off the mat differently than it cuts through turf. Lower spin means more roll-out. On a simulator, that extra roll is calculated into the total distance. On the course, that low-spin shot is either flying into the back of the green or spinning back.

The net effect: your iron distances on a mat are probably 3-5% longer than on grass, but with less spin. Your driver distances are similar because you’re teed up anyway, but the mat doesn’t punish a slightly fat shot the way turf does.

The Indoor Swing (The Real One)

You swing differently when you can’t see where the ball goes.

In a simulator, you make contact and then look at a screen. Your brain doesn’t get the visual feedback of “that ball is slicing toward the trees on the right.” You don’t subconsciously adjust mid-swing because you saw the ball start left. You just swing your swing and look at the numbers afterward.

This matters because 40% of golf is compensating for what you see. The guy who slices it on the course is often not slicing it in the sim. His brain isn’t trying to bail out of the shot the way it does when there are trees right. He swings freely, releases the club, and hits it straight. On the course, tight fairway, internal pressure, and he hits his usual block-slice.

The opposite is also true: some people swing MORE aggressively in the sim because there’s no consequence. No OB right. No water left. No 50 people watching from the patio. Just a screen and a number. And when you swing freely, you swing faster, which means more distance.

This effect is real and it’s measurable. I’ve seen people gain 5 mph of clubhead speed in the sim compared to a monitored range session. They’re swinging the way they should be swinging — the sim just removes the mental barriers that slow them down on the range.

The Stacking Effect

Here’s how the math stacks:

Ball (sim ball vs. premium ball) +3% on sim
Mat conditions +2-5% on sim

Total +10-22% on sim

That’s your 300-yard sim drive turning into a 260-yard course drive if you stack everything in the wrong direction.

But here’s the important part: the stacking effect is consistent. Your sim numbers might be 12% higher than your course numbers, but that 12% is the same across every club. Your 150-yard 7-iron on course is a 168-yard 7-iron in the sim. Your 200-yard 5-iron is a 224-yard 5-iron. The ratio holds.

Why It Doesn’t Matter (The Part You Actually Need to Read)

You probably expect me to give you a fix here. “Do this, set that, buy these balls, and your numbers will match.”

I’m not going to do that. Because chasing exact distance matching between sim and course is a fool’s errand, and here’s why:

Relative improvement is all that matters.

If you gain 10 yards of carry on your 7-iron in the sim, you will gain 10 yards on the course. The absolute number doesn’t matter — you had 150 on course and 168 in the sim, and now you have 160 on course and 178 in the sim. The improvement transferred perfectly. You just care about the wrong number.

The sim is not a measurement instrument for your course performance. It’s a training tool for your swing. The distance numbers are reference points, not truths. If you’re more consistent in the sim today than you were last month, you’re getting better.

The people who get obsessed with “my sim says I hit it 300 but I only hit it 260 on course” are missing the point. The sim told you that you CAN hit it 300 when conditions are perfect and you swing freely. The course is telling you what happens when conditions are imperfect and you’re tight. Both are useful information. Neither is a lie.

What You Should Actually Do

Set your altitude to your local elevation if it really bothers you. That’s the one setting that has a meaningful and predictable effect.

Don’t chase exact temperature matching — just know that your winter sim numbers will be higher than your winter course numbers, and that’s fine.

Use whatever ball makes your launch monitor happy (RCT if you have a radar unit, standard if you have a camera unit). Don’t try to match your course ball.

But most importantly: stop comparing absolute numbers. Compare improvement rates. Compare consistency metrics. Compare your driver dispersion in the sim today vs. three months ago. Those are the numbers that actually tell you whether you’re getting better.

The 300-yard sim drive represents a version of you with every variable stacked in your favor — the one who swings free, hits a perfect lie, in perfect conditions, with a ball optimized for the equipment. On the course, you’re that same person dealing with 55-degree weather, a slightly uneven lie, and the knowledge that there’s water left.

The gap between those two people is not the simulator’s fault. It’s the gap between practice and performance. And that gap closes the more you understand it.
