The 0 Golf Ball You Didnt Know You Needed: RCT, RPT, and What Your Launch Monitor Actually Sees
Your new Garmin R10 arrives. You set it up in the garage. You grab a sleeve of random Pro V1s from your bag. You hit a few shots. The numbers look fine. Ball speed: 145. Carry: 270. Spin: 2,800.
That spin number is a guess. A good guess, maybe, but still a guess.
The R10 is a Doppler radar unit. It works by bouncing radio waves off the ball and measuring the frequency shift as it moves away. That shift tells it the ball speed. It tells it the launch angle. It even estimates the trajectory. But spin? Indoor radar units have a fundamental problem: the ball only travels 8-12 feet before hitting the net. There’s not enough ball flight data for the radar to measure spin directly. So it estimates.
The error on that estimate? Anywhere from 5% to 30%, depending on conditions, ball type, and how much the algorithm likes you today.
There is a fix. It costs $70 a dozen, and it’s called an RCT ball.
The Three Ball Categories
The simulator ball ecosystem breaks down into exactly three categories, and the boundaries are not fuzzy.
Category 1: Radar Capture Technology balls. These are balls with a metallic reflective layer embedded inside the cover. Titleist makes them. They cost $70/dozen, same as regular Pro V1s. The metallic layer creates a stronger radar return signal, which gives the Doppler unit enough data to actually measure spin rather than estimate it. Category 2: RPT (Rapsodo Precision Technology) balls. These are balls with a specific printed dot pattern on the surface. Callaway makes them in partnership with Rapsodo. The MLM2PRO’s Impact Vision camera reads the dot pattern at 240 frames per second to measure spin rate and spin axis. Without RPT balls, the MLM2PRO still gives you ball speed, launch angle, and carry distance. But spin axis? That’s a blank.
Category 3: Any clean premium ball. Camera-based photometric systems (SkyTrak+, GC3, GCQuad, Uneekor Eye Mini, Square Golf, Bushnell Launch Pro) take high-speed photos of the ball at impact. They track the dimple pattern across multiple frames to calculate spin. Any ball with visible dimples works. Dirty balls, scuffed balls, range balls with no dimples? Those cause problems. But a clean Pro V1, a clean Callaway Chrome Tour, a clean Kirkland Signature? They all work identically.
The Radar Problem Explained
The reason radar launch monitors need RCT balls is a physics problem, not a marketing one.
Doppler radar measures velocity by detecting the frequency shift of the reflected signal. For a golf ball, the radar signal hits the surface and bounces back. The ball’s surface is moving as it spins, which creates a modulation on the returned signal. In theory, that modulation encodes the spin rate. In practice, the signal-to-noise ratio of that modulation is terrible when the ball only travels 8 feet before hitting a net.
Outdoors, radar units get 100+ yards of ball flight to accumulate enough data. The FlightScope Mevo+ outdoors is a different device from the Mevo+ indoors. The same radar hardware, different confidence interval on every measurement.
The RCT ball solves this by embedding a metallic layer inside the cover. The radar signal reflects off the metal layer, which produces a much stronger return signal. MyGolfSpy’s 2026 launch monitor test quantified the difference. With a standard Pro V1, the Garmin R10 showed an average spin error of 350 rpm on indoor shots compared to a GCQuad reference. With an RCT ball, the error dropped to 120 rpm. The RPT Requirement

The pattern is obvious. If your launch monitor is radar-based and you use it indoors, you need RCT balls. If your launch monitor is camera-based, you don’t. If your launch monitor is the MLM2PRO, you need RPT balls specifically.
The “But Is It Worth It” Math
A dozen RCT balls costs $70. A dozen regular Pro V1s costs $70. The price is the same because Titleist isn’t charging a premium for the technology — it’s the same ball with a metal layer inside. For any data-driven purpose, the answer is different. If you’re club gapping, the 200-300 rpm error on an estimated spin number translates to 3-5 yards of carry distance error. That’s the difference between a 150-yard 7-iron and a 155-yard 7-iron. If you’re building a gapping chart, that error propagates across every club in your bag.
If you’re taking lessons, your instructor is looking at your spin numbers to diagnose your delivery. An estimated spin number that’s 15% off leads to a different swing recommendation. A 15% error on a 6,000 rpm 7-iron is 900 rpm. That’s the difference between a well-struck shot and a slight miss. Your instructor can’t tell which one you hit if the numbers are wrong.

A SkyTrak+ owner spends $1,995 on the hardware and $0 on balls. A Garmin R10 owner spends $599 on the hardware and $70/dozen on balls for accurate spin. Over three years of ownership, assuming four dozen balls per year (generous for a sim-only ball), the R10 owner spends $840 on balls. The SkyTrak+ owner spends $0.
That $840 doesn’t close the gap between a $599 R10 and a $1,995 SkyTrak+. But it narrows it. And it’s a recurring cost that most R10 buyers don’t factor into their purchase decision.

Their spin numbers are wrong and they don’t know it. And honestly? For most of them, it doesn’t matter. They’re not doing club fitting. They’re not building a gapping chart. They’re hitting balls in the garage and having fun.
But if you’re the kind of person who reads this site, you’re probably the kind of person who wants to know. You want to know that your spin numbers are real, not estimated. You want to know that the distance you’re seeing on the screen is the distance you’d see on the course.
For you, the answer is simple. If you own a radar-based launch monitor, buy a dozen RCT balls. Use them for any session where the data matters. Use your old balls for the sessions where you’re just swinging. One dozen lasts a long time if you’re only using them for data sessions.
If you own an MLM2PRO, buy RPT balls. The device is a different product with them. Without them, you’re getting half the data you paid for.
If you own a camera-based system, you’re fine. Any clean ball works. But keep your balls clean. A dirty ball with obscured dimples can cause the same problem for a camera system that a non-RCT ball causes for a radar system. Wipe them down between sessions.
The $70 question has a $70 answer. RCT balls are not a luxury. They are the difference between measured data and estimated data. For radar users, that difference is the difference between a simulator and a toy.
