7 Biggest Sim Buying Mistakes That Cost You

And How to Avoid Every One

Buying the wrong launch monitor leads the list. Hidden costs, bad mats, spouse neglect. Seven expensive mistakes and exactly how to avoid every single one.

I’ve watched dozens of guys make the same mistakes. Smart guys. Guys who researched for months. Guys who spent $8,000 on a setup they couldn’t actually swing in.

The problem isn’t the information. It’s the order. Most people start with the fun part (which launch monitor? which software?) and skip the boring part (how much room do I have? what’s my real budget? does my wife know I’m doing this?).

Dodge these and you’re already ahead of 80% of first-time builders.

Mistake #1: Buying the Launch Monitor Before Measuring the Room

This is the big one.

You buy a Mevo+ because you read it’s the best mid-range radar unit. It arrives. You set it up in your 12-foot-deep garage. And then you discover the Mevo+ needs 16-18 feet of ball flight to read spin accurately. You’re 4 feet short. Your data is garbage.

Your room depth determines your launch monitor category, not your budget.

  • Under 10 feet total depth — You need an overhead unit (Uneekor EYE XO, VTrack, ProTee VX). Period. No floor unit works in this space.
  • 10 to 14 feet — Camera-based floor units (SkyTrak+, Bushnell Launch Pro, Square Golf Omni, Uneekor Eye Mini). These sit next to the ball and need about 8-10 feet of ball flight.
  • 14 to 18 feet — You can use camera OR radar. The Mevo+, MLM2Pro, and Garmin R10 start to work here, but camera units are still more reliable indoors.
  • 18+ feet — Any launch monitor works. You have my envy.

The right order: tape measure first. Credit card second. If you haven’t measured your room, you haven’t started shopping yet.

Mistake #2: Ignoring Total Cost of Ownership

The launch monitor is the headline. It’s also 40-60% of the actual cost.

A $2,500 Bushnell Launch Pro looks affordable until you add:

  • Hitting mat: $200-700
  • Impact screen: $200-800
  • Enclosure frame: $300-1,200
  • Projector (if you want full immersion): $700-2,000
  • Gaming PC (if you want GSPro or E6): $800-1,500
  • Software subscription: $100-500/year
  • Cables, mounts, flooring, lighting: $200-500
  • Mat replacement every 2-3 years: $200-500

That $2,500 launch monitor is now part of a $5,000 to $8,000 system. And you’ll be paying $200-500 every year just to keep the software running.

I’m not saying don’t do it. I’m saying know the real number before you start. The guy who budgets $3,000 and ends up spending $6,000 feels like he failed. The guy who budgets $6,000 and spends $5,500 feels like a genius.

Mistake #3: Buying the Cheapest Hitting Mat

This is the mistake nobody warns you about because it doesn’t show up until month three.

You buy a $99 mat from Amazon. Looks fine in the photos. Feels… okay the first week. Then your elbow starts hurting. Then your wrist. Then you start dreading your sim sessions because every swing sends a shock up your arm.

Cheap mats use a thin foam layer on top of concrete or hard rubber. They don’t absorb impact. Every fat shot sends the full force of the ground back into your joints. And if you hit 100 balls a session, that’s 100 micro-traumas per arm.

The hitting mat is where you should spend more, not less. A $300-500 mat from Fiberbuilt, SIGPRO, or Holy Grail will save your elbows and last 3-5 years. A $100 mat will hurt you in 3 months and need replacing in 12.

Your call. But I’ve never met anyone who regretted buying a good mat. I’ve met plenty of guys who regret the cheap one.

Mistake #4: Forgetting About Wife/Partner Approval

This is real. I’m not being cute.

The single biggest obstacle to building a home golf simulator isn’t the money or the space. It’s the conversation with the person you share your house with.

You get excited. You buy equipment. It arrives. You spend a weekend building it. Your garage now has a big screen, a net, and a mat where the car used to go. Your partner comes home from Target and says “where am I supposed to park?”

Now the sim is a point of tension, not a source of joy.

The right move is to have the conversation BEFORE you buy anything. Not “I’m building a golf simulator, deal with it.” That’s how you end up with an unused sim and a cold bedroom.

The conversation that works: “I want to build something in the garage that I’ll use every day during winter. It takes up about half the space. Here’s what it looks like. And here’s what I’m willing to do to make it work for both of us.”

  1. The Sports Truce — She gets a budget-matched thing she wants. A vacation. A Peloton. A kitchen renovation. Reciprocal, transparent, negotiated.
  2. The Multi-Use Pitch — “This screen works for movie nights too.” (It actually does.)
  3. The Dad Guilt Play — “Instead of being gone 5 hours every Saturday, I’ll be home. In the garage. Available if you need me.”
  4. The Surprise Build — Don’t do this one. It’s the worst.
  5. The Boiling Frog — Start with a $500 tripod setup in the yard. Then a net. Then a screen. Then a projector. Each upgrade is small enough that nobody notices.

The sim that has partner buy-in gets used. The sim that was a surprise gets dusty.

Mistake #5: Buying a Radar Launch Monitor for a Tight Room

Radar is great outdoors. Indoors, it needs space. A lot of space.

Radar units (Mevo+, Garmin R10, MLM2Pro, Mevo Gen2) work by bouncing radio waves off the ball as it flies. In a tight room, those waves bounce off the ceiling, the walls, and everything else before they come back. This creates noise in the data. Your spin numbers wander. Your carry distance is inconsistent. You’re constantly second-guessing whether it’s you or the machine.

The rule of thumb: radar needs 18-20 feet of total room depth. That’s from the radar unit behind the ball to the net/screen in front. If your room is 14 feet deep, radar will work but you’ll always have a data quality question mark.

Camera units (SkyTrak+, Bushnell Launch Pro, Square Golf Omni, Uneekor Eye Mini) sit next to the ball. They take photos of impact. They need 8-10 feet of ball flight. That’s it. They don’t care about ceiling height. They don’t care about walls reflecting signals.

If your room is under 14 feet deep and you’re considering a radar unit — stop. Go camera. Your data will thank you.

Mistake #6: Skipping the PC Requirements

GSPro runs on a gaming PC. E6 runs on a gaming PC. TGC 2019 runs on a gaming PC.

A $400 laptop from Costco won’t cut it. I’ve seen guys buy a $3,000 launch monitor and try to run it on a 5-year-old Dell. The result is 12 frames per second, constant stuttering, and a feeling that the whole thing was a mistake.

Minimum specs for GSPro (2026):

  • CPU: Intel i5-12400 or AMD Ryzen 5 5600
  • GPU: NVIDIA RTX 3060 or AMD Radeon RX 6600
  • RAM: 16GB DDR4
  • Storage: 256GB SSD (courses take up space)

That’s about $800-1,000 for a new build, or $600-800 if you buy used. You can go cheaper if you’re willing to run at lower settings, but don’t expect silky smooth 60fps on the new Unity 6 courses.

The exception: Garmin R50 runs Home Tee Hero natively (no PC needed). GOLF+ Sim runs on a Meta Quest headset ($499, no PC). But if you want GSPro or E6 — which is what 90% of sim owners end up wanting — budget for the computer.

Mistake #7: Not Planning for Future Upgrades

You buy a $500 Garmin R10 today. Six months later, you want something better. You buy a Bushnell Launch Pro. Great. But now the R10 is in a drawer and your screen and mat were built around the R10’s requirements.

Build the room so the non-LM components “survive upgrades.” That’s the smarter play.

A quality impact screen ($300-800) will work with any launch monitor. A proper hitting mat ($300-500) will work with any launch monitor. A good projector ($700-2,000) will work with any launch monitor. These are the components you don’t want to replace.

The launch monitor is the component you WILL replace. The data gets better every year. New products launch every 6-12 months. The LM you buy today is the one you’ll want to upgrade in 18 months.

So plan for that. Build the enclosure big enough. Buy the mat that’s good enough to keep. Get the projector that works for your room size. Then the only thing you change is the little box on the floor.

This is what the forum guys mean when they say a component should “survive upgrades.” The mat and screen live through three launch monitors. The launch monitor is a rental.


The Right Order

  1. Measure your room — Depth, width, ceiling height. Write it down.
  2. Set a total budget — All-in. LM, screen, mat, PC, projector, software, cables, lighting.
  3. Choose your software ecosystem — GSPro? E6? Home Tee Hero? This determines LM compatibility.
  4. Pick your launch monitor — By room depth first, then by budget.
  5. Build the room around it — Screen size, enclosure, projector throw distance, mat placement.
  6. Buy the PC — If you need one, don’t cheap out.
  7. Have the conversation — With your partner, not your credit card.
  8. Start hitting — Within your budget, within your space, with no regrets.

I’ve seen guys do it in the wrong order and spend $3,000 fixing mistakes. I’ve seen guys do it in the right order and hit their first ball 90 minutes after the last box arrived.

The right order costs nothing. The wrong order costs everything.
