Your coffee mug on the workbench. Your kid’s bike leaning against the wall. Your spouse walking through to grab a tool. Your face, your body, your living space — every time you hit a ball.
This is not surveillance footage. It’s not a Ring doorbell or a Nest cam. It’s a golf product doing what it’s designed to do. But the result is the same: a camera in your private space, pointed at you, connected to the internet, with footage that gets uploaded, stored, and used by someone else.

The Short Version
Every brand handles your data differently, but the common thread is this: the camera sees more than just your ball, and the company that made the device owns whatever it captures.
Rapsodo’s privacy policy says it may sell your personal information. SkyTrak collects “audio/video information” and “fitness and biomechanical information.” Garmin’s membership agreement demands a “perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide” license to any content you create through the service. Square Golf uploads shot data to cloud services but doesn’t specify video retention. The variations are interesting but the outcome is the same: the data from your practice session leaves your house and lives on someone else’s server.
None of this is nefarious on its own. These companies aren’t peeking at your garage footage for entertainment. They’re building analytics products, training AI models, and generating revenue from aggregated data. The question is whether you’re comfortable with that arrangement — and whether you even knew it existed when you bought the device.
Rapsodo MLM2Pro: The Most Explicit Terms
Rapsodo’s terms of use are the most directly worded in the industry. Here is what they say, in plain English:
The MLM2Pro uses “high speed cameras in conjunction with radar to take pictures and/or video of a ball during or at contact and during flight.” That data “is uploaded to and stored by Rapsodo” and “may include information beyond what is measured including but not limited to geographical position of the user, video of the action (e.g., swing or pitch) and the user, time and other relevant data.”

Rapsodo “may use your Usage Data, in perpetuity, for research and System development purposes.” In perpetuity means forever. Even after you stop using the device or cancel your subscription, Rapsodo keeps your data.
The privacy policy says Rapsodo may sell personal information. Not share. Not license. Sell.
And if you terminate your subscription, Rapsodo “shall have no further obligation to store, or make available to you, your Usage Data or Personal Data.” Your history, your progress, your data — gone.
This is the clearest example. Rapsodo tells you exactly what they do with your data. Most people just never read it.
SkyTrak: The Everything Clause
SkyTrak’s privacy policy is broader. They collect “Audio/Video Information” — specifically “images, audio recordings, and video that may be collected or uploaded in connection with your use of our Goods and Services.”
They also collect “Fitness and Biomechanical Information” — “details relating to your movement, biomechanics, fitness and exercise information where you choose to share them.”
The phrase “where you choose to share them” is doing some heavy lifting. Because the device automatically captures your swing video as part of normal operation. The question is whether declining to actively upload that video prevents it from being collected in the first place.
SkyTrak offers “unlimited cloud storage” of shot data with its membership tiers. Every shot you hit gets stored on their servers. Combine that with the camera-based tracking that SkyTrak OG, SkyTrak+, and ST MAX all use, and the picture is clear: your practice history is being saved, organized, and retained.
SkyTrak is now owned by GOLFTEC, which is a $1.2 billion company. That matters because it means the data doesn’t just sit in a SkyTrak database. It sits inside a larger corporate data infrastructure with its own policies, its own partners, and its own commercial interests. Garmin: The Perpetual License
Garmin’s approach is different in an interesting way. The hardware itself — the R10, R50, and G82 — doesn’t necessarily capture video in the same way camera-based units do (the R10 is radar). When you use the Garmin Golf membership features, you grant Garmin “a perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free, and nonexclusive license to reproduce, adapt, modify, translate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute any such User Content as required for the provision of Membership Features.”
That license includes “a right for Garmin to make such User Content available to other companies, organizations or individuals as required for the provision of Membership Features.”
This is standard legal language for a software service. Facebook, Google, and every other platform has similar clauses. The launch monitor in your garage generates content — swing data, practice sessions, performance metrics — that gets fed into Garmin’s “Trends in Golf” initiative, an anonymized data product that Garmin uses to publish industry statistics and market to equipment manufacturers.
Square Golf: The Newcomer
Square Golf’s privacy posture is less documented simply because the company is newer and the Omni only started shipping in July 2026. The original Square Golf launch monitor ($699) connects via Bluetooth to your device and uses marked balls for spin tracking. The Omni ($1,599) uses four cameras and measures club data directly.
Square Golf’s data collection is primarily through the app. Shot data gets stored. The question of video retention for the camera-based Omni is less clear publicly than for Rapsodo or SkyTrak. But the architecture is the same: a camera pointed at your hitting area, connected to software that communicates with a server. Where there’s a camera and an internet connection, there’s data leaving your house.
The Practical Risk Assessment
I don’t want to overstate the concern here. This is not a “your launch monitor is spying on you” article. The risk profile is different from installing a Chinese-made security camera in your bedroom. These are legitimate consumer electronics from established companies, and the data collection is primarily used for product improvement and aggregated analytics.
But there are real scenarios worth considering:
Your insurance company finds your swing data. Life insurance underwriting is increasingly data-driven. If a data broker buys anonymized swing data from a manufacturer and re-identifies it — and data brokers do this for a living — your insurance company could know you swing a golf club at 112 mph, which is correlated with certain health profiles. This is speculative. It is also how the data broker industry works.
Your divorce lawyer subpoenas your practice history. If your launch monitor captures video and stores it with timestamps, that footage could become evidence in a legal proceeding. The terms of service at Rapsodo and SkyTrak both contemplate data retention. The cloud storage feature you pay for is a record of every session.
A data breach exposes your garage. This is the most realistic risk. Every company that stores user data eventually gets breached. If your launch monitor’s manufacturer stores video footage from your home, a breach would expose footage of your private living space. A 2023 report found that 76% of consumer IoT products had security vulnerabilities. Launch monitors are IoT devices with cameras.
You move, sell the device, and forget about the data. Your old launch monitor is in someone else’s garage. Your data is still on the manufacturer’s servers. You can request deletion, but most users never do. The data persists in perpetuity, because that’s what the terms allow.
What You Can Actually Do
If you’re uncomfortable with the current state of launch monitor privacy, you have a few options:
Ask the company for their data policy. Most manufacturers will send you a copy of what they’ve collected. Under CCPA in California and similar laws elsewhere, you have the right to know what data a company holds about you and request its deletion. SkyTrak, Garmin, and Rapsodo all have data subject request processes.
Use offline mode when you can. Some launch monitors work without a network connection. If your device supports local-only operation, you can hit balls without uploading data. The trade-off is that you lose cloud storage, software updates, and online features. But you keep your video on your device.
Buy a radar unit instead. The Garmin R10 is radar-based. No camera pointed at your hitting area. FlightScope Mevo+ is radar-based. These units capture ball flight data, not video of your home. If privacy is your priority, radar is the simpler choice.
Treat your launch monitor like any other internet-connected camera. Don’t set it up in a private area of your home. Don’t point it at things you wouldn’t want uploaded to a server. So What Do You Do With This?

But every camera-based launch monitor in your price range captures video of your home and uploads it to a server owned by the manufacturer.
This is not a conspiracy. It’s the standard business model of connected devices in 2026. Your phone does it. Your TV does it. Your car does it. Your launch monitor does it.
The difference with a launch monitor is that you put it in your garage, pointed at a hitting area, in a room where you store things and walk around in clothes you wouldn’t wear in public. And unlike your phone, which lives in your pocket, the camera on your launch monitor is always oriented in one direction — toward the place where you hit balls and everything around it.
The question isn’t whether Rapsodo or SkyTrak or Garmin is doing something wrong with your data. The question is whether you want a camera pointed at your private space, connected to the internet, with your footage stored on someone else’s server, governed by terms you probably didn’t read.
For some people, the answer doesn’t matter. For others, it changes which launch monitor they buy. Either way, you should know what you’re agreeing to.
