How Launch Monitors Got Cheap: From $20K to $199
Five years ago, if you wanted a launch monitor that could tell you spin rate, club path, and face angle, you had two options:
Hand over $20,000 for a Foresight GCQuad.
Or hand over $20,000 for a TrackMan 4.
That was it. The entry cost for real launch data was a used Honda Civic. The consumer market didn’t exist because the technology was built for club fitters, tour pros, and R&D departments — people who could justify a car payment worth of gear to measure ball flight.
Today, you can buy a launch monitor that measures ball speed, club speed, smash factor, carry distance, and total distance for $199. The Shot Scope LM1 is a real product, shipping in volume, and independent testing shows it’s within 1-2 mph of a GCQuad on ball speed. It’s a Doppler radar unit that uses the same fundamental physics as a TrackMan.
The question is: how did this happen? And what does it mean for someone who’s trying to decide what to buy right now?
The Technology Hasn’t Changed. The Economics Did.
Every launch monitor on the market uses one of two approaches to measure your golf swing.
Doppler radar works by bouncing radio waves off the ball and club and measuring the frequency shift as they move. It’s the same physics as a police radar gun. The unit emits a signal, the signal bounces off a moving object, and the frequency change tells you how fast that object is moving. TrackMan, Garmin R10, [FlightScope Mevo+, and the Shot Scope LM1 all use some form of this.
Photometric imaging works by taking high-speed photographs of the ball and club at impact. A camera running at thousands of frames per second captures the moment of contact, and software analyzes the images to calculate speed, spin, launch angle, and club delivery. Foresight GCQuad, GC3, Bushnell Launch Pro, Square Golf, and Uneekor all use this approach.
Neither technology is new. Doppler radar has been used to track objects since World War II. High-speed cameras have been photographing golf swings since the 1990s. The innovation isn’t in the physics — it’s in the manufacturing cost.
The GCQuad uses four cameras running at up to 10,000 frames per second. Ten years ago, those sensors cost Foresight about $800 per unit in small-volume production. Today, a comparable sensor costs $40. The same miniaturization that put a 4K camera in your phone put a high-speed camera in a launch monitor that costs $1,599 — like the Square Golf Omni.
Radar chips followed the same curve. The K-band Doppler module in a Shot Scope LM1 is a mass-produced component that costs roughly $12. The same module in 2018 cost $80. The difference is volume — the LM1 uses a chip that’s also found in automotive radar systems, industrial sensors, and smart home devices. The economies of scale from those industries pulled the cost down.
The Price Tiers Make Sense Now
The market has sorted itself into three tiers based on what technology you’re buying, not how much margin the manufacturer is adding.
Under $500: Pure radar, no simulator. The Shot Scope LM1 ($199), PRGR ($229), and original Rapsodo MLM ($249) all use single-array Doppler radar. They measure ball speed, club speed, carry distance, and smash factor. They do not measure spin, launch angle, or club path. They cannot connect to GSPro or any simulator software. They’re range tools, not sim tools. The Garmin R10 ($499) sits at the top of this tier — it adds spin estimation and simulator compatibility, but it’s still estimating spin from flight data rather than measuring it directly.
$500 to $1,500: Radar with camera assist, or entry-level photometric. The Rapsodo MLM2Pro ($699) pairs radar with a camera that measures spin directly when you use marked balls. The Square Golf Home Edition ($699) is the first photometric unit under $1,000 — it uses a camera at impact, so spin is measured directly. The Square Golf Omni ($1,599) uses four cameras and measures everything a GC3 measures, at one-third the price. The SkyTrak+ ($1,995) uses a hybrid approach with both camera and radar.
$2,000 and up: Full photometric or premium hybrid. The Bushnell Launch Pro ($2,499), Foresight GC3 ($5,999), Uneekor Eye Mini ($3,999), and GCQuad ($15,000) all use high-speed cameras. They directly measure every data point. They don’t estimate anything. The TrackMan 4 ($25,000) and TrackMan iO ($14,000) use premium radar with camera augmentation. At this tier, you’re paying for validation — the data is trusted by club fitters, tour pros, and manufacturers.
The range between $500 and $2,000 didn’t exist in 2020. The gap was between a $499 Garmin R10 (which was new then and astonishing at that price) and a $2,500 Bushnell Launch Pro. Now there are six products in that gap, and the best of them — the Square Golf Omni — uses the same four-camera photometric approach as a $15,000 GCQuad.
What $199 Gets You Today
The Shot Scope LM1 is the best example of how far the market has come. It’s a $199 device that measures ball speed, club speed, smash factor, carry distance, and total distance. Independent testing against a GCQuad showed ball speed within 1 mph, carry distance within 8-10 yards on irons, and zero misreads over hundreds of shots.
It does not measure spin. It does not measure launch angle. It does not connect to any simulator software. You cannot play GSPro with it. You cannot see a shot tracer. You get five numbers on a 3.5-inch color screen, and that’s it.
Five numbers are enough for most of what you actually need from practice. Knowing your carry distance gap between a 7-iron and 8-iron doesn’t require spin data. Knowing whether your driver swing speed is improving doesn’t require launch angle. The LM1 covers the 80% use case for 5% of the price of a pro unit.
The people who say the LM1 is useless because it doesn’t measure spin are the same people who tell beginners they need fitted irons. Technically correct, but missing the point. The LM1 is for the golfer who’s never owned a launch monitor and doesn’t know what spin rate means. It’s for the guy who wants to know how far he actually hits his 7-iron instead of guessing. At $199 with no subscription, it’s the cheapest lesson in how bad your distance gapping actually is.
What $1,599 Gets You Today
The Square Golf Omni is the other end of the democratization story. It’s a four-camera photometric unit that measures every data point a GCQuad measures — spin rate, spin axis, face angle, club path, dynamic loft, attack angle, ball speed, club speed, launch angle, and impact location. It works indoors. It requires no subscription. It connects to GSPro.
It costs $1,599. The GCQuad costs $15,000.
The cameras inside the Omni are not as good as the cameras inside the GCQuad. The Omni runs at a lower frame rate, uses smaller sensors, and has a narrower hitting zone. But the data it produces is within the same ballpark. Independent testing against a GCHawk showed ball speed matching within 1-2 mph on full shots. Spin rates were within 200 RPM. For a home simulator, that’s all you need.
The Omni exists because the cost of a 720p high-speed camera sensor dropped from $200 to $15 in five years. The microcontroller that processes the image data went from $50 to $8. The Bluetooth module went from $12 to $3. The enclosure went from machined aluminum to injection-molded plastic. Every component got cheaper, and the savings went to the buyer.
What This Means for the Market
The price compression at the bottom is pulling the entire market down. When the LM1 exists at $199, the Garmin R10 has to justify its $499 price tag with better features — and it does, with simulator compatibility and spin estimation. When the Omni exists at $1,599, the Bushnell Launch Pro has to justify its $2,499 price tag with a proven track record and a better software ecosystem. When the GC3 sits at $5,999, it has to be significantly better than the Omni to justify the premium.
The result is better products at every price point. The R10 added a putting mode and improved spin estimation after the MLM2Pro launched. The MLM2Pro added club path and angle of attack via firmware update after Square Golf entered the market. The pressure is flowing downhill, and everyone benefits.
The trend is also accelerating. The components inside these devices are getting cheaper every year, not every product cycle. The 2027 version of the Shot Scope LM1 will probably measure spin. The 2027 version of the Square Golf Omni will probably have a larger hitting zone. The 2027 version of Foresight’s entry-level product — if they release one — will probably be under $3,000.
The One Thing Nobody Tells You
The most important thing to understand about launch monitor pricing is that the accuracy gap between a $199 device and a $15,000 device is smaller than the gap between a $199 device and guessing. The LM1 is within 1-2 mph of a GCQuad on ball speed. A golfer guessing their club speed from feel is often 10-15 mph off. The accuracy delta between the LM1 and the GCQuad is noise. The accuracy delta between the LM1 and no data at all is enormous.
This is the real democratization story. The baseline for what counts as “good enough” has shifted so far down that almost anyone can afford useful data. The LM1 at $199 is good enough for distance gapping and speed training. The Omni at $1,599 is good enough for club fitting and swing analysis. The GC3 at $5,999 is good enough for a tour pro.
The entry cost for data-driven practice has dropped from a car payment to a dinner out. The technology is the same. The physics haven’t changed. The sensors just got cheap enough to put in a box that anyone can afford.
