The Great Display Divide: Why Some Launch Monitors Have Screens and Others Don’t
Walk into a golf store in 2026 and look at the launch monitor shelf. You’ll see something weird.

This isn’t random. The launch monitor market is splitting into two camps — standalone units with built-in displays, and phone-dependent units that need your smartphone to show you anything meaningful. The split is happening at every price point, and it reflects a fundamental disagreement about what a launch monitor should be.
I have thoughts about this.
The Two Philosophies
Camp Display: The launch monitor is an appliance. You turn it on, hit balls, and look at the screen on the device. The phone is optional — for data export, session history, maybe deeper analysis — but the core experience works without it. The device is self-contained.
Camp Phone: The launch monitor is a sensor. The device itself is a black box that measures ball flight and beams numbers to your phone. The phone is not optional. It is the user interface. Without it, the device shows you nothing — or at best, a blinking light that tells you it’s working.
Both philosophies produce accurate data. Both get you ball speed, carry distance, and swing feedback. But they create completely different user experiences.
The Friction Argument
The case for standalone displays is simple: it removes friction.
At a driving range, your phone is in your bag. Or it’s at 15% battery. Or you forgot it at home. Or you just don’t want to pull it out between every shot, unlock it, open an app, wait for Bluetooth to sync, and stare at a small screen while sweat drips on the glass. With a standalone unit, you hit the ball, glance at the device, and hit the next ball. The gap between swing and feedback is measured in seconds, not in app-loading time.
The Shot Scope LM1 at $199 is the purest expression of this philosophy. It has a 3.5-inch color screen, five metrics, and no phone requirement whatsoever. It stores up to 1,000 shots on the device. The Blue Tees Rainmaker at $599 takes it further. A 4.3-inch color display shows 13 metrics on-device. The magnetic remote lets you change clubs without walking back to the unit. The phone app exists for deeper analysis, but you never have to touch it. In practice, this means you can spend an entire range session without ever pulling out your phone. That’s a genuinely different experience from the R10, which shows you nothing until you pair it with the Garmin Golf app.
The Voice Caddie SC4 Pro at $499 is the dark horse here. It’s the only sub-$500 unit with a built-in LED display and voice feedback — it actually tells you your numbers out loud so you don’t even need to look down. The display is basic (LED, not color), but the point stands: you get feedback without any device interaction.
The Data Depth Argument
The case against built-in displays is also simple: a small screen can only show so much.
The Rapsodo MLM2Pro doesn’t have a screen because Rapsodo decided the phone is where the real experience lives. The MLM2Pro records swing video, overlays data on the video, tracks shot history with dispersion patterns, and integrates with E6 Connect for course play. A 3.5-inch display can’t do any of that. The phone IS the interface that makes the product work.
The Garmin R10 takes the same approach, though for different reasons. Garmin’s strength is the Garmin Golf app ecosystem — 43,000 courses, Home Tee Hero sim play, session tracking, handicap tracking, leaderboards. But Square’s philosophy is different: the Home Edition operates through the Square Golf app, which handles course play, data visualization, and settings. The device itself is a camera that sits next to the ball and captures impact data. A screen on the device would be redundant because the app is where all the useful interface lives.
The Real Trade-Off
The display divide comes down to one fundamental question: where does your feedback loop live?
Phone-dependent units create a rich data ecosystem. Your session history, your improvement trends, your dispersion patterns, your swing video — all of it lives in the app and follows you across sessions. The trade-off is that every practice session starts with a pairing ritual, and every shot means looking at your phone instead of the ball.
Standalone units create an immediate feedback loop. Hit ball, see number, adjust, hit again. The trade-off is that your data lives on the device and has to be synced later, or it just doesn’t exist in long-term form. The LM1 stores 1,000 shots. The Rainmaker stores session data. But neither gives you the trend analysis and stroke tracking that the Garmin Golf app or Rapsodo app provides.
This trade-off matters more than you’d think because it shapes how you practice. A phone-dependent unit turns range practice into a data session. You’re collecting data points, reviewing numbers, building a database. That’s valuable for serious practice. But it also adds cognitive overhead that can make practice feel like work.
A standalone unit turns range practice into hitting balls. You look at the number, absorb it, and hit the next one. No data management required. That’s closer to how good practice actually works — rapid feedback, immediate adjustment, no overhead.
The Trend Is Clear
Look at which products have launched in the last 18 months:

- Garmin G82 ($599): GPS + launch monitor with integrated display

And look at which products have NOT added screens:

The new products are adding displays. The established products are staying phone-dependent. The market is voting with its feet, and the trend favors standalone operation.
The R10 is the interesting case. It’s the best-selling launch monitor in the world, and it doesn’t have a screen. Garmin could add one — they clearly know how, given the G82 and R50. But they haven’t. My theory: the R10’s price point ($499) is the constraint. Adding a screen would push it to $599, where it directly competes with the Rainmaker and the G82. Garmin chose to keep the R10 cheap and let the more expensive models have the displays. That’s a rational decision, but it means the R10’s user experience is starting to feel dated compared to the newer options.
Who Wins?
For range practice, standalone units win. The LM1 at $199 is the best range tool on the market because it eliminates everything between you and the feedback. You hit, you see, you adjust. No phone, no app, no friction.
For simulator play, it depends. If you’re using GSPro, you’re looking at a computer screen anyway, so the launch monitor’s display doesn’t matter. The MLM2Pro, R10, and Square HE all work fine with GSPro despite having no built-in screen, because the simulator software IS the display.
For hybrid use (range + sim), the Rainmaker and SC4 Pro are the sweet spot. They have displays for range work and GSPro/E6 compatibility for sim use. You get the best of both worlds without paying for two devices.
For data nerds who want every session tracked and analyzed, phone-dependent units still win. The R10 + Garmin Golf app is a genuinely powerful practice system. The MLM2Pro + Rapsodo app with swing video is unmatched at its price. These apps have years of development behind them. The standalone units’ apps are catching up, but they’re not there yet.
The Bigger Picture
The display divide is a side effect of a market that’s growing too fast for anyone to have a consistent philosophy. Three years ago, the sub-$1,000 launch monitor market was one product (the R10). Now it’s seven products from seven companies, each with a different idea about what a launch monitor should be.

They can’t all be right. But they can all be right for different users.
The standalone camp is winning the new customer battle. The LM1, Rainmaker, and SC4 Pro are the hot products of 2026. The R10 is still the volume leader, but it’s being propped up by five years of brand equity and a price that keeps dropping. The phone-dependent model is mature tech. The standalone model is the innovation — and innovation attracts buyers.
If I were buying today, here’s how I’d think about it:
Buy a standalone unit ($199-$599) if you mostly practice at the range and want the fastest possible feedback loop. The LM1 at $199 is the best $199 you’ll spend on golf this year. The SC4 Pro at $499 adds voice feedback and basic sim. The Rainmaker at $599 adds GSPro and a proper color display.
Buy a phone-dependent unit ($499-$699) if you want the richest possible data ecosystem and don’t mind the phone as your interface. The R10 at $499 is the value king. The MLM2Pro at $699 adds swing video and real spin measurement — the phone dependency is worth it for the features.
Buy a premium standalone if budget isn’t the constraint. The Square Omni at $1,599 gives you camera accuracy with a built-in display. The Garmin R50 at $4,500 gives you a full sim experience in a box with a 10-inch touchscreen. These are different products, but they prove that the standalone philosophy scales up.
The display divide isn’t going to resolve. It’s going to widen. More standalone units will launch with better screens. More phone-dependent units will double down on app ecosystems. The market will bifurcate further, and the right answer will depend on how you practice — not on which launch monitor has the best specs.
That’s not a bad outcome. It means you can choose the experience that fits your habits rather than the one that has the most features. And in a market that’s growing this fast, having a real choice is the win.
