Your Launch Monitor Is Guessing Your Spin: The Truth About Sim Balls

The short answer

Radar launch monitors need Titleist RCT balls for accurate spin indoors. Camera systems need clean premium balls. And the Rapsodo MLM2Pro needs special.

Your Launch Monitor Is Probably Guessing Your Spin.

Quick Context: The golf ball you use in your simulator matters more than most buyers realize. Radar-based launch monitors (Garmin R10, FlightScope Mevo+, Full Swing KIT) need Titleist RCT balls for accurate indoor spin data. Camera-based systems (SkyTrak+, GC3, Uneekor) work with any clean premium ball. The Rapsodo MLM2PRO requires special RPT marked balls for spin axis. Using the wrong ball means your data is estimated, not measured.

Your brand new Garmin R10 arrives. You set it up in the garage. You grab a sleeve of random Pro V1s you found in your bag. You hit a few shots. The numbers look fine. Ball speed: 145. Carry: 270. Spin: 2,800. Looks good.

Except the spin number is made up.

That’s not dramatic license. The R10 (and every other radar-based launch monitor) estimates spin indoors unless you use a specific ball. The radar can’t see the ball long enough in a garage to capture true spin. It has to guess. And the guess is based on an algorithm that assumes you’re hitting a normal ball with normal launch conditions.

The result is that your spin numbers are anywhere from “close enough” to “completely wrong” depending on the shot.

The fix is a $55 golf ball.

The Three-Ball Problem

The home golf simulator market has managed to create three separate ball standards that mostly don’t talk to each other. This is the kind of fragmentation you’d expect from an industry that grew too fast and didn’t bother to coordinate.

RCT (Radar Capture Technology) — Titleist embeds a radar-reflective layer inside the ball’s casing. This gives the radar a stronger signal to read in the short indoor flight window. Compatible with: Garmin R10, FlightScope Mevo+ and Mevo Gen 2, Full Swing KIT, TrackMan 4. Cost: about $55/dozen.

RPT (Rapsodo Precision Technology) — A printed dot pattern on the outside of the ball. The MLM2PRO’s Impact Vision camera photographs the ball at 240 fps and tracks the dot pattern to measure spin rate and spin axis. Without these balls, the MLM2PRO can’t measure spin axis at all. Compatible with: Rapsodo MLM2PRO. Cost: about $70/dozen for Titleist Pro V1, $58/dozen for Callaway Chrome Tour.

Standard premium balls — No special technology. Any clean, unscuffed premium ball works because camera-based launch monitors capture data at impact, not during flight. Compatible with: SkyTrak+, Foresight GC3/GCQuad/QuadMAX, Bushnell Launch Pro, Uneekor Eye Mini/XO/XR, Garmin R50, Square Golf, TruGolf Apogee, pretty much anything with a camera. Cost: $45-55/dozen for your normal Pro V1 or TP5.

So three standards exist, two of them cost extra, one is optional, and the industry does a terrible job of explaining which is which.

The Hidden Annual Cost

Here’s the math nobody runs before buying a launch monitor.

If you buy a Garmin R10 ($599), you should budget $55 every few months for RCT balls. If you hit 5,000 balls a month (which is a lot but not unreasonable for a sim nerd), you’re going through a dozen balls every 2-3 weeks. That’s about $900-1,100 a year in balls.

If you buy an MLM2PRO ($699), you need RPT balls at $70/dozen. Same usage pattern: about $1,100-1,400 a year.

If you buy a SkyTrak+ ($2,695), you use standard Pro V1s at $50/dozen. About $800-1,000 a year.

The launch monitor price difference ($2,096 between the R10 and the SkyTrak+) evaporates in about 2 years of ball costs. The R10 buyer spends $1,000/year on RCT balls. The SkyTrak+ buyer spends $800/year on normal balls. Over 2 years, the R10 buyer has spent $599 + $2,000 = $2,599. The SkyTrak+ buyer has spent $2,695 + $1,600 = $4,295.

Wait — I just did that math and the SkyTrak+ still costs more. But the gap narrows a lot. And the SkyTrak+ buyer gets better indoor accuracy on every shot, not just the ones where the ball is new and clean.

The ball costs are a real factor in the total cost of ownership, and nobody talks about them.

What Actually Happens When You Use the Wrong Ball

The severity depends on your launch monitor.

Radar units (R10, Mevo+, KIT) : Without RCT balls, your spin numbers are estimated. How wrong? Depends on the algorithm. Some units are within 10% most of the time. Others can be off by 30%+ on specific shots. The real problem is inconsistency — the unit might be close on one shot and completely wrong on the next. You can’t trust the data for club fitting or swing changes.

Rapsodo MLM2PRO: Without RPT balls, you get no spin axis. The unit estimates spin rate from its radar component, but it can’t tell you whether the ball is curving left or right. For a device that markets itself as a serious training tool, that’s a pretty big gap. You’re basically using it as a $699 speed radar.

Camera units (GC3, SkyTrak+, Uneekor, etc.) : You’re fine. Any clean ball works. The camera captures data at impact, not during flight, so it doesn’t need the ball to fly far or reflect a specific signal. The only caveat is ball condition — scuffed or dirty balls can throw off the camera’s ability to read spin marks.

The Industry Angle That Nobody’s Talking About

The fragmentation of ball standards is a symptom of a bigger problem: the home golf simulator market grew up fast and nobody agreed on anything.

Titleist partnered with TrackMan to create RCT because TrackMan is the dominant fitting tool and Titleist wanted to improve indoor fitting accuracy. That’s a B2B play that happens to benefit home users.

Rapsodo created RPT because they needed a way to measure spin on a $700 device. Embedding a radar chip (like RCT) costs money. Printing dots on a ball costs basically nothing. So they went the camera route.

Camera manufacturers (Foresight, Uneekor, SkyTrak) don’t need either because their technology inherently captures spin at impact. They’re the lucky ones who chose the right technology for indoor use from the start.

The result is that consumers have to figure out a three-way compatibility matrix that the industry refuses to explain. Go to the Garmin R10 product page. It doesn’t tell you to buy RCT balls. Go to the MLM2PRO page. It mentions RPT balls in the fine print. Go to the SkyTrak+ page. It says “any golf ball” — which is actually true but sounds like marketing spin.

This is an industry that needs to grow up. When you buy a launch monitor, the box should tell you what ball to use. The product page should have a line item. The setup guide should include it. Instead, you find out 6 months later when you’re comparing your numbers to a friend’s GC3 and wondering why your spin is all over the place.

The Practical Guide

Here’s what to buy, organized by launch monitor, no bullshit.

Garmin R10: Buy Titleist Pro V1 RCT or Pro V1x RCT. They’re $55/dozen. Don’t bother with reflective stickers — they peel off, you have to apply them perfectly, and they degrade after a few shots. RCT balls work for 100+ shots before the wear becomes noticeable. Just buy the damn balls.

FlightScope Mevo+ or Mevo Gen 2: Same as above — RCT balls or official FlightScope metallic stickers. The stickers work if you’re disciplined about applying them. Most people aren’t. RCT balls are the easier path.

Full Swing KIT: RCT balls. Full Swing is a hybrid camera+radar system, but the indoor spin capture benefits from RCT just like any other radar unit.

Rapsodo MLM2PRO: RPT balls. They’re $70/dozen for the Titleist Pro V1 version. If you’re already a Pro V1 player, this is just the same ball with dots on it. The Callaway Chrome Tour RPT version is $58. Buy whichever you normally play.

TrackMan 4: RCT balls. But if you have a TrackMan 4 in your home, you’re not reading this article for budget advice.

SkyTrak+, GC3, GCQuad, QuadMAX, Bushnell Launch Pro, Garmin R50, Uneekor Eye Mini/XO/XR, Square Golf, TruGolf Apogee, GOLFZON Wave: Standard premium balls. Pro V1, TP5, Chrome Tour, Z-Star, whatever you play on the course. Keep them clean. Replace them when they’re scuffed. That’s it.

The one exception: If you’re using a Foresight or Bushnell camera-based unit and you want the absolute best possible spin axis accuracy, you can buy marked balls (RPT-style). Foresight recommends them but doesn’t require them. The improvement is marginal. Spend the money on a hitting mat instead.

The Real Take

The simulator ball industry is a mess of competing standards, hidden costs, and bad communication. But the actual problem is simple: know what your launch monitor needs, buy the right ball, and stop worrying about it.

If you have a radar unit, budget an extra $55 per dozen for RCT balls. If you have an MLM2PRO, budget $70 for RPT. If you have a camera unit, buy whatever you play on the course.

The data quality difference between the right ball and the wrong ball is bigger than the difference between a $700 launch monitor and a $3,000 one. That’s not hyperbole. That’s how the technology works. The right ball means measured data. The wrong ball means estimated data. Everything else is noise.

Now go buy the right balls and stop wondering why your numbers don’t match your friend’s.
